Hacker Takes Over Online Video Game - Holds It Hostage
by Harry Monogenis, posted on 17 January 2011 / 19,263 ViewsRunes of Magic player "augustus87" has somehow managed to hack the game's database and is demanding its German owners to meet his demands -- in the meantime he'll be holding the information he's taken from the database hostage.
The player has hacked the servers of the game's Western owners, Frogster. He's claimed that he currently has the data of over 3.5 million users, and will release it in waves until his demands are met.
He has quite a lot of demands, most notably being better security for its users (I'd say irony, but I don't need to tell you), Frogster easing up on the forum's strict moderation methods -- or so he claims them to be strict. There are in total 7 demands, his full statement can be found below.
Frogster has responded to this --they must have been surprised-- claiming that the information is old data from 2007 but they are still treating this as a "serious criminal offense"and have informed the German authorities. They've also established their very own "task force" and are marking everything he does as "evidence".
The hacker has also uploaded a video onto YouTube. Well, Google now knows more-or-less where he lives. Not the best of moves.

lol @ people overreacting. It's just a fucking game, I hope he deletes it all.
WELL... obviously we have a hacker on the internet! He’s climbing in your websites, he’s snatching your data up trying to hold it hostage. So you all need to hide your game, hide your information and hide your homepage because they’re hacking EVERYTHING out here.
I say, track him, arrest him, extradite him to the US, hold his trial in California, and sentence him to 2 to 8 years in Chino. Lets see if his demands can be "met" when he is bending over every night and letting his cell mate get some relief.
note to ms who are currently opening their arms to hackers to try and make sony look bad (sorry i know it's a different thing to this but), this is what happens when hackers are let loose on systems, you really think they all are innocent and just want homebrew, lol, oh well at least he has pretty much signed his own jail ticket
Thats awsome! He's holding a online video game hostage. I'm just going to get some popcorn set back and enjoy this. I hope he f-cks sh-t all up and makes sh-t a total mess and then they storm his house in a shot out. More fun for me, c'mon.
Judging by the demands regarding frogster treatment of employees, I'd hazard a guess that he is one?
sounds like companies need to step their game up on the interwebz if hackers are taking over
we should thanks those hackers who had give us all the jailbreak tools like iPhone jailbreak ext
thank you hackers for being douches and ruining our gaming experience
@nanbanjim, I know I'm veering off topic to talk about this, but you're right. Sometimes the writing errors on this site are ridiculous. I saw the word 'prophesising' in an article yesterday and many other mistakes all over the site. It's kind of sad, I think they should hire an editor.
"Must of"? Seriously? I'm going to go get a cup have coffee--do you see how stupid that sounds? I'm just making the same mistake in reverse. The sound you're trying to type out is "must've," a contraction of "must have." Same with "should of," "could of," "would of," etc. Apostrophe-vee-ee. Freaking learn it.
Think this guy needs to relax. Definitely a douche that needs a beating to get his priorities straighted away.
@cory.ok he hasnt changed anything. He is blackmailing them so they change
totally against the law, you cant go into someone elses servers and change anything, it doesnt matter how horrible their security is
Sorry, but grammar-nazi moment. "Frogster has responded to this --they must of been surprised" Must HAVE, not must OF. My high school teachers were anal about that.
This is really funny. How can this guy be serious, 'dont delete threads' errr some threads are shit, same reasons as not closing threads hahahahaha
haha holding a online video game hostage, brilliant. can't wait to see how this turns out.
well the guy probably did that through a cybercafe.... or he's just dumb... in any case, wierd requests it concerns cheating, the forums and company employee treatment... I suspect he's a disgruntled dev overthere...
I played an MMO for few years and lots of people get mad at the community/admins and would have loved to do this kind of thing to them. People are just getting better at hacking and actually doing it now. People hack games all the time.
