Since we already ran an article about Sega’s New Toilet Videogame initiative, I was hard pressed to find a suitable entry for this week.  Thankfully Konami did my work for me by announcing a new game in the point and click adventure / puzzle genre.  Called Doctor Lautrec and the Forgotten Knights, a sense of Déjà Vu might overwhelm you as you find out the details.

The game follows a man by the name of Jean Pierre Lautrec, a 19th century Parisian archeologist, and his ragtag group of assistants including a pet monkey named Kiki, and a university student named Sophie Couberti.  They travel the French country-side solving puzzles.  Hmmmmm, that sounds eerily like another series of games that many folks like to play, namely the Professor Layton series.  While not calling Konami out on outright plagiarism, this does seem a bit too similar to be a coincidence.  Just in case, let’s check our chart:

Yeah, looks like winner!  Copy or not, I’ll definitely play it as I can’t get enough of these kind of games!  Here are some screenshots as well:

Yeah, and she looks so innocent. Poor girl.

What is that man doing with that girl? I'm not saying anything, but a guy with a mustache like that, and she's supposedly a student, and they are both used to dealing with monkey business...

I've yet to get into the Professor Layton series but I reckon I'll enjoy so it's in my list of games of grab. Strangely enough though, I'm more interested in Doctor Lautrec off the bat then with Layton, which only caught my attention in the first place because of the extremely positive reception. It's probably the character design, I can be pretty shallow sometimes, and I just think Sophie is adorable.

It's obviously his evil twin brother. I mean, just look at his stare. And a college student, uh? How convenient.

solving puzzles is a bit generic too eh?

Podings (on 19 December 2010)

Layton is not 19th century. >:( It takes place in a conveniently stylized version of 50s-to-modern London.

MetalGear_94 (on 19 December 2010)

If it's as good as professor Layton, I'll buy it
