Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE (WiiU) > Opinions (36)

NoirSon posted 02/07/2017, 05:12
Probably said it before but they burnt bridges with that first trailer. Showcasing previous heroes from all the Fire Emblem and mainline SMT games only to say, nope nothing related to the past SMT games besides naming of spells and game play elements. Next the reveal it would be a idol/Japan pop industry game, next they said only characters from 1st/3rd game with Marth's crew and the second most recent with Chrom and company would show up in this one. In the end we got a very good game but for the average SMT or FE fan that was hyped for that initial trailer that seemed like we would be revisiting the rich history of all the past games, you kind of got screwed for a Persona lite with FE redesigns as stand in for the usual SMT style Persona avatars. The Japanese fan base clearly was not feeling that initially but overall still one of the better JRPGs of the generation on a home console.

Far from terrible numbers when you actually see how SMT games usually sell, for a limited release of a SMT spin off on the final year of WiiU 300k is decent.

Far from a bad game, but flat out terrible numbers, especially when you consider how big of a deal people were making back when this game was initially teased as SMT X FE 3 years ago.

Thats insteresting b/c the june 24th pre orders in the US were around 80-95 dollars. Then right after it was released, it shot up to 120-130 dollars. then it has bottomed out since.. I paid 118.00 and 132.00 for my limited edition sets the first week of July. The limited set is around 55.00 now and disc/case only is 45 or less US dollars.

And yet, you know what's funny? When you consider this had the worst marketing campaign ever for an exclusive from a big developer .... when you consider that this literally has the worst name in the history of video games ... when you consider that it's a confusing game on a platform with only 13 million users ... this sold pretty ok physically. No, seriously, most popular third party jrpgs that are multiplatform have problems cracking a quarter of a million. Yet this sold that physically. IF ANYTHING, this proves that Nintendo gamers are willing to buy Niche games and, that nintendo NEEDS to get BETTER NAMING CONVENTIONS AND BETTER ADVERTISING. I mean this is LITERALLY A SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI X FIRE EMBLEM CROSSOVER IN THE STYLE OF PERSONA. THAT IS SUCH A COOL OMAGE, and i'm not even into rpgs.

I'm pissed it did this bad- and there are only TWO rpg's on the Wii U. If you count hybrids like color splash or others maybe more. But this was a group collab between two of the most important RPG Companies in the world. Nothing else on the Wii U will come from Atlus or Intelligent Systems. In many ways, Nintendo never supported games, software or indie development for the Wii U which is why its library is so terrible. Here we are with Nintendo actively and adamantly supporting software support for the Switch now... and even before the Jan 12th debut... we've already got almost a dozen awesome titles confirmed here.

Lol dude Bayonetta 2 and Xenoblade X were definitely NOT flops. I don't know if you've been noticing this man, but most JRPGS on the Playstation 4 barely get past 250k-500k sales. And sure, big franchises like Dark Souls or Final Fantasy do. But most of the games that sold more than a mil during the 6th gen that were considered HUGE games even here in the west, don't sell much anymore. JRPGS are just a hard market to market to the west anymore now that you have mega corporations making Fallout and Skyrim. 800,000 for Xenoblade in it's first year is actually really good especially for a system like the Wii U. For reference, if the Wii U had the install base of the Xbox one, and we used the guestimation work the game could have sold 1.4 mil in it's first year. That's higher than Rise of the Tomb Raider on Xb1. I think they could have done it too...knowing Nintendo's audience is more open to JRPGs than xbox's. Bayonetta is a bit more debatable...but if you wanna believe what you want to believe.

One of the biggest flops on the Wii U along with Xenoblade X, Wii U Fit, The Wonderful 101, Bayonetta 2, Star Fox Zero and Fatal Frame black water maiden. I'm sure there are more games that fell well short of sales targets, but the lesson is Nintendo needs to make smarter choices when it comes to funding exclusives and make games that satisfies the customer not the ego of the developer.

Can somebody please change the name of this to Tokyo Mirage Sessions? Looks like the game has at least reached 250k, despite flopping is not so far from what the average Atlus game sells anyways, so I don't think those are horrible sales all things considered, the shipments were very low outside japan, it was hard to find after release and still managed to sell better in the west despite its extremely niche japanese nature.
@Goldmario79: This game had actually very positive reviews, some even called it the best JRPG of the gen, not everyone loves it for obvious reasons but the general consensus was very positive.

This game has gotten such a bad rap its not even funny. The reviewers all call it average lame Tactical RPG for Atlus again. The product reviews from Amazon and Ebay all give it 4.5 out of 5 by customers though. Plus there is no support for it.. no peripheral items for sale to promote it... no strategy guides.. it sucks! I bought 2 of the Limited Editions and they can suck it when it ends up being worth hundreds.

It's sad the early marketing for this game was so mishandled. After a good reveal trailer, it really didn't do a good job explaining and selling people on it. Which is a shame because it is apparently quite good.

I'm do glad I bought it, it's fantastic, and it's gonna be a niche game, very hard to find in the future, unfortunately. I wish it would have sold a bit more.

Another game in VGChartz where the name isn't updated or it is split somehow where the Japanese name or prototype name is listed instead of the actual name.

Thats why I said its SMT with a Fire Emblem skin, the main focus is Fire Emblem with SMT gameplay mechanics. I mean if you actually played the game you'd see it for yourself :| the game plays exactly like a SMT game. Oh well people are going to hate the game regardless because they set themselves up for something they were never truly promised.

If you play the game you find out it's exactly as advertised a SMT game with Fire Emblem skin.

Paatar posted 19/01/2016, 09:38
It wasn't false advertising. Shut the fuck up already. It was literally just art of characters from both franchises and that the time they showed it they hadn't fully decided where it was going. Sure they should have waited for that to happen, but it was not false advertising. So seriously. Zip it.
