No Dual-Platform Release for Skyward Sword, Says Reggie

by Nicholas Taylor, posted on 14 June 2011 / 1,291 Views

Given the impending release of Nintendo's new Wii U, speculation has lead to people believing that The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword will face a similar fate to the last home console game in the series, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, which was simultaneously released for the Gamecube and also as a launch title for the Wii.

Reggie Fils-Aime has denied such claims, however, saying that Skyward Sword will not be delayed, and will be released for the Nintendo Wii just as originally intended.

When asked the question "Last time, you had a dual release of the Legend of Zelda. It could run on the GameCube or on the the new Wii. It looks like there is no opportunity for that this time?" by the site Venture Beat, he replied simply "Correct. And it’s because Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword was built to be played with a Wii controller."

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is set to be released by this year's holiday season for the Nintendo Wii.

@iplayeverything and that's what some of us are actually going to do :). Bull is bull, I don't get the reason either. Not only is Wii U backwards compatible to Wii games, but it can also use Wii controllers for Wii U exclusive games. If they were to make a Wii U version, it could easily use the Wii-motes. Gotta love PR.

Totally expected. This is hardly news.

I'm glad Nintendo didn't decide to delay Skyward Sword for Wii U; I can't wait much longer to play it!

Aonuma and one of the game's American localisation officer confirmed this at E3. Thankfully, we won't have to put up with the delay such a move would likely have caused.

I hope this is true. But I've learnt from past experience that Reggie knows nothing - you have to wait for Iwata or Miyamoto to speak before you actually learn anything from Nintendo.

THANK GOD

er... Reggie dosen't know the wii U is backward compatible? Come on Reggie are you trying to lose Wii U sales? I always have to scratch my head when this guy talks. You can play with the Wii controller on the Wii U. So, there is no need for a separate release. DO NOT buy a Wii just for this game and then buy a Wii U. It will play and look the same SD quality in the Wii U. From what the other people at Nintendo are saying, the Wii U uses Wii-motes as well.

.... But doesn't the system support up to 4 Wii controllers?

Roma (on 14 June 2011)

how many times have people asked Nintendo the same question? when i meet him i will ask him as well :P

"Built to play with a Wii controller" Just like Twilight Princess was built to play with a normal controller but then ported to the Wii. I think it's very possible that they'll release it on the Wii U

TheDarkBender (on 14 June 2011)

I'm okay with that, although I would love to see it in HD You can still play it on Wii U thanks to the backwards compability :)
