John Carmack says PS3 is Second Best Console Ever, 360 the First

by Jake Weston, posted on 15 August 2011 / 4,728 Views

John Carmack is a legend in the video game industry. Founder of id Software, John Carmack has helped give birth to titles such as Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and this year's highly anticipated Rage

Of course, Carmack and the rest of id Software have always been known as PC developers, with Rage being their first major foray into consoles. So, what does the legendary John Carmack think about the current consoles? In an interview with RipTen, John Carmack said that the PlayStation 3 was the "second best console ever made". In response to the inevitable follow up question of what was the first, he replied "the 360".

Of course, the comments appeared to be mostly in jest, but it's always interesting to hear what developers have to say about consoles. Carmack elaborated that the PS3 isn't necessarily worse than the 360, just that the dev tools weren't as good. He also admitted that Rage actually runs better in spots on the PS3 version due to the PS3's better processing power.

There you have it folks. What say you?

Out of two consoles he was ever interested in, being second doesn't mean much. Heck, even being first is almost meaningless.

_mevildan (on 16 August 2011)

Actually he was interested in nintendo consoles first but nintendo messed Id around a bit which put them off for a long time. Read up about it (rats and green blood should get you there).

Why am I not shocked that actual news articles are up hours if not days late, but if a game designer says he lovessss a console it is up in a matter of minutes?

Hyruken (on 15 August 2011)

@Moreno He is the guy who made Wolfenstein,Doom,Quake etc He pretty much invented first person shooters and scary games. The guy is one of the most important people in gaming history. When he talks, people listen. Now you know who he is.

Opinions aside, the PS3 is harder to program for and to tap the power of the PS3 optimizations must be used - this is time cosnuming and most devs do not do this. On the other hand the 360 has a more powerful GPU then the PS3. You always hear how PS3's cell has more potential ( if optimizations are used ) , but you never hear anyone tell you PS3's weaker GPU holds back the entire system. All things being considered, the 360 is as powerful as the PS3 if not more because of the GPU and the memory system of the 360. The PS3 memory system was nerfed right before production to save Sony more money. There you have it Sony fans - the mighty CELL processor - held back by PS3's own memory system and GPU.. the chain is only as strong as the weakest link...

So you mean that guy that hasn't done shit for the industry since Quake, while the genre he "invented" has progressed mightily without (or rather despite) his efforts? Wolf 3D, Doom, and Quake were all important games, but Carmack's opinions on the modern industry hold about as much water as Nolan Bushnell's.

Did any of you watch his full QuakeCon 2011 interview? He basically calls out the PS3 for having limited memory, latency issues, and more. He also talked about how physical media is a hindrance, and how they had to work around the Xbox 360's use of DVDs. Even the PC got criticism for it's multiple video cards, and drivers to work around, etc. John Carmack just all around knows his stuff, and deserves respect not only for his work, but for his honesty.

It funny reading comments on here... A)Complaining on why this was posted, as it's pointless; YET there are already more replies then articles that were posted days ago. 2)For a site BASED on comparisons, it posts an article about a well known Developer and what he prefers to "work on" by giving his own 'comparison' as to why and people are up in arms. G) If his 'opinion' was PS3 in first place, this would be 'the best article made', and It would not be trolling but fact. He's just talking about what system is easier to work on, in no way is he saying the PS3 sucks, because we know that both systems are great.

gamerjerome (on 15 August 2011)

It's all about the games, not the console.

Icyedge (on 15 August 2011)

No wander when you only develop FPS lol.

in his opinion

blunty51 (on 16 August 2011)

John Carmack reminds of of George Lucas and Steven Speilberg. Good back in the day, but rubbish now. I might have been less harsh if I didn't have two 360's red ring on me.

maximus22 (on 16 August 2011)

I just wasted 2 whole minutes reading this.

Monteblanco (on 16 August 2011)

Why I would be surprised? If anything, I would expect a PC expert to prefer a console more similar to what he is used. Notice how he appreciate the PS3's power whereas his major complaint is the difficulty to use the development tools, which are obviously more removed from his PC experiece than the 360's.

Alby_da_Wolf (on 15 August 2011)

Being within reach of Ballmer's deadly flying chairs most probably helped him a lot making his mind up. :-P

TheWon (on 15 August 2011)

WoW a software creator who mostly works on PC software thinks the console that is the best is the one most similar to a PC. Who would have thought!

_mevildan (on 16 August 2011)

Except that the 360 is different from the type of dev he has always done on pc. All his engines have been OpenGL based over the years. 360 is DirectX based like 99% of pc games have been.

Microsoft is the leader of Video Games.

gorilla (on 16 August 2011)

Yea only problem is they do not make any video games. There is maybe 1 or 2 you can play like COD and Madden and NCAA. Every thing else is a Joke. Trust me if MS is the leader in Video games the Video Game industry is over! Thank your lucky stars its not. Now go play your outdated hardware and shut up like a good little troll. Please at least Sony still can make a desirable game. What is the last good game MS made outside HALo or Gears?......Exactly just Dance cnetral. Please.

"the comments appeared to be mostly in jest" Meaning he could actually care less about both systems. He was pretty much trying to MOCK them both. So take it with a grain of salt fanboyirls! Dont get but hurt he likes PC more jejejejej.

360 versus PS3 - hardware compared in depth. Cell is powerful yes.. but as an entire system Cell is slowed by PS3's weaker GPU.. in the end 360 is as powerful.. and more so if you consider optimizations must be used on the PS3 and not on the 360.. optimizations can be used on the 360 - but they arent needed as often http://www.anandtech.com/show/1719/2

gorilla (on 16 August 2011)

dude it is 2011 almost 2012 and you are here comparing OLD technology. They are both crap if you ask me. These things came out before the first gen Iphone and we are now on the 5th and you took the time to write this old fart is better then that old fart. They both suck their graphics suck they have less ram than a smartphone, and I would not pay more than 100 bucks for both of these POSs.

DialgaMarine (on 15 August 2011)

Oh what's that Bethesda? You just gave Carmack a payraise? Oh, ok.

eastside49er (on 15 August 2011)

If he means this generation, I agree. Hard to say what my favorite all time console is though. I have owned just about every console ever made so that would take some time to run through them all just to pick a top 5, much less a #1.

dirkd2323 (on 15 August 2011)

I think opinions are formed based on what people have worked on, its know in the gaming world that the PS3 is harder to develop for, but ounce you learn the system it makes the best games, the 360 is a great console, it has power and is easy and cheap to develop on, however the PS3 may be more expensive, and harder to develop for but the raw power, makes for a superior end result, in my opinion, its like having 2 great LCD tv, they both have a great picture and run fast, the 360 is the 120 htz, the PS3 is the 240, htz. This is shown in games like Uncharted 2, and 3 coming, God of War, Killzone, these games are a cut above all the rest, graphics and gameplay are unmatched, I love my 360, but it cant run a game like Uncharted 2.

rf40928 (on 15 August 2011)

PS3 - CELL more powerful yes, but GPU ( graphics processor ) is less powerful then XB 360's GPU.. PS3 memory system not as good as 360 either... 360 GPU has on die quicker memory as well.. PS3 is no more powerful as a system then the 360 is.. Sony hyped this up and most fan boys beleive them
