Spanish Police Arrest Three Alleged PSN Hackers
by Stefanie Fogel, posted on 10 June 2011 / 1,317 ViewsSpanish National Police said Friday that they have arrested three alleged members of the "hacktivist" group Anonymous who were allegedly involved in the recent attacks on the PlayStation Network and various corporate and government websites.
According to police, the three men arrested were the local leadership of Anonymous. They say one suspect had a computer server in his apartment that was used to attack the PlayStation Store website, as well as two Spanish banks, the Italian energy company Enel, and government websites in Egypt, Algeria, Libya, Iran, Chile, Colombia and New Zealand.
It is not known at this time how much involvement the three suspects had in the attacks on Sony. Earlier this month, the hacker group Lulz Security, or LulzSec, claimed responsibility for the attack on Sony Pictures' website that exposed the personal information of an estimated 37,500 customers.
This is the first police operation against Anonymous in Spain, according to an official statement by the National Police. More than 2,000,000 lines of log chats and web pages were analyzed and used to track down the leadership of Anonymous in the country. The investigation was launched in October 2010 following a complaint by the Spanish Ministry of Culture after its website suffered a Denial of Service (DDoS) attack.
The three suspects have been released without bail pending formal charges.
