If you live in the UK, then I really don't need to tell you that the Olympics is heading our way, and it'll be here come the end of the week. If you don't live in the UK...lucky you, for you won't have had the press barrage that's led up to the games.

But, now it's here. In one weeks' time, the first medals will have been won (including in the Cycling Road Race, where Bradley Wiggins (first British winner of the Tour De France yesterday) and Mark Cavendish (first British winner of the Tour De France's Green Jersey last year, most stages won by a sprinter ever) will be looking to win), and the hype-o-meter will be in full swing.

Whose dreams will be realised, and for who will it turn into a nightmare? Would you be able to hold your nerve on the world's biggest stage? And, after the 3 weeks, which country will come out victorious? Only time will tell...

So let's turn the focus to the home nation, Team GB. In Athens, they won 9 Gold Medals, 9 Silver Medals and 12 Bronze Medals. In Beijing, they beat every single stat, winning 19 Gold, 13 Silver and 15 Bronze. So what about this year? Will the home support help, or hinder, the home nation?

And what about where they finish? In Beijing, they finished 4th, narrowly behind Russia, but a fair way behind the US and eventual winners, China. Can they go up a place overall this year, or even two, or three? Bradley Wiggins winning the Tour De France has no doubt encouraged the whole team, so it's certainly not impossible...

For reference, the medals table from the last olympics in Beijing:

So finally, we come to the events. A useful links to the full timetable of events can be found here, and a quick overview of each event can be found here

I do.  But if I didn't I certainly wouldn't have come to this thread much less posted in it.

Nice to see the Olympics is just around the corner, looking forward to seeing Track & Field, Swimming, and many others.

Really hyped about this now :) I've walked around the Olympic site quite a few times and around Stratford and the atmosphere is really building. I didn't think it would be anything special but the government seems to have done a good job. My dads company got given free tickets to the world diving championships at the diving centre and I was really impressed. Looking forward to seeing the wrestling and basketball.

Does anyone else here plan on attending without pre buying tickets? Im probably gonna try to go but it might be a bit risky not having tickets..

For some reason I'm not as pumped for it as I was in 2008 or 2010. :/ But I do love the Opening Ceremonies!

Might get into the Volleyball a little because that is always interesting. (And the swimming.)

Bought my TeamGB shirt, though I wanted a London 2012 one but meh, got my official pin and my tickets for the Hockey ready so, counting down the seconds to the opening ceremony so...yeah, not really that fussed to be honest!

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

Pretty excited! Foxtel here in Australia has 8 channels dedicated to it.

I'm hanging for the Marathon. Kenya has an insane team, 3 sub 2:05 runners which just blows the mind that these people can run at sub 3 minute km pace for 42.2kms.

Gymastics is always awesome to watch the strength and ability on show is amazing.

And Bolt vs Blake. The training partners. Blake coming in with a win at 9:75 over Bolt. Its whether or not Bolt will perform. The 100m is set to be pretty exciting.

Otherwise all the sports are pretty cool to watch, personally I don't get into sailing and the horse stuff.
