Rumor: Final Fantasy X HD to Use Final Fantasy XIII's Engine

by Jake Weston, posted on 23 September 2011 / 9,439 Views

Up until now, it was generally assumed that Final Fantasy X HD for the PS3 and PSP Vita would simply be an HD remastered port of the PS2 original. However, it appears that this is not so. According to PSTime, Final Fantasy X HD will not be a port, but a full remake, being made with Square Enix's Crystal Tools engine, famously used for Final Fantasy XIII, and its upcoming sequels Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

Final Fantasy X HD is set to receive a complete makeover, with the game being completely built with the Crystal Tools engine, as well as its still beautiful cutscenes being presented through a "Final Fantasy XIII 'filter'", whatever that means. Blitzball will also be receiving small changes, and an as of yet unknown online functionality will be added (online Blitzball anyone?). However, purists will be happy to hear that the core gameplay of Final Fantasy X itself will receive no changes.

I find it surprising that Square Enix has taken it upon themselves to completely rebuild Final Fantasy X with a new engine titles with a new engine, considering that they have consistently denied remaking Final Fantasy VII with modern technology.

What do you think of Final Fantasy X's remake? Do you think this means that Square Enix could give us more Final Fantasy remakes with the Crystal Tools engine in the future? Tell us what you think in the comments!

If it wasn't a rumor, and it is, I'd be crying rivers of joy and partying like it's 1999. MARK IT AS A RUMOR BEFORE I DO EITHER!

I would gladly join you in the crying and the partying lol

First day purchase for me.

Hmm, if this is true then this could be the first remake of a 6th Gen title rather than a remastering. I recently played Resident Evil 4 on the PS2, only the village level, in prep for the HD version. I have noticed very little differences between the two, same with Beyond Good & Evil and the Sly series boasts a brighter colour scheme, and some changed environments, but still nothing major. If this is a complete overhaul of the game's graphics like the upcoming Halo remake seems to be, then this is very interesting as to why other developer's aren't doing the same

there probably going to save and FF7 remake for a rainy day...besides they still havent remade 5 and 6 I would really like to see a remake of FF6!! Im betting we will see those games remade for the 3DS or Vita, since they remade FF3 and 4 for the DS.

SuperAnthony64 (on 23 September 2011)

I will be buying this. Only had a GameCube back in the day and ALWAYS wanted to play this game.

xinstantnoodlez (on 23 September 2011)

Maybe this remake is a test t see if they can do ff7..who knows

brendude13 (on 24 September 2011)

Sounds too good to be true. PLEASE let it be true :'(

finalrpgfantasy (on 24 September 2011)

i really hope that this is true, just imagine the sending scene with the graphics of FF XIII.

GuiltySpartan77 (on 24 September 2011)

Must buy for any FFX fan

Squall_Leonhart (on 25 September 2011)

First day purchase for me too as loved the game and this gives more convenience to play again :)

Wildchild_cob29 (on 24 September 2011)

Well, progression-wise, the game is very similar to XIII (very linear and no world map). So, i think it would be logical to do a remake with this engine. But, maybe they would have some difficulty recreating the vibe of the FF7 with the world map and all. or maybe they are just waiting for the next gen to make it look like advent children, like some said :P If it is true that they completly remake the game, i hope they do a new localisation, 'cause i think the VO in FFX is horendous. But that's just an opinion ;) (don't hate me for what i just said XD)

Thefrag (on 24 September 2011)

7! 7! 7! 7!

Michelasso (on 24 September 2011)

I wouldn't mind at all an FF X remake!! To just go HD would show its limits. And it wouldn't take so much like for a FF VII remake. FF X graphics were at an high standard already!

ljlrj (on 24 September 2011)

hopefully it does good, so than ff7 can come true

Jumpin (on 24 September 2011)

If it is a remake, then they should have used that effort to remake Final Fantasy 7 instead. I am not saying this because I am a fan of Final Fantasy 7 either (actually, I like 8 and 6 more), it is just that FF7 is easily the game with the largest fanbase, and the one everyone wants to see remade. It would be much more understandable if this was an HD port. This is sort of the same thing as Nintendo, next generation, making an HD remake of Yoshi's Island instead of Super Mario Brother 3 or World.

MRKs (on 26 September 2011)

Wow, if this is true it's weird that square didin't pick FF7,8 or 9 to remake. But like i read in the comments, FFX it's very linear with no world map so i guess it's understandable they pick this up. For me it's a must buy because FFX was great in terms of gameplay and story , and also it makes me glad that square is using the expensive Engine of FF13 :P

Teratus (on 26 September 2011)

I was excited for this until this article nothing from FF XIII was good and now im sceptical about this remake I shall have to wait and see how the game turns out beofre deciding if its worth my hard earned money I just hope that the battle system and sphere grid remains untouched though if i could add a request i would like a couple more summons Leviathon and Odin would be nice kinda found it annoying and unfair that all elements had a Aion except water :( yet they added a couple of Normal element Aions and 2 of them were stupid and pointless Yojimbo well he had his uses but made the game stupidly easy 1 hit kill anything was just a joke and that should be taken out and also you had to pay him get rid of that too and the Magus Sisters..... either make them commandable like the others or remove them all together

UnknownFact (on 25 September 2011)

Nice. Now I can buy it instead of half ass emulating it on my PC.

luisgvm (on 24 September 2011)

i think this remake will be freakung epic!. :D

Bman54 (on 24 September 2011)

The hard part for me is deciding whether to get it on Vita or PS3. It'll look nicer on PS3 and Final Fantasy is meant for consoles, but it would be nice to bring it around with me and play it anywhere.

Teratus (on 26 September 2011)

knowing sony the two will most likely be compatable with the transfarring system Kojima talked about

you will probably be able to transfer your save back and fore from ps3 to Vita in order to be able to play it anywhere :)

I have the original, thank god.

V-r0cK (on 24 September 2011)

Great news! However if they were to remake a game first it should've been FF7 seriously. Tho knowing Nomura he'd want to take his sweet time with the FF7 remake. My guess is Nomura wont do an FF7 remake until he can make it look like Advent Children lol. But yay for FFX!!!

Kyuu (on 24 September 2011)

-orgasms-

Last_Dream (on 24 September 2011)

If the rumor is true, I will absolutely buy Vita for this game alone.

Spedfrom (on 24 September 2011)

Too much work for not enough sales, I gather. Rumour will probably not stand the test of time.

brute (on 23 September 2011)

This is amazing, hopefully it's true, I haven't played FFX so this is great news to me.

JPL78 (on 25 September 2011)

Next, Kingdom Hearts HD remake please Square!

gigaSheik (on 26 September 2011)

Screw Final Fantasy. I want Monster Hunter. No one cares for this crappy, boring, old, repetitive and clichéd series anymore.
