ngmoco Boss: NGP "Dead on Arrival", 3DS is "Gimmicky"
by Nicholas Taylor, posted on 07 March 2011 / 10,526 ViewsNeil Young, the boss of ngmoco, a publisher mostly known for making games for the iPhone and Android phones, has predicted that Sony's new portable system, the NGP, will be "dead on arrival", and also said that the Nintendo 3DS is "gimmicky".
In an interview at the latest Game Developer's Conference, Young said that “I think PSP is done and the new [NGP] is dead on arrival,” and followed up by saying that “It’s really difficult to compete with an app store that has hundreds of thousands of applications and a wide range of options where the average price paid is around $1.20 and there are tens, if not hundreds of thousands of free applications that are really high quality.”
“So I just don’t think Sony’s going to be able to compete with that.” he concluded. As for the 3DS, he said it was "gimmicky", but that Nintendo's "great franchises" would help the console. “I think Nintendo will likely be competitive. My personal opinion is that the 3D piece of the puzzle is kind of gimmicky,” he said.
“But Nintendo has great franchises and there are tens of millions of people who want to participate in those franchises, so that always helps… But the real question is the degree to which there’s a third-party community.”
Sony's NGP will be releasing this holiday season in Japan, and supposedly, though not certainly, other regions as well. The Nintendo 3DS has already launched in Japan, and will launch on March 25th in Europe and March 27th in North America.

iThis guy is stupid nintendo is here to stay in the handheld market they have so many fans they've ruled the handheld market since its started ands they ain't going to lose anything Ngp is uncertain becuz many ppl aren't going to fall for it and I hate to say but u need a gimmick to survive in the gaming market also ninto 3ds and a0ngp are seeping into the android market with there stores
Honestly I think NGP has the potential to be better than an iPod Touch. NGP has G-network, iTouch (at the moment anyway) doesn't. If the NGP can measure up to the iTouch multimedia wise (including browsing), I think it could win out over the Touch. The iPhone/Android Phone market is a different story. More and more people these days want Smartphones. And even if the 3DS an NGP offer an experience that iPhone/Android can't rival, a lot more casuals are just going to stick with games on their Smartphone instead of paying a premium to get a standalone "traditional gaming handheld". Nintendo is here to stay. They have a legion of loyal Nintendo fans that will continue to buy. But Sony's position in the handheld gaming market is more insecure (at least outside Japan) as Apple/Android cuts more and more into their pie.
@late_release "NGP is a bit in the middle of a 3ds and iPhone which in current times is not favorable at all." I have no idea what that even means. What does it mean? How is NGP 'in the middle' of 3ds and iphone and how is that not favorable? Is this like monkey in the middle or something?
One thing is right: NGP is a bit in the middle of a 3ds and iPhone which in current times is not favorable at all. However Sony is known for turning the game to its own, so I think it has many other plans B,C,D etc in case NGP fails.
another lame person who wanna get people's attention by saying all these, that's a failure to me ok, just who the hell he think he is...
does this guy realise nearly 70% of iphones/ipod touches are jailbroken and have programs such as cydia and installous on them allowing people to get these $2 for nothing, it more likley that these mobild divices will get jailbroken as most of the games ect just dont warrent the asking price on them not to mention the control method is crap "a touch screen d pad and button on screen you cant even feel so your constantly losing contact with the virtual buttons, just try playing street fighter on an iphone its just retarded, as far as gaming for the masses is concerned the ipod touch/phone are dead in the water if there used as 100% handheld games consoles.
who's this Neil Young? he want to be the next Patcher? lol. i want to play Uncharted, Ninja Gaiden, etc, quality games, not crappy iphone/ipod games that last like 10 mins and you got bore of it. i bought a few games for my ipod and they cost like $2, but i got bore of them after 10 or 20 mins, waste of time.
Nintendo and Sony fans standing side by side........it brings a tear to my eyes. Nobody should get worked up by this clown though, I think he has seen all the publicity Pachter has gotten and wants to get some as well. We all know cell phone games are garbage compared to handhelds.
lol is this guy for real, tousands of apps on iphone/touch that are not even game related, id live to see the iphone/touch do a full fps game like cod or gears of war multiplayer, what about the racing sims, has he ever tried playing a racing game while traveling in a car down a road with constant bends (lol the gyroscope and acceleromiters get throwen all over the place making it impossible to play) 3DS and NGP wont suffer with these problems as they both feature somthing called buttons and a physical D pad/analouge "a very popular gimmick" one that the iphone/touch does not have, now tell us whats dead on arrival when you make games that last longer than 5 mins.
Totally agree Roma. The wii was also called "gimmicky" and look at the sales charts. PS3 and x360 has also gone "gimmicky" because they looked at the sales charts. Nintendo dominates the two hardware charts for this reason alone. These are the generations of the "gimmick". PSP offers no "gimmick" (well, none that stands out as prominent as 3D) that's why I agree with him that it could be dead on arrival... but who knows, only time will tell. Mobile phones have the power of it's massive (and rapidly growing) user base to give any handheld a run for it's money that's why Nintendo is offering something that no mobile phone or PSP2 can yet offer, 3D. (Fragmentation will be a major problem for Android phones though). It is obvious in this competitive market your product has to stand out and sony doesn't seem to realize this.
well anything new is gimmicky. if developers did not add new stuff because of them being gimmicky then gaming would not be what it is today! motion was gimmicky and so was touch and two screens and look where it ended up and what possibility they have created. i think that if you are a developer you should welcome new ways to create games as you might come up with something that will make you millions
I think that there`s more than one working and profitable business model for handheld gaming.
"Dead on arrival" sure, just connected to the wall socket and it will come to life...again!!! How many of your games last more than 5 hours, and what do you offer as a "replay" value?? Yeah that's right, don't consider yourself a full-flesh game developer, you have a ways to go buddy.
Most Iphone/Android apps are gimmick. I rather pay for higher price than crap games that only fun to play for few minutes.
@Mad55 That's called the iPod Touch. With the article, I kind of agree with him. No offense, but I do. The NGP has a lot to live up to, but the 3DS has already stormed out of the gate.
this guy fails lets see the iphone sell without the ability to call and just as a pure gaming device.
Iphone app makers: 1) first off most of you ain't game developers, so stop trying and only a handful actually are good apps like Cut the Rope and Plants Vs. Zombies most of them are crap that only have my attention for like 5 mins
It's proved by how much the Minis on PSN outsell retail games that 2 dollar games are much better than big budget and in the next generation people will only play free game - no need to pirate anymore. Are this guy in shrums?
ya but i still prefer them in stead of cheapo smartphone games... muhahaha...
Has there ever been any link between growth in the mobile gaming market and decrease in the regular software market? If there is, then I've sure as Hell missed it. The original article is old as dirt, by the way.
"if not hundreds of thousands of free applications that are really high quality.” Blatant lies I see.
From Nintendo and Sony fans all around the world sit down, and stop talking out of your ass (I doubt he can hear me), Nintendo gimmicks are the one's developers like you use, and please learn what dead on arrival means.
Ah, here we go...the 3D is a 'gimmick' and a 'fad' is it..? Hmmmmm...they said the same thing about motion controls as well years ago, and now just about every mobile phone has a motion sensor and the 360 and PS3 have both adopted motion controls as a control scheme. Yes, games for mobile phones are as cheap as chips but there isn't a greatm deal of money to be made as mobile phone piracy is the worst of the lot. And despite glasses-free 3D being a 'gimmick' and a 'fad' you'll see all new mobile phones in the not-too-distant future having that very same functionality.
I guy that makes games for the Iphone saying that the apple is the best ever as no credibility whatsoever. I guess that, if he made games for the NDS, it would be the greatest thing ever made by human hands, the same goes if he made games for the PSP
It would be a rubbish portable gaming world if all that was available was $1.20 "games" that barely last anyone 20 more than minutes. I paid more than 30 times that for games like The World Ends With You, Birth By Sleep, Pokemon and Burnout but definitely got better value for money with each. And why can't people wait until the release line-up of games and price for the NGP is announced before saying it will be dead on arrival?
Their most popular game is Rolando. The game they ripoff from the PSP game Locoroco. Yep, you definitely should listen to this guys.
No Neil, the NGP won't be fighting for your hundreds of $1.20-table scraps, you can pick up those from the floor and eat them too. NGP will be delivering FPS-online MP with dual analog thumbstick over 3G connection on the go and on a crytal clear quite large and beautiful led display and state-of-the-art graphics. And people will pay $40 for that, and they will also pay for DLC on top of it. Now can your app store compete with that? Yeah, I didn't think so.
I dont know about you guys but I have ZERO interest in this news. A Iphone/android developer? so he's actually developing for NGP. Ps4 is dead on arrival, next Xbox is dead on arrival And the PS3/Xbox/psp are dead NOW? yeah shure look at them, breathing live like never! go away...
