Weekly Analysis - Uncharted 2 sells 830,000 as Wii tops DS

Brett Walton
22nd October 2009

The big game this week was undoubtedly Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. After posting some of the strongest reviews of the year (9.2 on VGChartz) a lot was expected of the title and it did not disappoint. With week one sales of over 830,000 units it becomes the 5th fastest-selling PS3 title to date, after Grand Theft Auto IV, Metal Gear Solid 4, Resident Evil 5 (which had a far stronger start in Japan) and FIFA 10 (estimating 90,000 sales for the Americas and Japanese launches as well as the 795,000 launch in Europe and other regions).

Moving on to hardware, all formats saw small decreases this week with the exception of Wii and PS3. PS3 hardware was up 19% on the release of Uncharted 2 while Wii saw a 4% increase as the effect of the price cut and start of the holiday season begins to kick in. Expect hardware sales to level off and begin to slowly rise over the next 5 weeks before things really start to get interesting as the holiday boosts begin to be felt.

Year-on-year trends are really starting to look far more healthy than a couple of months ago, the various price cuts and new model launches have helped to offset the declines we have been seeing earlier in the year. That said, while DS and Wii are only down a little on 2008, PS3 is actually the only format to see an increase over 2008 levels this week. With a stronger holiday lineup in 2009 vs 2008, I certainly expect Wii and DS to get close to their holiday sales last year, PS3 to be up around 30% and Xbox360 down about 20%. PSP and PS2 are really beginning to slow down now – PSP Go should help to reinvigorate PSP sales in Japan to some extent although as with America and Europe I don’t see it having much of a sustained boost to PSP hardware sales and so I expect both formats to be down over 40% over the holidays.

Brutal Legend sold over 200,000 units this week (PS3 and Xbox360) – solid sales but slightly below expectations, while Mario & Sonic at the Winter Olympic Games launched well below the level set by 2007’s Summer Games title, but will undoubtedly see strong sales through the holidays and well into 2010. Whether it can exceed the 11.5 million sales of the original title remains to be seen though.

The biggest release next week is PES 2010 in Europe, the 2009 version sold 950,000 across PS2, PS3 and Xbox360 in the first week and although reviews have not been strong for PES 2010 it has a good shot at clearing one million copies in week one. Borderlands, WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 and Bakugan: Battle Brawlers should all see strong starts as well.

As always, the full data will be posted on VGChartz in the next few hours so be sure to check the charts out:

@ \/ & \/\/, it sad/sickening people like you guys who don't buy quality and instead buys overhype/crappy games, hence why we rarely see masterpiece games every generation. So sad. *sigh*

mightyERone (on 24 October 2009)

I hope UC2 gets game of the year for PS3 but not overall. Its a shame that its the PS3 only exclusive ( Ah Hell) only decent game out for the system from Sony this year. Even scarier is the Nintendos' Wii outselling PS3 with those Exclusives, Dam!!

arminuk (on 24 October 2009)

nobody ever like truth about anything i dont care what people say about my comments but i still gonna say uncharted 2 isnt AAA game and i'm not other console fan or i never been in amazon website even if i was my user name would be the same

huaxiong90 (on 24 October 2009)

arminuk does this in many news comments.

Makaha (on 24 October 2009)

@arminuk I know you are the same guy on Amazon, going under the alias Omar Muhkteh or something, who gave Uncharted 2 one star, and then said people should play Halo ODST instead. And then you find out it's his only review on Amazon, so you know he's just a 360 troll or someone who just wants attention

legendarysaiyanbroly (on 23 October 2009)

That guy arminuk doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about!

Notorius.A.i.G (on 23 October 2009)

Only 2 days out in Europe, and it manages 350 k... Damn this game is beast.

Shonen (on 23 October 2009)

As i suspected , its Wii all over again.... What i wanna know now is ...will the PS3 keep itself above the 360 ? Stay tune ^^

Kingdestroyer5 (on 23 October 2009)

I agree with hduser

Kingdestroyer5 (on 23 October 2009)

Cool

hduser (on 23 October 2009)

@arminuk - while you're certainly entitled to your opinion but you're definitely in the minority. UC2 is really more than just a game. It's a FPS, platformer, a light puzzle solving and a movie all rolled into one. The other thing that's good about it is the writing, storytelling, and great execution/polished game. While it's not without its faults (enemy AI, simple puzzles), I don't think other games in the past has come close to what UC2 has done as an overall experience.

crak-a-lak (on 23 October 2009)

arminuk you are a mentally challenged. The gameplay is epic in UC2. It's a fun game. If you dont think it's fun then you are definitely in the minority. In other words your opinion doesn't mean SH!T.

arminuk (on 23 October 2009)

i really dont see anything special about uncharted 2! ok that game got good graphic but gaming its not all about graphics its about gameplay aswell. i played the first one and only think i liked about it it was graphics and gameplay was really bad. i went to blockbuster 2day i rented second one after 20 mins playing it was waste of money and i send it back good for sony and sony fans this game selling good but not as good as other games!

aragod (on 23 October 2009)

@ioi Okay than, that explains it. Thanks

Wandamaximoff (on 23 October 2009)

I thought i would be bigger than no 5......... EKK its worth the no 1 spot!!!!

Munkeh111 (on 23 October 2009)

I didn't really expect that boost from Uncharted 2, but good start. Although lower than what we expecting last week, about double what I was expecting a few months ago. Hopefully it will continue to sell well through the holidays, 3m must be the target now. I am fairly sure it won't do a Killzone 2 and only creep slowly to 2m

milkyjoe (on 23 October 2009)

"That's probably the funniest and most misinformed post in here. But, whatever helps you close your eyes at night..." I'm glad you found it funny, that's what I was going for, it was meant as a sarcastic take on trolls. I hope you got that and that it didn't go way over your head.

ioi (on 23 October 2009)

@aragod 95% of games come out in Europe on a Friday just like 95% of games come out in Japan on Thursday and 95% of games in America on a Tuesday - all other games in the list are calculated in exactly the same way.

gtcarro (on 23 October 2009)

Uncharted 2 is the best game I ever played. It's a Master Piece. Uncharted 2 = GOTY 2009 Last 7 weeks sales: 360:......999,114 PS3:..2.006.726 This is a HUUUGE difference.

Hardcoregamer1989 (on 23 October 2009)

woohoo go wii... and uncharted is doing awesome at retail im planning on picking that game up soon, i love platformers

Marco (on 23 October 2009)

Very good for Uncharted 2 + PS3

aragod (on 23 October 2009)

Is this really the first week of Sales? Europe got Uncharted 2 on 16th, that leaves us 2 days, since when are TWO days a week? It would be more reasonable to count first week of sales in all regions, than count that up. I'm positive U2 will have over milion than.

oni-link (on 23 October 2009)

Great sales for U2 for Sony, tremendous sales for ODST for Microsoft and Nintendo has a potential game to trump the sales of both AAA games offered by their competitors. To me Nintendo's star release wasn't WSR or WiiFit-2 (though both will outsell U2 and ODST) but NSMW is their real AAA title that the Wii was looking for!!! It seems to have the potential to be the Wii's equivalent of Brawl for GCN!

oni-link (on 23 October 2009)

Great sales for all systems and good for the industry!!! The Wii has taken over once again and hopefully and thanks to the PS3 price cut Nintendo will try to stay competitive by continuing to deliver great games not shovelware like Wii-Music. NSMW is a great step can't wait!!!

tio_coyote (on 23 October 2009)

Cant wait to see how New SUper Mario Wii affects wii's hardware sales. This one is defitively a hardware seller.

hitsu (on 23 October 2009)

yihaaaa...u go ps3 !!!! :D

demon123 (on 23 October 2009)

Well done ps3 owners. Do not buy one of the best games of all time uc2 and instead buy fifa. Developers will realise that we ps3 owners do not buy exclusives and will switch to other consoles that are more loyal to brilliant exclusives. Then you will start crying about not having any exclusives as you did before.

ChrisIsNotSexy (on 23 October 2009)

ahhh release date for Europe probably ruined Uncharted 2's chances to get 1 million first week :( Oh well this is actually a little above my predictions(600k-800k first) Anyway guys...expect 2nd week to be 200k-400k So it will reach 1 million in a matter of days anyway ^^

XanderZane (on 23 October 2009)

Good sales for UC2. I wasn't expecting it to hit 1 million it's first week. It has definitely done better then the original UC. PS3 sales got a decent sales increase due to UC2 and probably Demon's Soul. XBox 360 might see a slight increase next week as Forza 3 gets released. M# needs to get their bundles ready. Wii & DS is still dominating the market however. Both system may pass the PS2 in sales before this generation is over.

ph4nt (on 23 October 2009)

@Boutros, as long as it's reasonable and has no foul language, I don't see why you couldn't. Anyway, surprising to see Wii above DS.

Boutros (on 22 October 2009)

I would have a little comment to make about the way this article was written but I don't know if it will be welcome :S It's not an insult or anything like that, it's more like a criticism (a good one I think) Should I say it? ...

postofficebuddy (on 22 October 2009)

While I was hoping for a million for Uncharted 2 830K is just fine, especially with just 2 days in Europe. If it has legs I can definitely see it hitting 2 million by new years. I can't believe it gave PS3 a 40K boost. Great job Sony and Naughty Dog. You've crafted a masterpiece. Wii is definitely picking up steam leading into the holidays, although I'm having my doubts about it having as good of a holiday as it did last year. I can hardly wait to see how things play out in the coming weeks.

ckmlb (on 22 October 2009)

200k week one is hopefully lower than what the final numbers turn out to be or on the month it reaches a million or something. Uncharted 2 might reach 1.2 million worldwide for the month add holiday sales and bundles giving this game a shot at outselling mgs 4 worldwide lifetime As long as Sony advertises it throughout the holiday a lot of people buying PS3s will get this game. They probably will keep advertising it strongly as this is their strongest holiday game this year and probably the best selling 1st party game in the future.

Cowboys4u86 (on 22 October 2009)

NA seem to have bigger week 1 sales, but EU seems to keep it's sales consistently higher for games like this. I can see EU's numbers declining much slower than NA's as far as this game goes. It also kind of sucks that Fifa is still pretty new so a lot of people are going for that. Still 830k week 1 is incredible, especially when you compare it to U:DF's 1st week of 160k.

huaxiong90 (on 22 October 2009)

@darth: LOL, same here.

darthdevidem01 (on 22 October 2009)

some of the comments here make me bang my head against the wall

GranTurismoHelperMax (on 22 October 2009)

What? DS not on top? Comon, this thing is like hotcakes compared to the wii. I guess every1 is anticipating the wii fit plus launch with an extra mario bros coming soon. As for the DS, I expect it to take the top spot next week, if not, ill be surprised. PS3 2:1'd the 360. I guess its dieing in europe and either every1 is waiting for MW2 bundle in america or forza 3, but its not impressive sales leading up to the 2 games. the ps3 and uncharted 2 really did boost hw sales, congrats to uncharted 2 for a stellar debut. It defnitly improved over the 1st game and so did the sales, it should reach 2 million by the end of the year. And for mario and sonic, im really dissapointed that the hype isnt there from the last game. Good ideas but didnt implement in very well. I guess summer olympics > winter olympics.

leo-j (on 22 October 2009)

@cgi she hasn't changed, I was hoping she would be more neutral.

TooPawned (on 22 October 2009)

i wonder how DS did second week.

CGI-Quality (on 22 October 2009)

@ milkyjoe That's probably the funniest and most misinformed post in here. But, whatever helps you close your eyes at night...

heruamon (on 22 October 2009)

WOW...what happened to UC2...I thought it was going to hit a million...after the strong NA opening...oh well...I DID hit the right number for this weeks Prediction league...I'm rich, Beeotch!

milkyjoe (on 22 October 2009)

So we have the biggest release on the PS3 this year, and it still can't top the Wii. Ouch Sony, ouch.

moondeep (on 22 October 2009)

It's a bit misleading when looking at the PS3 numbers because they had a simply HORRID 2008. They're finally get back to where they belong and providing decent competition to MS for a change. Nintendo continues to do their own thing and kick butt in their own way.

hunter_alien (on 22 October 2009)

Why did Brutal legend underperform? Wasnt EA expecting for this year only a 400k shipment? IMO those are great numbers ;-)

Abracadabra-Caramell (on 22 October 2009)

Im glad to see that the PS3 and the Wii sells best. It is they who have the best games today.

aygie (on 22 October 2009)

PS3 has the only year on year increase, and a big one too. Nice.

CGI-Quality (on 22 October 2009)

@ Coolbeans Then you set your expectations WAY too high. MANY people thought Uncharted 2 wouldn't be a system seller at all. A 19% increase is fantastic for the game! @ Omega Who said PS3 had all the advantages?

coolbeans (on 22 October 2009)

Awesome, my prediction was practically spot-on for U2's first week (Between 800k-850k). Suprised the PS3 didn't move more consoles that week though, was banking U2 would've gone to 300k+ PS3's sold but good to see it was a solid system seller to say the least. @Ail That certainly seems like a solid prediction and you'll probably be right on.

Ail (on 22 October 2009)

PS3 has a serious shot at not going bellow 200k until the start of 2010...

kopstudent89 (on 22 October 2009)

@ Ail umm it's doubled its weekly sales, and even last year's numbers were just crazy, its just within 10% now, which is pretty close i would say

donsterydo2 (on 22 October 2009)

UN2 should be pretty high in EU the second week, probably higher than in US. It'a a weak week for X360 sales :-p I don't think Forza 3 will make big difference here.

kopstudent89 (on 22 October 2009)

so last week's Wii numbers actually saw a rise! guess who's predictions were right :D

Ail (on 22 October 2009)

Wii sales aren't stunning. Even with a price cut it can't match last year sales for the same week...

AnthonyW86 (on 22 October 2009)

irishLAD09 is right, Uncharted 2 was released in europe on the 16th so it's only 2 days of sales for europe. So next week it will probably do another 400k-500k.

Skeeuk (on 22 October 2009)

would have been good 2 see 1st full weekof uc2 from eu, could be near 1 million, but still good 1st week

Dgc1808 (on 22 October 2009)

To be honest... I wish Brutal Legend would sell millions... Just to show developers that an interesting and humors story is something that alot of people want. Sadly that probably won't happen. I love serious games but when that's the only thing that ever get's attention... it can get really boring over time... Oh, and I'm pretty sure I predicted 850K for Uncharted 2. Yay me!

V-r0cK (on 22 October 2009)

Great U2 numbers, I was expecting like 600k max first week. Great increase in PS3 and Wii. Hey the PS2 increased why is the percentage in red??? Go PS2!!!

irishLAD09 (on 22 October 2009)

Great sales for UC2, it was out last friday in europe so when are these numbers from.

bardicverse (on 22 October 2009)

Wii Master - When someone says PS360 sales, they mean PS3+360 combined. Scottie's comment was recognizing that the Wii is near selling what both the HD units combined sold once again.

OmegaRugalv3 (on 22 October 2009)

PS3 does not have all the advantages ... it has a lot of catching up to do. Let's not get carried away here.

Gearbox (on 22 October 2009)

@hduser - i was impressed that i was spot on. i said 250k

hduser (on 22 October 2009)

I was pretty close in my UC2 prediction. I was guessing 20-25% bump in PS3 sales. I was pulling for 280K overall though so it a little disappointing. I didn't think UC2 will hit 1 mill. considering late release in EU. I think it'll have some legs for the next few weeks. It seems more a word of mouth game with some buzz behind it.

Hyruken (on 22 October 2009)

Not as good as expected then. Still it is a very good game and im sure it will do well in lifetime sales. What is interesting is that now all the PS3 games of the year are out while MS still has a few to go. I should of been getting Forza 3 tommorow but thanks to those wonderful postman on strike will not get it until at least monday, cheers guys!

Wii_Master (on 22 October 2009)

@scottie how is wii close to ps360 sales..... dude 360 only sold 135,610 while wii sold 364,441 so wii is way ahead of 360 and nowhere close as for ps3, it sold 252,879 and again wii sold 364,441 and so it is nowhere close unless 111k is a low difference between the two i don't think Wii sold anywhere near its competitors... OT: Wii = Stunning Sales PS3 = Awesome bump by U2 U2 = sorta disappointing in game sales thought it would make atleast 1 million but yeah oph well atleast it gave ps3 19% bump and by the way Wii sold 307K last week so wii had a huge jump than just 4%...more like 25%( i think no calculation done)

youngjuvi (on 22 October 2009)

Just bought a Wii last friday.

BoneArk (on 22 October 2009)

Wii sold over 1 million since price cut. WOW!

CGI-Quality (on 22 October 2009)

otherZinc Hate to break it to you but it's already been determined that Uncharted 2 was responsible for the spike in sales. Living in denial will get you now where... And comparing Uncharted 2 to ODST just proves even further that you don't understand how these sales work.

otherZinc (on 22 October 2009)

360 did get a hit, but it was Halo 3:ODST, sales increased from 190k to 352k over the same time last year. Uncharted 2 sales will die down fast. I predict ODST will outsell U2 for the month of October, if it doesn't it will be close.

otherZinc (on 22 October 2009)

Uncharted had nothing to do with a sales spike, new PS3 Slim hardware had everything to do with a sales spike! What was the game released in Sept to cause the PS3 to jump to 491k, nothing, it was Hardware.

Soriku (on 22 October 2009)

Wii and PS3 still strong!

atma998 (on 22 October 2009)

@ps3_jrpg_gamer sony's year now? No, Sony's month was September 2009. :-p

sully1311 (on 22 October 2009)

ps3_jrpg_gamer: i do, black friday (weekend)

ps3_jrpg_gamer (on 22 October 2009)

in genral 360 price cut didn 't helped i well it is sony 's year now gap between ps3-360 is 117,000 i don 't remember last year 360 outselling ps3 at that size i remember 30,000-40,000 amounts

sully1311 (on 22 October 2009)

kazuyamishima: no it wont be. its like that for every game, expect next week to b around 300-400,000

Snypershawn (on 22 October 2009)

The wii still going strong, I dont think any of the competitors will catch up to it, but the fight for 2nd place is surely on, which Ps3 has all the advantages now.

kazuyamishima (on 22 October 2009)

remember that uncharted 2 was released on others on october 16th so itīs only 2 days for U2 in the chartz, with the next week U2 will be at 1.5 million.

Paperdiego (on 22 October 2009)

seems like uncharted charted after all (pardon the lame pun) (=

Xbbjf9s (on 22 October 2009)

So the only system not to see a good bump in sale from the price cut is the 360?

scottie (on 22 October 2009)

Wii is very close to PS360 in sales again

Simulacrum (on 22 October 2009)

So how much did Mario and Sonic do? Also, liiiitle dissapointng Uncharted 2 sales... Ps3 doing awesome.

psrock (on 22 October 2009)

Last week, the Wii sold 307k, it's still in the front page. Now it sold 360k this week? Uncharted boosted two consoles, huh.

Carl2291 (on 22 October 2009)

Great numbers all round. @ioi, front page says Wii was at 310k last week. Big adjustment?

kitler53 (on 22 October 2009)

darnit, i wish i could edit my previous post. from oct 5th 2008 not 208. and i don't know why i picked that day...err. just ignore me.

loy310 (on 22 October 2009)

Nice job bumping those PS3 hardware figures U2. PS3 is up year over year while everything else is down.... I think U2 did its job.

kitler53 (on 22 October 2009)

ran the numbers. from oct 5th 208 to dec 27 2008 xbox: 5.339M ps3: 3.509M so if the up 30% (ps3) and down 20% (xbox) hold true.... xbox: 4.271M ps3: 4.562M which would bring LTD totals to.... xbox: 36.78M ps3: 29.82M

ph4nt (on 22 October 2009)

Wow, The Wii went up? amazing. Great sales for Uncharted! It's always good to see quality titles selling, regardless of what platform you support.

CGI-Quality (on 22 October 2009)

Interesting....Uncharted 2 did a little lower than my updated prediction, but still caused a system spike in sales, as I also predicted.

huaxiong90 (on 22 October 2009)

AWESOME!

Buzzi (on 22 October 2009)

Wii was not at 350k last week, it was at 310k!! It had more than 4% bump or the number it reached is smaller than 360k?

kitler53 (on 22 October 2009)

i know i shouldn't be but...based off of the early reports i'm kinda disappointed in uncharted2/ps3 performance.

Stefan.De.Machtige (on 22 October 2009)

Go wii! Smack those b***es!

atma998 (on 22 October 2009)

Great to see Wii on top! It seems the Wii will once again have an incredible holiday season.
