gamrDiscuss: How Much Will the Wii U Cost? - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 03 August 2011 / 7,644 Views

So the news is out, Nintendo will be keeping mum on the price of the Wii U until sometime next year. So that begs the question: how much will the Wii U inevitably cost?

Let's get a little background, shall we? Here are the costs of Nintendo's previous home consoles, at launch, as well as adjusted for inflation. (Inflation adjustments calculated using Wolfram|Alpha)

System Year Original Price 2011 Dollars
NES 1985 $149.99* $308.20
SNES 1991 $199.99 $324.56
N64 1996 $199.99 $281.82
GameCube 2001 $199.99 $249.64
Wii 2006 $249.99 $274.09

*There was a $129.99 retail bundle of the NES, but the $149.99 was far and away the dominant bundle.

Of course, there are other factors that will go into the price of the Nintendo Wii U. Development costs, market temperature, launch titles, and many other figures will be factored in. Even the recent overreaching price of the Nintendo 3DS will be a factor in pricing the Nintendo Wii U.

So I leave it to you, noble readers. How much do you think the Wii U will cost? More importantly, how much would you be willing to pay for the console on day one?

Hey, the Wii released here for $1100. Do not complain man!

  • +1
Darth Naner Ghutto (on 04 August 2011)

Let's see. The Wii was released in Brazil at around R$2000~2500. Back then, that would be about US$1000, or four times the US price. The 3DS was released officially here for R$1200, which is around US$750, or three times the price. If the Wii U releases for $300 in the US and it costs 3x more here, R$1400 is a reasonable guess. That is, of course, if the dollar continues this cheap.

Pretty sure I have two threads with polls discussing this in the forums. One from E3 and one just after 3DS price cut to see reflections on this. First one had an average of $350 and the later one reduced that average to $300 based on new Nintendo thoughts post-3DS. I'm sticking with that, $300.

It will be free.

  • +4
Chrizum (on 03 August 2011)

There's a slight chance it will be $249, but it'll probably be $299 at launch.

  • +4
scottie (on 03 August 2011)

$299 for sure. it may have been $349 if the 3DS did well at launch

  • +4
Cheebee (on 03 August 2011)

299 would be my bet.

  • +4
Hephaestos (on 03 August 2011)

yeah 299 sounds fair.

MattOfSteel (on 03 August 2011)

$299.95 with a single "new" controller and bundled game.

NightDragon83 (on 03 August 2011)

$299... not too long ago, Nintendo probably could have gotten away with $349 or even $399 for the system, but with the recent 3DS launch debacle and obvious price gouging by Nintendo, not to mention the other HD consoles' inevitable price drops between now and next fall, no way can Nintendo get away with launching the Wii U at even a penny more than $299.99.

"Will" not "with"

I would have to go with 300$.

Toddifer (on 03 August 2011)

I'm going with $299.

  • +2
kupomogli (on 06 August 2011)

No less than $300.00, but I'm going to say $350.

green_sky (on 06 August 2011)

$599 US dollars. More like $299.99 or $349.99

  • +1
TheHowl (on 06 August 2011)

My guess for the price was 350$/400$ (250$/300$ for the console and 100$ for the controller), based on the following:
1) Wii came out at 250$, which is ~275$ now, but it will be ~285$ on April 2012 (most likely launch date). Knowing that WiiU is going to be slightly better than PS3/X360 (like the Wii was in comparison with GameCube/Xbox), it was very likely it would have a similar price.
2) PS3 and X360 should lower their prices to ~220$ until the end of the year, possibly bundled with games.
3) Kindle, the cheapest tablet, costs ~140$, so I cannot see how the WiiU’s controller could be less than 100$.

In this moment, after what has happened with 3DS, I believe Nintendo is considering a price between 300$ and 350$. I think that 350$ are appropriate for the “new” factor of the console and it is not a deterrent price for the early buyers. On the other hand, the 300$ level might give the console a greater initial momentum, providing also Nintendo with more guarantees of not having to do any premature price cut.

more than likely $300 or with these imaginary exchange rates we have in the world of electronics £330

  • +1
usrevenge (on 03 August 2011)

Add your comment...$299, but i think controlers will be $40-$50 a piece

  • +1
Heavenly_King usrevenge (on 04 August 2011)

RE LOL!!! You can only have one per console

  • +1
JaxxRaxor (on 06 August 2011)

After the big price drop on the 3DS I feel that Nintendo isn't going to try to overprice the Wii U. My guess is 299.99 USD. Maybe they will go up to 349.99 but I'm kinda leaning towards a lower price point.

  • 0
vengence (on 06 August 2011)

I'd say anywhere between 300 to 350

  • 0
chapset (on 06 August 2011)

300$ us or 179$ cad

  • 0
MARCUSDJACKSON (on 06 August 2011)

willing to pay at launch and not going to happen $179.99. it will cost $249.99-349.99 but i wouldn't price WiiU past $249.99 if i were Nintendo.

Hradekal (on 06 August 2011)

Holy crap, there's been THAT much inflation since then? Geeze.

  • 0

$279.99

  • 0
TheConduit (on 06 August 2011)

If there smart and have learned their lesson from the 3DS $249. Probable going to end up at $299 and hopefully not $349. Anything beyond $400 would be a hyge mistake.

  • 0
greenmedic88 (on 04 August 2011)

$299

  • 0
Red4ADevil (on 04 August 2011)

Perhaps at 249 after what happened to the 3DS. They've learned their lesson. anymore than that, then they haven't learned anything.

  • 0
Siko1989 (on 04 August 2011)

$299USD

and my dollars, about $449AUD

  • 0
Freyt (on 04 August 2011)

Wait.

So since 1985 the US dollar has halved in value? And the Wii that's priced 100$ more than the NES is actually priced cheaper?

Oh how much must my country fall.

  • 0
Jamix012 Freyt (on 04 August 2011)

It's called inflation. Money itself has halved in value, not just the dollar.

  • 0
binary solo (on 04 August 2011)

I'd be surprised at less than $299. But that's going to be at least $100 less than the launch prices of the 720 and PS4. So still highly competitive price point with a big head start. Sony won;t make the mistake of being the most expensive console out of the gate, or at least it will only be slightly more expensive. Question is, will anyone launch at a loss-making price? MS I think yes, which probably also means Sony will too. Wii U should launch at break even or a slight profit.

  • 0
Alby_da_Wolf (on 04 August 2011)

$900. People will look for a third job to afford it. O-)

  • 0
ChichiriMuyo (on 04 August 2011)

I think $250 is most likely, and $300 is the very high end. A lot of the power advancements over the competition that Nintendo will see will be from newer architecture and improved baselines. Based on the rumors circulating, the actual parts involved (minus the controller) are just about in line with Xbox 360 Arcade prices. Maybe a tad higher, but given the diminishing returns of supporting older hardware over a long time period it may also be cheaper. The real question mark here is the controller, and I cannot fathom it costing anywhere near $100 to produce. I doubt a replacement controller will be sold anywhere near that at retail.

Marks (on 03 August 2011)

Could well be $400 with how cocky Nintendo has been recently with the 3DS and all. More realistically $300. I can almost guarantee it won't be under $300

  • 0
Derixs (on 03 August 2011)

I say $249.99

  • 0
thekitchensink Derixs (on 03 August 2011)

Agreed. $300 is way too high considering recent developments around the 3DS, but they will need to make a profit, too.

  • +1
Salnax (on 03 August 2011)

$300.

  • 0
BrokenBones646 (on 03 August 2011)

Obviously around 300, any more and people will just get a ps3/360 any less and they can't profit off it

  • 0
AnthonyW86 (on 05 August 2011)

Why don't they just release a remake of Twisted Metal: Black Online first? I loved that game(the original Black version) and i'm sure it will sell pretty well. Just look at God of War collection.

  • -1
lololol (on 04 August 2011)

$349.99 maybe. If not then £299.99. And it will probably sell for £250 even though thats about $450

  • -1
MsClasher (on 03 August 2011)

I'll say - Console 349,99USD , Game 59,99USD and Controller to be 89,99USD but I don't know...if they said it will have slightly better graphics than PS3/360 than I'll say 249,99USD for the console

  • -1
Dgc1808 (on 03 August 2011)

350

  • -1
kayoss (on 03 August 2011)

I will have to say $399 with a remote and one game.

  • -1
mexmen92 (on 03 August 2011)

$349

  • -1
Kwaidd (on 04 August 2011)

I'd drop 300 w/out blinking an eye...perhaps 350. but even if i have to blink or jaw drop if its more, ill just have to have it anyways.

  • -2
ultraslick (on 03 August 2011)

$349

  • -2
GhaudePhaede010 (on 03 August 2011)

I am saying $349.99 USD. But I have a feeling the game prices will stay at $49.99 USD.

  • -2
ampharos GhaudePhaede010 (on 04 August 2011)

I'm with you on the console price. And I really hope you're right about the game price.

  • 0
Zlejedi (on 04 August 2011)

450$ maybe 400$ if they reconsider after 3DS launch failure

  • -3
IIthesaviour (on 03 August 2011)

I mean how much were the 360 and ps3 on launch? It's got to be well around $400 but id say a little over.
