Nomura Talks More About the Three Upcoming Kingdom Hearts Titles

At E3, Square Enix showcased three Kingdom Hearts games: Birth By Sleep for PSP, Recoded for DS, and 3D for 3DS. Nomura gave some interesting details regarding the three titles.

Starting off with Birth By Sleep, Nomura says in an interview with RPGSite.net that the game is so massive that they could have called it Kingdom Hearts III.

"This isn't just some handheld spin-off. This game is so massive, it's easily as big the two PS2 titles. This game could've been called Kingdom Hearts III and the fans wouldn't have been any the wiser."

Nomura was also asked about Kingdom Hearts III but he responded, "Right now, Kingdom Hearts III isn't in development, but this is a popular series." Kingdom Hearts III will come eventually, but for now Birth By Sleep should be a good replacement.

Famitsu.com also managed to interview Nomura and Andriasang.com has translated it. On Recoded, it seems while h.a.n.d (previously developed Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days on DS) is developing the game, the Osaka team (Birth By Sleep) is also giving a hand when it comes to developing. Yasushi Yasue who is the co-director for Birth By Sleep is also the battle planner of the game. Birth By Sleep was acclaimed for its fun battle system when it released in Japan so there's a good chance Recoded will have one as well and probably better than 358/2 Days' battle system. Also, it seems Recoded will have hints to the story details for the next "major" Kingdom Hearts title besides Birth By Sleep, Kingdom Hearts 3D for the 3DS.

Apparently, Square Enix started developing Kingdom Hearts 3D when Nintendo provided them general details for the 3DS. Nomura planned a general framework for the story and gameplay that accompanies the 3DS's visual expression.

While "Kingdom Hearts 3D" isn't the final title, Nomura noted that 3D is actually an abbreviation of the game's subtitle. Also, Famitsu pointed out initial screens which had Sora and Riku in situations not in the original Kingdom Hearts. Nomura responded,

"This is because it's not a remake, but a completely original game. This time, Sora and Riku are the two main characters. We're currently in the process of selecting new worlds."

"'KH3D' will be a title that enters a new step to follow the three games whose production was announced simultaneously, '358/2 Days, Birth by Sleep, and Coded."

They should have called Birth By sleep Kingdom hearts Zero, not only would it have sold more because of the cool name, but it's just so cool

My money is that KH3 won't come out until the next generation of consoles hit. Basically, most of the console development right now is probably aimed at Versus XIII and trying to overcome the flaws/criticisms that were thrown at XIII. Also while the PS3 has been gaining momentum, Square Enix probably would feel more comfortable waiting to see if the next generation would be the better choice of the KH sequel. Due to how variable things are going to be with the add on motion controls of the HD consoles, the Wii's console limitations and the fact that the portables are Kings in Nippon.

Btw, apparently there's another KH game coming besides 3D and Recoded that's not KH3. KH3 is soooooooo far away.

Soriku (on 17 June 2010)

IMO KH 3D might be something like a KH3 part 1.

Actually I believe the games so far for Kingdom Hearts are: PSP-------------- Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep (or 0) PS2-------------- Kingdom Hearts 1 GBA------------- Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories (or 1.5) PS2-------------- Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories (or 1.5) NDS -------------Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days (or 1.75) PS2 --------------Kingdom Hearts 2 NDS/Phone ----Kingdom Hearts Recoded (or 2.5) Now Kingdom Hearts 3D, too little info to tell at this point. In Nomura mind, the order is simply KH 0(BBS) KH 1 and KH 2. The rest is just milking.

btw.. he says birth by sleep is not a spin off, but as big as the main line KH games. Not suprising as it's the only one with the true XEHANORT.

I totally expect a Kingdom hearts 3 for PS3/360 or even PS3/WII (due to motion controls) or even all 3 of them..

Xmanny2009X (on 17 June 2010)

Looks like i'll be getting a 3DS.

Notorius.A.i.G (on 17 June 2010)

We still need a Kingdom Hearts for the HD consoles ! Or the Wii !

Fededx (on 17 June 2010)

I don't care about KH on 3DS, I want to play FF 7, 8 and 9 in beautiful 3D remakes on a handheld!!!

NightDragon83 (on 17 June 2010)

Really wish Birth By Sleep gets ported to the PS2 and/or PSN... would hate to spend $200 on a portable videogame system for just one game.

primogen18 (on 17 June 2010)

The KH series is getting alot of Nintendo love! 2 of the 3 new games are on DS/3DS

radiantshadow92 (on 17 June 2010)

By the sound of it, BBS should be enough for me until KH3. Just need to buy me back a PSP... :P

Salnax (on 17 June 2010)

Kingdom Hearts GBA Spinoff Kingdom Hearts 2 DS Spinoff PSP Spinoff Other DS Spinoff 3DS Spinoff Kingdom Hearts 3 And that's the best case scenario... Is KH3 going to even be a 7th gen game at this point?
