2009 Year on Year Sales and Market Share Update to Nov 7th

by Brent Williams, posted on 13 November 2009 / 7,629 Views

Here we see data representing the global sales through to consumers, and change in sales performance, of the three home consoles over comparable periods for 2007, 2008 and 2009.  Also shown is the market share for each of the consoles over the same periods.

yoy 07.11.09

As expected last week the sales of all three home consoles increased this week.  The Wii is up 20%, the PS3 up 10% and the 360 up 58%  The impressive increase in 360 sales is down to a large boost in the US which follows a number of retail promotions, it will be interesting to see how the 360 sales figures hold up in the US once those promotions finish.

The PS3 continues to push on and again this week is up considerably on the disappointing 2008 figure by an impressive 41%.  The year on year - year to date increase is now nearing 8% and the PS3 should enjoy its best holiday sales by some distance this year.

The Wii continues its 2009 trend of being down on the 2008 figure, this week it is down around 15% based on the corresponding week last year and over 20% in the year on year - year to date totals.

The 360 undersells the corresponding 2008 week sales by around 8% but still it manages to show an improvement in 2009 over 2008 totals for the year to date.

Next week will be very interesting as in 2008 we saw the Wii really start to take off with 647k sales, the 360 managed 307k and the PS3 posted 215k.  Will the Wii get anywhere near that next week?  How close can the 360 get and by how much will the PS3 beat the 2008 number?  We shall see.

2008 was a magical year for Wii, I would had been really surprised with other year like that =p However, I expect great sales next month. Lets go NSMB =D PS3>360 this and next years. However (in sales) 360 is gonna defeat ps3 at the end of the generation (or at less that s what I think)

randoflexx (on 15 November 2009)

Wii been out how long? Wow why do people expect the Wii to still have unstoppable numbers after 3 years of being released? Will still beating out ps3 and 360 combined.

DeadpoolBub (on 15 November 2009)

Man, the Wii is dropping. Though, New Super Mario Bros should give it a little increase.

ioi (on 15 November 2009)

@bat-ON There will not be any adjustments.

GameAnalyser (on 15 November 2009)

And definitely Wii shud have been categorised under some other group leaving no competitors for it for the nature of its console capability and games. And then it's still winning the gen all alone.

GameAnalyser (on 15 November 2009)

@n-Freak The Wii just dominated on casual gaming market...that's it. So there is a difference in saying that Wii has won the generation, not exactly.

gurglesletch (on 14 November 2009)

wow the wii is really hurting.

kowenicki (on 14 November 2009)

@haxxiy http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=5786 its monthly.

haxxiy (on 14 November 2009)

Where are Kowenicki graphs? :o

Tridrakious (on 14 November 2009)

PS3 making up a huge amount of ground and chipping away at the Wii market share. I also agree that this gen is a much closer fought war than the last. Where the PS2 did destroy the competition so much that the 360 launched earlier than it should have. IMO.

ps3_jrpg_gamer (on 14 November 2009)

360 won 't show a year over year increase wii won 't show a year over year that 's for sure ps3 will sell much more than last year

r3av3r2k1 (on 14 November 2009)

@nfreak its not like the 3 consoles are competing over the same demographic if you believe in something like this you clearly don't understand anything about marketing wii is aimed at a more casual more family oriented demographic and the huge nintendo fanbase of olded gamers, thats why all the big hits are nintendo properties and family oriented games and 360 and ps3 at the more tech savvy user, and solitary player (at home ) that likes to play online and more action packed cinematic games thats the reason big blockbuster shooters are the major hits on these consoles The only console so far that managed to break all conventions so far was the ps2 that had major hits on all genres be it hardcore games or casual family oriented games Thats why to some extent the guy was right, they are not competing over the same customers, of course this is not like black and white, some people fall to more than one category and buy all consoles like you and me, but most just fall to a specific group and are very difficult to sway to a different category, that is a diferent console

bat-ON (on 14 November 2009)

But the numbers don't take in account the 130k overtracked wii in the US and the 30k overtracked 360. So in fact we have to wait for the adjustment to have a more precise idea of the trend.

NFreak (on 14 November 2009)

@ Baal All consoles are competing with each other whether you'd like to admit it or not. Software sells consoles, and developers decide which console to make a game for. When a developer chooses to make a game for the Wii instead of the PS3 or 360, that is going to have an effect on the other two consoles' sales. If you don't believe that to be true then you shouldn't be posting on a sales forum, as you are very uninformed. Either that or you are such a profound fanboy that you simply cannot accept the fact that the PS3 went from 70% market share to 22%, while the Wii has grown from about 15% to almost 50%. According to your post, all three consoles have AMAZING sales. Oh yeah, the PS3 is surely kicking some ass this gen. (sarcasm)

NFreak (on 14 November 2009)

@ Baal Eh? You dislike people who say the Wii has won this generation? You must be a complete fanboy if you really are trying to convince others that the Wii is losing this gen. Haha. Anyways, your entire post was complete BS. "ps3 and 360 also have amazing sales for their genre" Oh yeah? Do the PS3 and 360 have AMAZING sales? Last I checked the combined sales of the two can barely beat the Wii alone (a system that's dirt-cheap to produce). The PS3 is targeting the same audience it always has, and so is the 360. The 360 has made improvements since the last gen, while the PS3 has utterly failed (thus far). You fail with that comment. Oh, and I'm not a biased Nintendo fan. I have a Wii and a PS3. My original PS3 broke and I ended up buying a PS3 Slim, too. I like Sony, but please do not spew bullshit like this anymore... I mean seriously... "ps3 and 360 also have amazing sales for their genre." <-- I laugh every time. You seriously must be like fifteen or something. Whether you like it or not, all three consoles are competing with each other. Get a job. I hate you.

Baalzamon (on 13 November 2009)

I don't like people that say the Wii has won "this generation" of gaming consoles. You have the Wii and you have the HD consoles...they are two utterly and completely different things. They are all considered to be part of "this generation," but they target completely different audiences. Wii has amazing sales, nobody should say it is doing bad (because it isn't)...ps3 and 360 also have amazing sales for their genre.

TheThunder (on 13 November 2009)

Great charts as always kowenicki. As for the YoY YtD I expect PS3 over 360 over (or at the worst case level out) Wii under Should be a fun Holiday season.

kowenicki (on 13 November 2009)

i wouldnt call it a distant second or third place either.... this is a lot closer than last gen.

moondeep (on 13 November 2009)

47% is pretty darned impressive, considering folks like dolemit3 consider it a kids system :) When will the fanboys wake up and realize that Nintendo won this generation. The HD systems are fighting for a distant second place finish now. Of course the current console cycle only has 2 years left, tops.

CChaos (on 13 November 2009)

Yeah, I wouldn't exactly say it was getting destroyed... Honestly, let's see the PS3 catch the Wii before the next generation of consoles comes out. Since not even the most fanatical of PS3 fanboy can claim that, I'd say destroyed in market share isn't really accurate.

kowenicki (on 13 November 2009)

destroyed??? not a word I'd use... but yeah it is down quite a bit this year and will likely never reach the magical 50% install base.

Wii_Master (on 13 November 2009)

what are you talking abt..Wii has 47.5% Marketshare..thats almoast 50%...just cause it is off by 3% doesn't mean its getting owned but whatver...

dolemit3 (on 13 November 2009)

Poor Wii getting destroyed market share wise.
