GameStop: Half of Gamers Wouldn't Purchase DLC if it Wasn't for Retail

by Alex Co, posted on 19 July 2011 / 1,406 Views

According to a survey from retail giant GameStop, it says that half of gamers say they wouldn't purchase downloadable in-game content (DLC) if it wasn't for retail merchandising and that the bulk of the retailer's digital content sales is made up of DLC sales.

Research firm Baird has issued a statement about GameStop and the findings.

A company survey revealed that 50 per cent of buyers indicated they would not have purchased the content without the in-store merchandising.

The same survey also says that these same buyers would buy from GameStop again due to "the convenience of game discovery."

While digital-distribution is slowly being implemented in games and services these days, some people are stiill hesitant to pull the trigger when it comes to purchasing content exclusively online - with accounts and sites prominently being hacked in the news, I suspect this won't be changing drastically anytime soon.

Do you agree with GameStop's survey? Does retail merchandising reassure you of a game's DLC?

so misleading... 50% of people that bought DLC at gamestop wouldn't have bought it without gamestop's retail merchandising... That's totally different from surveying 50% of all the DLCs buyers... For all we know only 5% of the people that bought DLC did it at gamestop...

"A company survey revealed that 50 per cent of buyers indicated they would not have purchased the content without the in-store merchandising." So this could be any percentage of DLC buyers on the actual system. Makes it pretty worthless when do not know that.

Game Stop is starting to be like Paris Hilton. They think they are popular just because people talk about them. They are a rip off on used games and they never have enough in stock. I rather just walk into a wallmart at 12am and pick up a new release then having to pre-order it. Works 80% of the time.

I don't know many core gamers that do their regular game shopping at GameStop. I'm guessing their audience is mainly casual and mainstream who are less likely to buy stuff digitally.

If I wasn't able to buy Microsoft Points at EB Games, I would have never been able to buy any DLC. Same thing goes to pre-paid credit cards and PSN/Steam. Some people need retail.

Stop going to gamestop, they are the devil.

Having recently learned there's no sales tax charged on Microsoft points cards (at least where I've been buying them), I find this pretty easy to believe. Sure, it only saves me a few cents per card, but as much digital content as I've got, that adds up after a while.

Retailers are a critical part of the ecosystem for console, and the sale of games. They push and promote heavily what is going on. Also, parents buy their kids gift cards with digital downloads on them.
