God of War III Sales Pass One Million Units Worldwide - News

Following on from the massive success of Final Fantasy XIII last week which managed to sell over one million copies on PS3 and on the back of some very strong reviews (a 9.4 from VGChartz), God of War III set a similar sales benchmark for the week ending 20th March 2010 with just over 1.1 million units sold worldwide. In terms of regional breakdown around 700,000 units were sold in the Americas and 400,000 in Europe and Other Regions (excluding Japan).
The God of War series has now sold over 11.5 million units worldwide and while a 1.1m week one is impressive and nearly 400,000 units higher than God of War II managed back in 2007, God of War III has a long way to go to beat the first two games:

PS2...120m user base, GOW2 sales 3.34 million.. User base doesn't matter. Profit matters. GOW3 will do aswell as the other games in the series, probably better eventually.
Some of you guys sound like a haters. Even in the music industry, let an artist sell 1 million units in week one. That artist will be #1 on the Billboard Charts. A million is a million no matter what region you start out in. PS3 is the new install base train coming through and some of you are standing on the tracks.

Awesome sales, BTW. Should be between 4 and 5 million LTD. Similar to what Uncharted 1 and 2 will also be.

@moneymaker yah, I didn't believe it either until I made a trip to a local walmart. Lots of 360's no PS3's or Wii's.
Can't wait to add my copy to the GOW3 count in a week or two

When I bought the game at Walmart yesterday, I was expecting a big dissapointment, Luckily thou I saw like 8- 10 copies still there

I was at my local Target, and Best Buy today, and just decided to see for myself if the rumors were true. Sure enough, neither store had a single PS3 in stock, it's absurd, I know, but I believe the legs for GOW 3 will be strong based on supply shortages alone, as stores start to replenish their stock, people will pick this game up!!
Nice start for GoW III. Did anyone expect otherwise? This is the ultimate PS core gamer's franchise as far as I'm concerned. There is no bigger core gamer's franchise for Sony. (I consider GT a casual gamer's franchise).

GOW and GOWII didn't sell 4 and 3.34 mill, they sold 4.79 and 4.03 Mill. And when the GOW collection is released in EU they would have sold even more respectively.
I'd bet a lot of money that from the time the first GOW came out there was but maybe 1 or 2 other PS2 games that sold as much as the PS2 versions of GOW I & II. It is a big seller. It's just never been released in the prime of a console's lifespan.
Ill wait for numbers from Sony, dont think only 400k have been sold in "Others"

it's exactly because it's a proven franchise that the numbers will be more frontloaded
Uncharted 1 sold a lot because of legs.
Uncharted 2 sold a lot right away because it now had a history.
GoW3 already has a history and was hyped by sony for a while, plus it had the GoW collection precede it's release (nothing better to hype a game than the game itself)
Hey i'm all for GoW to sell a lot, I prefer this series to many that sell more, but i'm not convinced the general crowd will agree.

Fixed past sales numbers
I checked a week ago, god of war sales and they were like this:
GOd of War I= 2.96M
GOd Of War II= 2.48M
And today, we see them like this
God Of War I =4.00M
God OF War II=3.34M
Then one of this is true:
1)God Of War I for the ps2, sold 1.04M in the last wekeend, faster than God of War III for the ps3 during the last week.
2)VGChartz inflated the sales numbers during the weekend.

Not a huge seller? Man you crazy. Look at those millions. Not many hack and slash games can do those sales except DMC. It's the best hack and slash out there. It may not have the fanbase like FPS but any developer would love those type of sales for they hack and slash game. So far ever game that sold over 1m in the 1st week on the PS3 have sold over 3m life time.

nice nice... but the real test is not week one... it's the long run.
A lot of people here seem to forget that the series is not a huge seller...if the game did 4 and 3.3 on 125M userbase, even a 2.5M would be a great result on the PS3 userbase... (heck I'm one of those who bought all GoW and I don't have a PS3.... i doubt i'm the only one).

These big games should keep people buying PS3's for a long time.
GOW3 didn't get 1.1 in it's first week, it got 1.1 million sales in 5 dats. It was launched on the 16th and the data VGChartz has is till march 20. I expect week one to be 1.2 million.
@haxxiy - It will have to do four times week one sales to beat GOWI. Lots of games don't manage that.
@jbrist - I'm sure they'll count the Trilogy as a separate 'game'.
@GodOfWar_3ever - MGS4 is higher, obviously, and you could say that FFXIII (Japan) counts as well as it was only on PS3 at the time.
Amazing, I have a feeling this will be the best sales for a God of War game of all time when it's all said and done.
I think it will have very good legs. Alot of people including me, did not buy it yet because they want to finish FFXIII first. :D

Oh, surely it will surpass the predecessors. Even Killzone 2 with it's crappy legs managed to triple first week.

Damn they're good sales, definitely bet my expectations, AND to make it better, it sold this much, with EU getting it on a Friday, which means it hasn't had a whole first week, meaning it could've even done an extra 100k there.
To be fair, the games haven't sold too bad in Others, I always thought it would be more on the US side, which it is, but I mean MORE in a ratio, seems like the franchise has done pretty well overall though, let's hope this can match the first!
