Will this game be the first non-Nintendo game to reach 1m units retail? Also, by the looks of it, it appears it will reach the retail million before Pikmin 3. Those games have been neck and neck.

@PlayMatt - Have you even played the game? No? So, why are you bothering to comment? It's an entertaining game that utilizes the Gamepad in innovative ways. The witty dialogue contains inside jokes and references that appeal to adults giving the game a quality that appeals to all ages. Just because you don't think a game caters to your limited tastes, what makes you think anyone cares to hear which titles you deem to be "sh*t"?

All Nintendo funded / produced / published / promoted games (in such games there's Satoru Iwata mentioned as "executive producer" or earlier - Hiroshi Yamauchi) considered 1st party projects by the company. Even when Nintendo don't own the brand (LEGO, Fatal Frame), they co-own the game in the end and such game cannot be released on competitor's platforms. Tou can visit NCL's site and see for yourself how Nintendo put projects like W101 or Bayonetta 2 under "Nintendo Games" http://www.nintendo.co.jp/software_lineup/software/#wiiu-n alongside with Mario, Smash etc.

As a series both owned and developed by a third party, I still don't consider it first party.
Message | Report
Meret posted 10/08/2013, 01:25
@curl-6 This game technically a 1st party release. Nintendo fully funded it, produced it and published worldwide. Just like with Fatal Frame 4, Remake of 2, Sin and Punishment, The Last Story, The Wonderful 101, Bayonetta 2 etc etc from japanese developers, LEGO City is a Nintendo funded project. You can see "Executive Producer: Satoru Iwata" in the credits, just like with all Nintendo's games.

NoirSon posted 09/08/2013, 10:52
@curl-6, Nintendo doesn't own the Lego brand but as far Lego City Undercover goes, they paid to have this one made so this isn't a real 3rd party release, just like Bayonetta 2 won't be or how the N64 version of Goldeneye 007 was Nintendo's.

Considering its a Wii U title, probably had two weeks of tv advertisements from what I have seen and isn't based on any major franchise like the other Lego games, these are strong sales.

@Think

1. In general, developers don't depend on sales to make money. The developer is paid by the publisher and the publisher takes the loss or reaps the benefits. Of course, it's quite possible that the devs and publisher have some kind of agreement on bonuses based on sales, but the devs should make money regardless. The publisher on the other hand may not make money, but the publisher is Nintendo, and I think they'll be happy with this.

2. The game is selling fairly well. It's legs are way better than the average game, and as more Wii U software comes out and hardware rises, it should continue to sell for a while. I'm about 95% sure this game will hit at least 500K, and unless I'm grossly underestimating the cost of the game, that should be enough to break even or make a tiny profit. Combined with the 3DS version, I'd say Nintendo and TT Fusion will be keen on continuing this partnership.

TK14 posted 10/06/2013, 05:35

Wii U software sales are actually pretty good for its install base; if this had the same attach rate on say, 360, it would be over 6 million. It's the hardware sales that are dismal. Once those pick up, so should games like this.
