2010 Year on Year Sales and Market Share Update to March 13th

by Brent Williams, posted on 20 March 2010 / 4,629 Views

Here we see data representing the global sales through to consumers, and change in sales performance, of the three home consoles over comparable periods for 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.  Also shown is the market share for each of the consoles over the same periods.

yoy 13.03.10

The Wii is back to being down year on year this week by about 15%.  It is marginally down year on year - year to date and this looks likely to continue amid the reported shortages of supply in the US.  Supply is expected to return to normal levels in the coming weeks so we shall see how much supply has affected performance.

The PS3 is still performing well and is still healthily up against 2009 year on year - year to date by 35%.  The discrete year on year increase for this week is up yet again by 30%.  It is harder to judge the real perfortmance this week as we have the Final Fantasy boost, but we also have the Killzone 2 effect of 2009.  It appears that the PS3 will be steady at around 30% up though for some time to come yet and this is again in a period of evident shortages in the US.  Once again it is difficult to quantify the effect of the shortages.

The 360 is down this week by just 3% in comparison to 2009.  It is likely that the 360 also received a slight boost due to Final Fantasy, but it does seem that the 360 is improving week by week against 2009.  As I have said previously, this was inevitable given that the effect of the price cut of 2008 was by now beginning to slow in 2009 sales numbers.  The drop year on year - year to date has reduced to just under 9%.

In 2011, the PS3 will outsell the Wii.

Baalzamon (on 21 March 2010)

@abcdario: well, if barely knowing what to do with the Move means over 500 games lined up for it and a very cheap release price, then you are 100% correct

abcdario (on 21 March 2010)

You are trying too hard with this "The Wii is dead" thread, i think SONY and MS are in the worse position right now, the Wii has got lots of killer games, but SONY and MS barely know what to do with their PS Move and their Natal stuff. Unless they come with something really great, they will be sailing in the red seas water from Nintendo.

Cueil (on 21 March 2010)

@Xylon Lionheart the 360 Arcade comes with 512megs of build in memory

Xylon Lionheart (on 21 March 2010)

@sniper936 Because, you know, anybody who dares wants to play a Mario, Metroid, or Zelda game are complete idiots with no taste in games, not to mention the Wii's lower price point. Yeah, the 360 arcade is cheaper, but you'll wind up having to buy something for memory anyway, and with Natal, even if it sells at around 30 dollars at minimum, that's still about the same price as Nintendo. What Sony and Microsoft need to do with this new technology is get a killer app or maybe even two for their new peripherals, otherwise they will be neat for a few months but die away shortly afterward. However even if the Move and Natal do survive in this market, I don't think they will be Wii killers even though they are superior products.

sniper936 (on 21 March 2010)

@Michelasso i completely agree with u. The only, and i mean ONLY aspect the wii has that benefits them over the PS3 and 360 is the motion controller, and when Sony and MS release the Move and Natal, which are both better than the wii remote, at that point anyone who buys the wii clearly has some brain defects, which is really as nice as i could put it.

gustave154 (on 21 March 2010)

@ nintendogamer nah SMG , Metroid and Zelda will be a massive hit. and your first sentence made me LOL

Nintendogamer (on 20 March 2010)

You're forgetting that the Wii has the vitality sensor which will be huge and games like Wii relax or a lie detector game will be a massive hit. they also have Zelda coming up and most likely a few more hit titles coming for Xmas.

Michelasso (on 20 March 2010)

When the PS Move and Project Natal will be available the Wii will be R.I.P. Also the Wii should be compared with the PS2. For sure it's not really a "next gen" console. It made it's fortune with the Wiimote. Otherwise nothing would explain why a stupid game like Wii Sport is so popular.

Tridrakious (on 20 March 2010)

I'm with Tailgunner. I don't understand it, but the tides have been shifted in favor of the PS360.

"Beuli2 says: "Baalzamon says: @Beuli2: Well, if you look closely, there is a pretty substantial change. In 2007, 2008, and 2009, the HD consoles were having huge difficulties just keeping up with the Wii itself. This year, their combined sales are almost 10% higher than the Wii's sales, which is a complete turnaround." I know this. But you can add that the Wii hasn't received a single big game since November, with NSMB Wii and Just Dance (big hit in Europe), while PS360 have received like 5 or six big games in the last 6 weeks. It doesn't take a genius to note that they're going up." Why do people love the Wii if it's them one (two in Europe) games since November! Why not go for a system that had five or six big games in the same period. I don't get it.

arsenicazure (on 20 March 2010)

I have a feeling the wii is gonna settle in at around 42-45% market share by the time the current gen is over. Ps3/gow3/FF13/GT5/move and with the 360slim/halo/natal arnd the corner.. the wii has its work cut out for itself...

M.U.G.E.N (on 20 March 2010)

Ps3 is kicking some major butt EVEN with a major shortage....

bannedagain (on 20 March 2010)

natal will change the course with yet another price cut on the way. plus i see microsoft pushing out the arcade and putting a harddrive or some sort of memory included. this will stop the not enough space debate.

dirkd2323 (on 20 March 2010)

PS3 is on FIRE !!

ethomaz (on 20 March 2010)

GoW3 + Yakuz 4 = 300k PS3.

Kilzoned82 (on 20 March 2010)

PS3 big improver in YOY sales- 36% increase upon 2009 sales. 360 and Wii are both down on last year's sales.

postofficebuddy (on 20 March 2010)

@Papflesje Under normal circumstances with GOW3 alone I don't think 300k would be possible but Japan will see a rather substantial boost this week, possibly 50k+, because of Yakuza 4 and Torne. And if Sony managed to get at at least a somewhat decent shipment for the GOW3 launch to the states than we could see a substantial enough boost to hit 300k.

weaveworld (on 20 March 2010)

Nice job you did there! Very interesting read.

Nintendogamer (on 20 March 2010)

Wii should be gettign a bit of boosts with MHtri, SMG2, MOM ( japan will like this one).

Beuli2 (on 20 March 2010)

@ baalzamon: GOW3 will probably increase sales, but 80k up? That's huge and with shortages reported anyway, seems a tad overboard.

PS3 will probably sell at least 300k next week due to God of War 3, maybe 310-320k. Gains of 125-150k on the 360 next week alone.

Baalzamon (on 20 March 2010)

PS3 has already caught up 630k, when it had actually lost ground at this point last year, and it still managed up 2.2 million units last year. Depending on what Halo: Reach does, the PS3 may very well catch up to the 360 by 3 million units this year alone, putting them at just over 3 million apart. Seems possible at this rate the PS3 will pass the 360 in early 2012, despite the fact it has had 1 less year of sales. Sweet.

darthdevidem01 (on 20 March 2010)

nice article again FF boost has helped!

prime (on 20 March 2010)

Wii = Juggernaught

postofficebuddy (on 20 March 2010)

I too am curious to see how these shortages will effect longterm sales. But next week we'll probably see the PS3 massively up YOY.

Nintendogamer (on 20 March 2010)

We should see Wii gitting 69 million Next week.

Beuli2 (on 20 March 2010)

Despite of all the "doom" of the Nintendo Wii, it still only with 57 thousands less than 2009. Good job for a doomed console.

Euphoria14 (on 20 March 2010)

Incredibly informative as always and once again a great read. Excellent work Kowenicki.
