But isn't this consists of sales of digital and boxes together?

So this should pass 5m retail this year. Pretty good considering many will be buying it on psn during the sales.

Yeah, so surprising that the newest addition to a cult classic franchise with huge expectations will sell more than the third addition in a saga that touched a more mainstream audience with it's third iteration. Oh my.

FFXV just blew this game's sales away in the US - twice as much week 1. Just goes to show ya reviews and awards don't matter. The players know what games they like.

I'm not happy with the Witcher 3, or rather with the universal praise it gets.

It's a good game in its own right but doesn't deserve to be praised as the best game of all time or described as being a breakthrough in RPG design.

First, I think it's politically correct and unrealistic that people in this game have modern values and morals and a high understanding of human rights while living in a medieval fantasy world. Why can't they reserve that for games with modern settings? Why can't we be tolerant and accept an entertainment experience with another set of values?

Second, there are serious problems with The Witchers 3's design. It's not open world, it's still hub based, and the world feels very unauthentic with its generic enemy nests conveniently sprinkled every fifteen meters. Also the RPG mechanics and character development are false. There is almost no customization, it's all smoke and mirrors. The game plays out the same no matter what you choose. Xp is only gained through quests to ensure the player is properly leveled wherever he goes. The developer put hundreds of restrictions in skills, items and upgrades to ensure perfect balance so that no player can choose "wrong". This is Red Dead Redemption in a medieval world, not an RPG.

There have been multiple sites claiming that this game topped 6 million units, across all platforms in just its first 6 weeks......
Yeah, I think it's safe to say this game is undertracked, to say the least.

@tokil
Again, The Witcher 3 is a popular game in regions X1 is significantly less popular. That caused a surprisingly big sales disparity for this game.

Obviously games are going to sell better on PS4 given the userbase. But when its this big its due to the regions where the game is popular. Spoiler alert, Japanese game will do significantly better on PS4 as well.

tokilamockingbrd posted 14/07/2015, 05:58
@Puggsly

Just about every genre is more popular on the PS4. Its amazing that the PS4 has just a bit less than 2x the userbase of the XB1 yet the game still had a higher attach rate on the PS4.

Typically you see diminishing attach rates the larger the user base.

@Dadrik - Well not all great games have a big audience on every platform. RPGs still do great on Xbox. This game has a big following in Europe and Sony has huge edge there.

And lets chill out guys. No need to be defensive.

Great games appeal to gamers in general, you know.
RPGs use to do great on Xbox, so talking about "Sony fans" is nonsense. Dragon Age, Fallout, Skyrim, Fable, etc...

@fireburn95 - Given the sales its pretty obvious this style of game appealed to Sony fans.

My thoughts exactly, I forgot about AC:Unity but it's a great example. It sold amazingly in the US thanks to the exclusive marketing and bundles.

fireburn95 posted 08/07/2015, 01:08
Yeah Puggsly seems he can justify reasons for sales lol.
'it appeals to Sony fans' as if he knows what appeals to every sony fan.
To me this just plays out as a failure from Microsoft. Third party marketing is meant to give consumers a reason to buy your console. This is a European-made game. They could have advertised it much better.

Sony took the initiative if advertising the game within their allowed limits not being a marketing partner, therefore getting the larger console boost percentage wise and selling three times the games.

Microsoft did great bundles for US for AC and probably should have done the same here, it would have definitely beat ps4 in USA then.

Dadrik posted 08/07/2015, 11:16
Also, there isn't even a 2:1 ratio for the PS4 in terms of userbase, and this game has a 3:1 ratio in favor of the PS4 version. 3rd party games sell more on the PS4 because now pretty much everyone knows it's more powerful, has almost every game running better. I won't talk about exclusives, but it also does play a role.

Even if we're only talking about the US, where the XBO is doing really good, most of the multiplatform games sell better on PS4. So saying it's only thanks to Europe is a little silly, I think.

The PS4 is dominating the beginning of this gen, and that's the case everywhere.
I still expect the end of 2015 to make things move a bit though, with Halo 5, Gears of War, Tomb Raider, etc... even though the PS4 will have some solid bundles.

Dadrik posted 08/07/2015, 11:09
150k+ more for the PS4 version only in the US, despite the heavy marketing for MS, and the popularity of the Xbox brand there (also, close console sales). So yeah, it's quite a third party failure for MS imo.

darkenergy posted 08/07/2015, 05:26
On second thought the userbase difference between the PS4 and One is the reason for these results.

darkenergy posted 08/07/2015, 05:21
Thanks to Europe that this sold well compare to the One so there is nothing to laugh at.

Mr Puggsly posted 08/07/2015, 12:21
@fireburn - Oh, you just wanna laugh and mock? Okay... grow up.

Bottom line, this game appealed to Sony fans. Even many that likely didn't play Witcher 2. The dominance in Europe is why the PS4 version did exceptionally well. Basically, I'm just looking at why it happened.

It wasn't the exclusive irony, but in addition to the fact that you seem to ignore, the marketing and the hard bundles, it was ironic, and embarassing.
Hard bundle + Marketing + footage at E3.
Obviously it was never gonna sell as much as ps4, but a 3:1 ratio is quite laughable.

Mr Puggsly posted 07/07/2015, 11:12
@fireburn - Witcher 3 was so hyped that it gained an even bigger audience than Witcher 2 on 360 had.

For example, many people that played Oblivion on PS360 never touched Morrowind on OG Xbox.

Hence, much of this Witcher 3 audience on 8th gen consoles is new to Witcher. Hence, there isnt much irony.
