WTF!? Moment of the Week - Welcome to the Jungle

by Stephen Kelley, posted on 25 November 2010 / 1,310 Views

Radar Online tossed an article up yesterday showing court documents that prove Axl Rose is an enormous whiny baby.  Basically Axl decided to stroke his ego a bit this week, and noticed that a game made a few years ago suddenly makes him mad far after the fact.  Remember how Slash was in the game Guitar Hero III?  Apparently that simple fact has caused the black gates of hatred to open in Axl’s heart and toss out a bunch of frivolous lawsuits. Here’s the basic lowdown:  Axl owns a large portion of the rights and such to the Guns N’ Roses intellectual property, so he was the go-to guy for the inclusion of music into the game.  When asked to use a few songs on Guitar Hero III, he said yes.  Next thing you know, gamers everywhere are playing as Slash in “Welcome to the Jungle”, and everyone rejoiced.  That is, all except one small guy with orange cornrows.

Rose claims that he only gave permission for Activision to use the song "Sweet Child of Mine", which was used in Guitar Hero II, and that any references to Axl, Slash, Guns N’ Roses or Velvet Revolver (Slash’s band at the time) were to be left out.  Axl seeks $20 million cold hard cash for damages.  If Activision did trick Axl into giving them the rights whilst breaking a vow not to let his former band mate turned enemy (Slash) appear in the game, then that’s a bad situation.  My problem with this case is that Axl should have sued years ago, as the game came out in 2007!

What are your thoughts?

@Jumpin True, he has every right to defend his music if it was used without his permission. What people are annoyed about is the timing of the situation. It took 3 years for him to either a) find out his music was used in the game or b) final act and sue Activision.

this guy lives off lawsuits! first you ruin my music, now you try and ruin my games? I hate you Axl.

If they used his property without his permission, then he has every right to sue them whether it be 2007, 2010, 2017, or 2071.
