Valve Interview: New Light on Portal 2

by Keith Sadler, posted on 15 March 2011 / 1,247 Views

The guys at Eurogamer sat down with Valve writer Chet Faliszek to shed a little light about Portal 2. PS3 users via Steamworks support will have fast updates, cross-platform play, Steam cloud saving and chat with the PC and Mac versions to look forward to. Asked whether Steamworks will ever operate on Xbox 360, he said:

"This is our first step with it. Sony's been a great partner to work on this. This is just our first experiment on it. What goes next? Well see."

Many have heard that Portal 2 allows users to download user generated maps from their PC bretheren, but that probably won't be available.

"You won't be able to just download a map for your PS3," Faliszek said. "There's some weirdness there. Part of the confusion on our part was, there are things we talk about wanting to do, and things we can do. It's this fluid relationship with Sony while we're trying to work out what's best for everybody."

"You won't be able to just attach to somebody else who has that content and download it. We would have to do something to have that happen."

What about Xbox 360 users? Will they have access to user generated content?

Xbox right now we'd have to package it up directly," said Faliszek. "When we do it on Steam we just make it inclusive to the package. We're seeing about that on PS3. There's nothing set on that."

@DR.GRASS You do know its 1 game that can be played on 2 different systems, not two games for two systems. You'll have to connect it to your steam account, And i don't think you can crossplatform with your own account. Ps3 AND Pc version have to use the same steam account.

...crossplatform *with* me.

He really seems to not answer the questions at all(?) I quite prefer straightforwardness, but I guess PR is a sensitive thing. It always amazes me when some feature of a product has no meaning to me and then it turns out to be a major bonus... My one PC/360 owning friend wants to buy the PS3 version, take the free PC version for himself, and then play crossplatform to me. I'm getting Portal2 for FREEEEE!

as long as microsoft continues to be rigid with live they'll never get something cross platform between anything. they would have to let other companies servers into live and its simply not going to happen. on the ps3 side, anything is possible, but it may not be practical
