Don't listen to STARLEZZ he's obviously just trying to downplay the sales. No big deal considering it wasn't heavily discounted for long everywhere. I checked around my areas and it was full price when it was apparently discounted.
So I guess when a game gets greatest hits status the sales no longer matter, right? ;)

Because people bring up Zelda, I think it's important to remember that both games are selling amazingly and it's really a sign of strength that Horizon is able to even compete with a long established franchise like Zelda. Both games have things against them, Horizon is a new IP and Zelda is on a smaller installbase. Zelda sold 3.92 million units on Switch as of June 30th, and combined with the Wii U version it's sold 5 million by June 30th.

Either way, both games are incredibly close. We should be happy for both.

AngryLittleAlchemist posted 04/08/2017, 05:51
As of April 30th this is overtracked physically by 277,188 copies. If we assume it isn't overtracked much past that, then we can deduct 277,188 off the 3,058,953 number given by VGChartz as of June 10th. It's fair to assume the digital attach rate of Horizon Zero Dawn has been consistent, as last reported the attach rate was 27% from it's launch to April 30th. If we use that attach rate this would mean that Horizon Zero Dawn sold somewhere around 3,810,636 copies by June 10th. Now obviously that might need to be changed, because we don't know how much the game is overtracked physically from after the date of April 30th, but it doesn't really matter, because the number will still be around the 3.6+ area. Which means, this game is a RESOUNDING SUCCESS! This makes me happy beyond belief, seeing a big IP like this, a NEW IP like this, get such great sales!

For the past few weeks, Horizon's sales per week have been consistently around 20-50k. The game's sales have been bolstered significantly because of the "summer of play" event by Sony. If we assume the per week average of the past few weeks stays largely the same after June 10th(I adjusted the average down slightly assuming the games weekly sales would go back down to 20,000-35,000 weekly) than the game would sell about 200,000 - 250,000 physical copies from June 11th to August 3rd, since a number of about 30,000(give or take) times 7.5 would equal 225,000. Including the 27% attach rate, this means that if it sold 225,000 physical copies from June 11th to August 3rd , in that time it would have sold 308,219 copies when including digital.

So if we assume that VGChartz physical sales have more or less been accurate after April 30th, the game would have sales of 4,118,855 copies including digital. Obviously you might have to add more copies or take away some, I don't work at Sony so I can't be sure. But those numbers are extremely impressive and I'm fairly certain that no matter what it's sold around that many units!

@AName81 What I meant is it's above Zelda on the charts currently. Basically, Horizon is now selling very consistently, on a weekly basis. It isn't really slowing down. It should slowly but surely get to around 6 million no problem.

From what I've read that actually seems to be by April 30th. It was just reported on June 1st. So around ~250k overtracked in physical copies (within the 10% margin of error well done vgchartz.). Almost a million sold in digital. Phenomenal stuff.
Message | Report
Juma009 posted 09/06/2017, 06:08
This is overtracked, Sony confirmed that by June 1st HZD had sold 3.4 million copies, that's including 925k in digital which would mean it has sold 2.5 million on retail by June, VGchartz has it at 2.7 by May.

Qwark posted 01/06/2017, 11:23
@Machina That's doubtful if we would include digital the US might have hit the 1 million mark barely with these numbers. Europe would probably have hit 1.50 million at least when you include digital. So there is still a pretty big gap between the two. Besides the game seems to still be selling quite good in Europe and doesn't have legs in the US.
Message | Report
Qwark posted 26/05/2017, 09:46
This game is under tracked or did really well digitally. Anyway this game is targeted at the EU and not NA. There are plenty of PS games that sell way better in the US than Europe. The best example is God of War. Americans like their action games gory and patriotic and this game is neither. The protagonist isn't the reason this game isn't selling well in US. It's a combination of this game having a setting which is targeted at Europeans and the game having more competition in the US. Besides as long as this game sells in Europe it's bound to hit the 5 million mark with ease.
Message | Report
curl-6 posted 25/05/2017, 03:19
I still don't think the gap between EU and NA can be explained away as "cos female protagonist". Seems far more likely to me that it's primarily a matter of the strength of the competition in each region.

Shiken posted 24/05/2017, 11:40
Curl6

Ah well then I agree with you. For some reason I always pair PS and XBox against eachother when only the word competition is used. I guess I am still getting used to Nintendo hype potentially putting them back into a competitive stance lol.

And thank you for the clarification jlenoconel. I pass on Horizon and the Last of Us 2 because I don't like playing as a female, but I am by no means sexist. It just simply affects my sense of immersion.

Had you actually meant that we are all sexist then that would be, as curl6 stated, absolutely ridiculous. I will say that my type of preference can play a factor though, because everyone I know in RL has no intention of playing as a female. I say the competition from BotW may be the bigger factor, but the protagonist did play a bigger role than most people would prefer to believe.
Message | Report
jlenoconel posted 24/05/2017, 07:23
I didn't say anyone was sexist. I just pointed out that American gamers prefer a male protagonist.
Message | Report
curl-6 posted 24/05/2017, 03:53
That's my point; PS/Horizon has stronger competition in NA, (most notably from Botw) which means Horizon gets a smaller piece of the pie there. Same reason Botw/Switch sold less in Europe than in the US, cos it faces stronger competition from PS there.
jlenoconel's claim that NA sales are half of Europe's because "Americans are sexist" is ridiculous.
Message | Report
Shiken posted 23/05/2017, 02:16
Curl6

The thing is though, roughly the same amount of people own PS4s. X1 had nothing coming out so anyone that wanted Horizon would have just gotten it.

However it is possible that Breath of the Wild releasing so close had a lot to do with it. It was the only competition the game had and the sales numbers are basically flipped for EU and the NA.

So in terms of competition, the launch of the Switch and BotW impacted the sales of Horizon in NA much more than EU. That does not even account for those who chose to get BotW on the WiiU.

If BotW is not the reason, then it boils down to people just not wanting it as much in the US. Brand power would have nothing to do with it as the competition had nothing else going on other than BotW.
Message | Report
curl-6 posted 21/05/2017, 01:23
It's not just a matter of total sales, but also market share and competition. In Europe PS has basically no real competition, while in NA it does.
Message | Report
Shiken posted 21/05/2017, 12:42
It is 20.3 mil vs 22.6 mil. Those numbers are too close to affect Horizon sales as you suggest.

Again, your point is invalid.
Message | Report
curl-6 posted 21/05/2017, 12:27
My point is not invalid; PS4 has an overwhelming lead in Europe, but in NA it has only a slight lead. It's also sold less in NA total than in EU. So as a brand it is weaker in the US than in EU.
Message | Report
Shiken posted 21/05/2017, 12:06
I am glad it is doing well though. From what I can tell, it is a solid game. Just not for me.
Message | Report
Shiken posted 21/05/2017, 12:03
I did not get it because it has a female protagonist curl9. I find nothing wrong with it, I just cannot immerse myself into a game as a female. You would be suprised how many people share my mindset on this.

Also Playstation is also the biggest brand for console gaming in the US as well this gen. This is not last gen, PS is outselling XBox by quite a large margin here. With that in mind, your point on brand strength is invalid.
Message | Report
curl-6 posted 20/05/2017, 04:14
I doubt its because it has a female protag, Playstation is just not as a strong a brand in the US as in Europe
