sold well for a game that features spiders and scorpions as main characters. c'mon it's original but did anyone really get attached to these characters? Also 150K within a year of release for this type of game is a disappointment but not a total failure; as they can reuse the graphics engine (if they could clean it up a bit) for other games on the Wii!!

I dunno primogen I think Muramasa got way more advertisement than Madworld. Muramasa got a release party at the nintendo store. Madworld did have some tv commercials but it was like days before it came out like you said. Nintendo is smart for advertising their games the other companies should catch up...

primogen18 posted 06/10/2009, 03:43
to sum it up peachy, yes, it does have to be shoved down some throats to be known. All of those titles you listed barely got any promotion. Conduit and Madworld got commercials that lasted from around a couple weeks before release, to like a day after. I doubt they will get any holiday commercials as well. Deadly creatures/ Muramasa got NOTHING, so aside from a few people on IGN and here,(and myself) I can't name a single person who knows about it, including many who are Wii owners. Im sure we will see MKWii/DS commercials this holiday, and of course other first party Nintendo titles, along with maybe some brain age and layton commercials, these companies actually continue promotion.

pathetic sales for a top-notch, intensely high-quality game. thq should be ashamed for not promoting this worthy title, and wii owners should be slapped for not buying this. if terrific third-party titles like this, madworld, and muramasa don't sell, then wii is doomed to drown in horrific shovelware forever. and wii owners who complain about the lack of third party support have no right to do so... here is an AWESOME game, and it gets the cold shoulder!! does a great game have to be shoved down your throat before you recognize it as a winner!?

It amazes me when people don't understand why this did so bad. Is it so hard to figure out?

You're talking about a game where all you do is play as a tarantula or a scorpion. There's absolutely nothing appealing about this game, especially when you compare it to other games where you play as soldiers or swordsmen.

This should be a message to developers: if you want a core Wii game to sell, make it interesting.

bluedog recently, and regarding the issue of profits specifically, a THQ PR explained that for titles like DC, the range between 100k-400k is the desired ,and in the specific case of DC im guessing 300k would be fine.Thats a longshot but doable. You can browse for that interview. Not saying this is doing great, but THQ itself saying this is aiming for 100k-400k means they arent that surprised.

Intro94,

After I posted, I figured that is probably what you meant.

However, with THQ posting a $431 million loss this year, games that can only sell a couple of hundred thousand units will not be viewed positively by the senior management. Particularly when they contribute to that loss.

bluedog i meant as in overall, it still manages to sell ,in lesser amounts but still enough to add a respectable amount each month. If the game reaches 100k in 3 more months, and 200k within this year its a reasonable amount for a low key title.

Looking like little hairy legs could keep this afloat for a while yet considering the popularity of the Wii. On the other hand the Wii's popularity also means lots of newer releases fighting for that all important shelf space...

I've had the game since release but the repetitive gameplay is not really grabbing me but it's ok in small doses, very similar to how I feel about Madworld.

Im aware of production costs. And also that they do vary *wildly* between titles. This is a budget title, and i would be hard pressed to believe that with the minimal investment in advertisement they hoped for more.100k ensured sequels on budget wii titles(a lot less than 5 mil earning), that would mean that a profit is already earned with that.So enough with the non-sourced info.

@bluedog

The team gave a presentation at my school. I think the exact numbers was 32 full time, plus 3 part time/short term contract.

They gave no hints as to the budget of the game (other than what could be extrapolated from the team size). They did say that a significant amount of content was budgeted out of the game. There was supposed to be at least one extra boss battle with a raven (the concept art are they showed us was sweet). I remember one of the presenters specifically saying that adding that boss battle would have been too expensive, so they cut it to focus on making levels (better "bang for the buck" he said).

Hope this title has some legs...

So, in closing...

My nujber is based on the number of people on the team and how long they worked on the game.

Probably a few hundred people have access to that info, so it's not like top secret or something.
Message | Report
bluedog posted 19/03/2009, 03:49
On top of all that, they have mentioned publicly that the team had about 30 or so people on it. You do the math. A team of 30 will cost you about 300k per month. So now all you have to do is get the amount of time they spent on the game, add in additional costs for software, add in costs for QA, add in costs for marketing, add in costs for corporate support and you can come of with the number.

Not exact, but it will be in the ballpark
