Overview

The 3DS and PlayStation 3 continue to dominate as they both sell over 200,000 this week, while the nearest platform is the Xbox 360 at 122,000. Even with the 3DS this year on year sales are down slightly this week. Software sales are up week on week and year on year. There are seven debuts in the top 40, which is up from four last week. Software milestones this week: Wii Fit Plus crosses the 20 million mark. Seven games sold over 100,000, which is up from four last week, and the top 16 sold over 50,000, up from nine last week.

Worldwide Hardware

Hardware

Week on week sales are up for the PlayStation 3 and 3DS and down for every other platform. The 3DS is at the top with sales of 223,000, which is up 8,000 (4%). PlayStation 3 sales are up 21,000 (11%) to 209,000 units sold. The Xbox 360 is down just 1,000 (-1%) to 122,000. The DS is down 6,000 (-6%) week on week, as it sold 87,000 units this week. The PSP sold 78,000 units, which is down 7,000 (-8%). Total week on week sales are up 4,000 (0%) to 817,000.

Year on year sales are up for the PlayStation 3 and down for every other platform. The PlayStation 3 is up 56,000 (37%), the Wii is down 46,000 (-32%), and the Xbox 360 is down 37,000 (-23%). The PSP is down 69,000 (-47%) and the DS is down 137,000 (-61%). Total year on year sales are down just 10,000 (-1%).

Hardware Home Consoles

For this week the gap between the three home consoles has grown due to the increase in PlayStation 3 sales and decrease in Wii sales. The PlayStation 3 has a 49 percent market share; the Xbox 360 has a 28 percent market share; and the Wii has a 23 percent market share. The PlayStation 3 has been in sole position of first for the last ten weeks. The gap between the Xbox 360 and Wii has grown for a third week to 24,000. Compared with ten weeks ago PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sales are up, and Wii sales are down.

Hardware Handhelds

3DS remains well ahead of the DS and PSP for a third straight week outselling both of them combined for fifth straight week. The gap between the DS and PSP remains small at just 9,000 this week compared to 49,000 the week of July 9. The DS has a 53 percent market share this week for the current generation handhelds and the PSP a 47 percent. Compared with ten weeks ago 3DS sales are up and the DS and PSP sales are down.

Worldwide Software

Seven games debuted in the top 40 this week, up from four last week. Tales of Xillia (PS3) debuted at the top this week with sales of 509,000. The game launched in Japan, with no plans to be released elsewhere.

Dead Island (X360) debuted at number two with sales of 387,000. The PlayStation 3 version debuted at number four with sales of 224,000. The game launched in the Americas and EMEAA and will launch in Japan on October 20.

Resistance 3 (PS3) debuted at number three with sales of 274,000. The game launched in all three regions.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine (X360) debuted at number seven with sales of 131,000. The PlayStation 3 version debuted at number 11 with sales of 67,000. The PC version debuted at number 32 with sales of 19,000. The game launched in the Americas and EMEAA and will launch in Japan on October 27.

Biohazard: Revival Selection (PS3) debuted at number eight with sales of 88,000. The game launched in Japan with no plans to be released elsewhere.

Rise of Nightmares (X360) debuted at number 25 with sales of 28,000. The game launched in all three regions.

Super Sentai Battle: Ranger Cross (Wii) debuted at number 37 with sales of 17,000. The game launched in Japan with no plans to be released elsewhere.

Other games in the top 10 that are not debuts include Madden NFL 12 (X360) at number five with sales of 160,000. Madden NFL 12 (PS3) is at number six with sales of 137,000. Star Fox 64 3D (3DS) is at number nine with sales of 81,000, as the game debuted in the Americas and EMEAA, while it already launched in Japan July 14. Mario Kart Wii rounds out the top 10 with sales of 67,000.

Hardware

Week on week software totals are up for the PlayStation 3, and 3DS, down slightly for the Wii, Xbox 360, and DS, and are down significantly for the PSP. The PlayStation 3 takes the top spot this week with 2.44 million games sold, an increase of 686,000 (39%). The Xbox 360 sold 1.64 million games, a decrease of 39,000 (-2%). Wii software sales are down slightly to 1.18 million, which is a decrease of 28,000 (-2%). The DS sold 715,000 games, which is down only 18,000 (-2%). PSP game sales are down significantly compared to last week with 299,000 games sold, a decrease of 104,000 (-26%). The 3DS sold 292,000 games, an increase of 40,000 (16%). Total combined software is up week on week to 6.56 million games sold an increase of 537,000 (9%).

Year on year software totals are up for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and down for the Wii, DS and PSP. The PlayStation 3 is up 1.21 million (98%), the Wii is down 569,000 (-33%) and the Xbox 360 is up 415,000 (34%). The DS is down 635,000 (-47%) and the PSP is down 407,000 (-58%). Total combined software is up 304,000 (5%) games sold year on year.

Software Home Consoles

For this week the gap between the three home consoles software sales grow significantly due to one of the biggest PlayStation 3 games, Tales of Xillia, launching in Japan. The PlayStation 3 has a 47 percent market share, the Xbox 360 with a 31 percent, and the Wii with a 22 percent. PlayStation 3 software sales are at the top for a third week, topping two million for the first time for any platform since the week of April 23. The Xbox 360 is in second for a third week. Compared to ten weeks ago the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are up and the Wii is down.

Software Handhelds

The DS remains at the top as the gap between it and the PSP grow, as the DS has a 71 percent market share and the PSP has a 29 percent market share. 3DS software sales are right behind the PSP. Compared to ten weeks ago the PSP and 3DS are up and the DS is down.

Soon 3DS software will surpass PSP software. By the end of the holidays it will pass DS software too. Great Job. 2 weeks, 360 finally gets some light. 360 needs a price cut, PS3 is slaughtering. Tales of Xillia = Awesome! Can't wait.
