Nintendo's Project Cafe Officially Named "Wii U" - News

by Brent Galietti , posted on 07 June 2011 / 7,393 Views

The suspensful wait is now over, as Nintendo has revealed its new system to be named the Wii U. As rumored, the WIi U's controller has its own 6.2 inch touch screen built in, which can be used for playing games on, for drawing art, and for getting new views of the game you're playing. Also shown was a Wii Zapper-esque aiming peripheral and the ability to make video calls. Mentioned at the press conference was the ability to weigh yourself with the Wii Balance board and see the results on your controller.

The controller also has other features, such as:

  • Dual analog sticks
  • Backwards compatibility
  • Rumble
  • Four shoulder buttons
  • Speakers
  • Gyroscope
  • Camera
  • HD

The Wii U works by sending images from the main console unit to the tablet-esque controller, with no latency.

Also revealed is that certain games could be played on both 3DS and the WiiU controller. Mentioned in the press conference were Kid Icarus: Uprising and a new Super Smash Bros. developed for 3DS. (!!!)

A tech demo was shown of a bird flying through the blooming sakura trees of Japan, and it was breathtaking.

Lego City Stories was also announced as an open world action game exclusively releasing on the WiiU and 3DS. A full list of games announced can be found here.

interesting. i didn't think the whole touch screen controller rumor was true. will be great to see how this thing plays. i do hope that this is just a prototype cuz it kinda looks awkward.

The controller looks cool n all but I would have liked to hear more about the console itself, it was kinda just hidden in the background all the time.

Too bad they seem to be missing the opportunity for the controller to be a standalone device. I thought they would do that. I guess it would put the cost of the controller too high. It somewhat makes the difference between an innovation or not, its the exact same idea then behind the DS.

@VMEfinn,

lol it is a console not just a controller. They revealed the controller and kind of left the system specs/etc not mentioned. You are confused... Read up more.. Good attempt at a post though thinking it was just a controller and not a system.

So no Nintendo HD gaming for at least another year.

I find this 'U' disappointing. It is to big to offer precise gaming, to connected to use for stand alone gaming, and the battery life will probably be less than 6 hours which is going to make it a pain in the butt for keeping it charged.

On top of that, the Wii is already the least powerful unit available, and now it has to drive a second screen.

I say 'PS Vita' all the way

@BlazeKing79 its the lovechild between the Wii and DS, after being pumped with steroids and going Super Saiyan.

Rath (on 07 June 2011)

@Superman4. The main difference should be integration between the two in every game, as it will be guaranteed that any owner of the Wii-U will have a controller.

Got to be honest, not too stoked with the entire Wii-U idea.

@ Baalzamon

People already pay 90 bux for each Move+Navigation combo and they pay 70 for Wii-mote + nunchuck combo when it first came out (deals make it cheaper now).
So if they already pay $70-$90, $100 is not that large of a stretch.

I can't wait for this.

  • 0
Baalzamon (on 07 June 2011)

Ok, I didn't honestly think the rumored controller was true. Who in their right mind will pay $100-$150 to get each and every controller for their system?

Some of the stuff looks mildly cool. Most if not all of what the "new" controller can due has been available on the PSP/PS3 combo. The Wii lookslike it took it further and the screen is definitly larger than what the PSP has.

BlazeKing79 (on 07 June 2011)

Maybe I just did not read the article carefully, but what is this? Is this the Wii's successor, or the DS's successor? I'm confused.

so 200 dollar controllers or have they given a price. i knew the day would come when the controllers would be more then the console, but i did not see it happening so soon... im looking but not seeing is it 4 player max or can it do more? ill be shocked if the controller is less then 150, Nintendo normally does not take a loss on hardware . if it is under 150 a controller i might have to pick it up just to see what gaming with that is like looks bigger then the xbox duke controller i loved the duke

You will learn more if you pay attention. NIntendo is showing Wii-U console over at G4TV , "Project Cafe gets a real name". I am paying attention.

Now they can compete with their own 3DS... and what a horrible grip will that have on the hands

  • 0
mysticwolf (on 07 June 2011)

They didn't announce any first party titles. But they announce Lego City Stories. hooray...

  • 0
WiseOwl (on 07 June 2011)

I knew coming into Nintendo's press conference that I would like this new console, and I am sold. That does go with saying, Nintendo do have their work cut out for them. The games showed will be a great line-up for the console's launch/release. That's if every game showed will be available at the Wii-U launch. EA on board is always a plus for any platform, but I felt the need to see a few exclusives to their console that would have me in a unstable wreck for a week. Smash Bros was gasoline from Nintendo's first party. One or two exclusives from a 2nd/3rd party will bring the fire. Something like Metal Gear solid 4 or Alan Wake. I would have already brought a 3DS if it wasn't the crazy thought in my head. I think they made it ugly on purpose and after I brought one release a better looking one then i'm pis*d. And if i brought one I will not be buying another (I don't care how good it looks) so i'll wait. But in all i'm impressed.

Wii? U? Me? Them? Us? Who?

Anyhow, need to see what this is going to go for and the future. I am left... perplexed, but in a good way. Not sure how to process it.

Controller looks... freaking... awesome.

Second thought: my god, how much are these going to cost a piece?

I'm not the only one to note the remarkable similarities between the Wii U/controller and the PS3/PSV

kcoward (on 07 June 2011)

All the people that complains that Nintendo is kiddy with poor graphics cant really complain again. I await to see reasons why haters would justifying not getting this. By the way that demo with the bird looked near reality and it looked like it ran smooth. Wonder how much frames it ran at.....

drkohler (on 07 June 2011)

Technically as we have seen yesterday, a PS3/PS Vita combo can do exactly the same thing as the new Wii U magic controler thingie did on the Nintendo demoes...

  • 0

Wii U.... I didn't understand... XD... :O...

  • 0
SecondWar (on 07 June 2011)

They listed some core 3rd party support such as Battlefield, Assassins Creed, Dirt and Darksiders. But seeing as this console comes out next year, some of these games will be a year old by then. Will that really attract many at launch? Suppose its better than mediocre spin-offs.

  • 0
blunty51 (on 07 June 2011)

That name is pretty FAIL.

  • 0
drkohler (on 07 June 2011)

Unfortunately, absolutely no info was given on the hardware.
