Xbox 360 Tops 50 Million Units Worldwide

With our figures for the Americas now in, and getting processed for upload, VGChartz can confirm that Microsoft's Xbox 360 is the fifth biggest home console of all time as of Christmas Day 2010. The X360 has topped 50 million units worldwide this week, putting it ahead of the Super Nintendo, the former fifth place home console. X360 sales are more than double the sales of the original Xbox. The original Xbox was Microsoft's first console and was the second place system of the PS2 era.

Microsoft's latest system launched in November 2005. Thus the average sales per year are just under 10 million units, as the system has topped 50 million in 61 months. Notable systems such as Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Xbox 1, Gamecube, Dreamcast, and many others all spent equal or far more time on the market and failed to reach the totals attained by X360.

To date, the X360 is behind only PS2, PS1, Wii, and NES on a worldwide basis. Sony's PS3, launched a year later, with sales of 46 million is not too far behind X360, but ultimately Microsoft has reached 50 million units before Sony this generation. With Kinect pushing X360 to record levels, the system is likely to move even further up the list of biggest userbases ever.

While X360 has yet to pass the top two home consoles from Sony and Nintendo on a worldwide basis, X360 is already the fourth biggest base in the West.

Overall, the X360 is doing quite well as the 50m mark is rarified air. The only question now is how much bigger the X360 can get.

About the dying consoles... my ps and ps2 are still alive... but ps stoped working properly when i were about to buy my ps2 (some 5 years) and my ps2 still works, but have some difficult to read some games... But both i abused on bottleg versions (very lame copies) and gamesharks... so you can account those to the failure (with 12h daily play +-). Man i loved those days... 1 year with my ps3 at now (both were phat system)

@eliasg there still here just hiding under a rock, well apart from the odd few that think it wont reach 100 million, but half these morons diddnt even know about the ps2 sales figures till site's like VG ect started giving sales data, who would have thought the ps2 would even reach over 140 million and still carry on selling new in stores right up to xmass 2010 and even continue into 2011. just as the ps2 is the last gens most popular console this gen is the Wii that is the most popular this gen even if it still has last gen graphics it more than makes up for it in current gen motion based gaming and the 360 is taking after the Wii with its own inavative mothion based contorller free game play (if nintendo can redseign the gamecube and rebox it in an attractive unit and give it new contoller experiences and sell like hot cakes im pretty sure microsoft could be looking at doubling the 360's current sales figure)

@ Immortal .. no there isn't. 360 is 50 mill off 100 mill and has just had its peak year, if kinect does well next year, it could peak again. Wii is 115 mill off and had its peak year ... Not that either will make those respective marks, but 360 has more chance to hit 100 mill than wii hitting 200 mill ;-)

At 850k for the PS3 that would mean at least 378k for the week US, which would also mean VGC is tracking it at very close to 09 levels for the month. Yea, we will see about that come NPD. 1.228 versus 1.331 to be exact.

Its New Year's Eve guys - we've got 40 people coming to my place for a party, and Brett is likely partying about. The latter is what matters anyway, he is the only person who can upload data. I'm pretty sure Wii will be around 1.7m, X360 around 1m, and PS3 around 850k for those dying to know though.

that's pretty awesome! too be fair, I've bought 2. had an arcade one for a year and a half than bought the new slim. I think a lot of people have gone threw multiple systems either because theirs failed or they wanted a new one. with that said, that probably happens with all systems.

Congrats on hitting 50 million. PS3 will reach 50 million by mid 2011. End 2011 Wii at 100 million is possible. Also X360 should reach 60 million and possibly pass the NES.

Wow, I didn't know it took this long to process the data... Anyway, congrats to 360, though I can't believe how cocky some of you guys are getting. There's a higher chance of Wii hitting 200m than there is of 360 hitting 100m, :P.

@piggychan Yeah.. I bought 4 PS1s also, all 4 broke.. :P ..Also bought 4 Saturns, none of those broke. 4 Dreamcasts, none of those broke.. But yeah, 4 out of 5 360s that aren't broken is awesome.. 1 broken 360 out of the lot is pretty good if you ask me. It might not be fair that i'm counting 2 of the 360s that are brand new, still in box (resident evil, ffxiii bundles), but ohh well, numbers are a bitch.. :P

well i still think 360 can reach max 103m units by 2016? dissagree if you must but as far as PS3 and 360's concerned i've been right. had better tracking during the summer v the fall, but the end results the same.

@unknownfact being 50% from America and Canada isn't really that big of a deal. The Americas are just under 50% of worldwide console sales.

lol at all the stupid comments, the 360 is selling well and microsoft wont discontinue (not disconnect) to support the 360 and lets not forget production costs will come down further enabling microsoft to cut the RRP of the 360 even more, try to cast your mind back to 2004/05 when the ps2 slim had its price slashed to just 100 pounds, its been 5 years since then and its still selling ???, the reason why its still selling is cause sony know's that without the ps2 or at least the continued support for there last gen consoles would result in a lot of upset fans that could have gone to rival formats (just imagine what would have happened if sony just stopped production and support for the ps2 4 years ago, the ps3 sales could have taken a huge hit maybe even causing the ps3 to be sonys last console). the 360 will continue to grow and as i pointed out earlier there will be RRP (recomended retail price) price cuts, the 360 could in a few years time only cost 100 pounds and the kinect sensor could only cost 30 pounds, just cast you minds back to 2005 when at launch the 360 cost 290 pounds and you only got a 20gb hdd with a component cable, now in 2010/11 you pay 200 pounds and get a 250gb hdd and HDMI also the console is so much more reliable. people who think sales will die out are just stupid, no cosoles before this gen have ever had such inovative technology added to the already awsome technology thats already there and its only the start, every console in the past hasnt evolved like the current generation of console have.

Well this confirms another million seller week for the 360. How big will it get? I have no clue. I knew 2010 yearly sales would be above 2008 sales, but not by 2 million. I thought 2009 would have been Sony's peak year, and I was wrong about that too. I still feel 2010 was a peak year for the PS3 and 360, I don't think the PS3/360 can post stronger sales after Wii has declined in sales again. I feel Kinect will hold 360 sales for 2011 above 10 million, and I can see the 360 selling 20 million for the three years after that. Then sales will really start to die off. Realistically 80 million is acheiveable, and 90 million is possible. 100 million is wishful thinking, but boy would MS be happy if the 360 outsold the PS1. However with both HD consoles relying more on sequels to established IP's then introducing new IP's, I really feel this generation has reached its peak.

@potable_toe If Xbox360 passes 15 million in 2011 there is no way in hell 2012 will be the last year in production. PS2 is selling much less then that per year and still in production.

@ Jlmadyson I'm with you on that. Believe that in 2011 the 360 will see sales of around 13-14 million and maywell hit 15 million (presuming it's momentum continues) then from the start of 2012 to, what i believe will be its last year in production, the end of 2016 it could well reach and even surpass 30 million additional sales pushing it to above 90 million at the least. This is of course assuming it continues to stimulate consumers through atleast the next 2 years.

I say the wii will hover around 100 million because by the time it sells another 20 million consoles an new one will be out and sales will slow right down but it could beat PS1. I also say that 360 and PS3 will reach pass the NES and move to around 80 million each with PS3 will gain the lead over 360 because SONY will sell the PS3 longer and if MS does what it did for the orginal xbox and disconnect it we will see PS3 take the lead. tho it could take the lead next year

congrats MS ,i felt it could in 07, but now i think it can pass my furthest guesses, ive always felt 2012 was the earliest they could start a new gen but the later the better, this gen started way to soon for all involved, and i think they know that now

Go back to 2005 and you will be hard pressed to find anyone who thought it would get anywhere close to 50 million. I'll say it right it could very well break 100 million before it is all said and done. Be back in 5 years.

Sure, people will spin things another way now, but the truth is that the 360 has shocked and awed. And its not even over.
