VGC Top Ten - Shocking Videogame Plot Twists - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 27 September 2009 / 86,590 Views

Ever since “The Sixth Sense”, quite a few Hollywood and video game directors and writers have embraced the sudden shock of a twist ending to try to make a film or game into a sudden success. The theory goes that if you can get enough people talking about the plot of a property, the word of mouth will carry folks into the store with wallets open and free. While some video game specific plot twists are well done, others come out of the blue and “sandbag” the player with confusion. So whether the protagonist was a ghost the whole time, rosebud was the name of his sled, or Patrick Duffy stepping from the shower means the game didn’t happen, these are our top ten video game plot twists.

According to Wikipedia:

“A plot twist is a change ("twist") in the direction or expected outcome of the plot of a film, television series, video game, novel, comic or other fictional work. It is a common practice in narration used to keep the interest of an audience, usually surprising them with a revelation. Some "twists" are foreshadowed and can thus be predicted by many viewers/readers, whereas others are a complete shock.”

Spoiler alert: as you may have gathered there will be some huge spoilers for some games down below, if you don’t want a game spoiled please skip over that particular entry. And before anyone gets mad, I am not criticizing twists that I feel are bad, but pointing out the plot twists, if said twists are completely unfounded before they happen, I’m going to talk about how it came out of nowhere.

10. Assassin’s creed – (Multi)

Why is it shocking?: The Matrix?

First up we have a twist you discover at the very beginning of the game.  The reason that it is even on the list is because if you are not ready for it, and have preconceived notions about the plot, it can be jarring.  Assassin’s creed takes the “Matrix reveal” and the “It was all just a dream” twist to new levels with a crazy plot twist that reveals that the entire game is in fact a virtual reality simulation. You see, a modern version of the Knights Templar is trying to perceive “genetic memory” of various people to find out about past conflicts. In this case, Altair (Oh wait the real world guy is named Desmond) was being used to create a map to various pieces of treasure called the “Pieces of Eden”. By delving into the past via this VR simulation, a new threat has been created. Desmond suddenly begins to have Altair’s powers and see crazy messages scrawled on walls the…..end credits

Guess we have to wait until the next game to see where this crazy story is going. Truth be told, this shock twist was being promoted as far back as the E3 just prior to the games release. During a promotional trailer people noticed that the footage would sometimes glitch and get static for short moments. While not totally unforeseen, the “matrix reveal” in Assassin’s creed seems out of place and shocking.

9. Super Mario Bros. 2 - (NES)

Why is it shocking?: if you didn’t have the book, you have no idea it was coming.

When Super Mario Bros. 2 hit the west, many were surprised at its sudden differences in game play and just about anything else with the first game. Of course I had no idea at all that the real Super Mario Bros. 2 was insanely hard, and had been vetoed by Nintendo of America in favor of a retooled version of a game called Doki Doki Panic. After fighting through the mysterious world of Subcon (short for subconscious also the name for the guys with wings that Wart captured) the game abruptly ends after you defeat the evil monster Wart, and flashes an ending that shows exactly where you are: Mario’s mushroom fueled fever dream. In the actual instruction book, the plot is spelled out as such, but I bought my copy from a friend in elementary school sans-booklet. Imagine my surprise when the game is revealed to be but a dream in a plumber’s mind.

Here is the actual entry in the instruction manual for the storyline, just in case:

“One evening, Mario had a strange dream. He dreamt of a long, long stairway leading up to a door. As soon as the door opened, he was confronted with a world he had never seen before spreading out as far as his eyes could see. When he strained his ears to listen, he heard a faint voice saying "Welcome to 'Subcon', the land of dreams. We have been cursed by Wart and we are completely under his evil spell. We have been awaiting your arrival. Please defeat Wart and return Subcon to its natural state. The curse Wart has put on you in the real world will not have any effect upon you here. Remember, Wart hates vegetables. Please help us!" At the same time this was heard, a bolt of lightning flashed before Mario's eyes. Stunned, Mario lost his footing and tumbled upside down. He awoke with a start to find himself sitting up in his bed. To clear his head, Mario talked to Luigi, Toad and Princess about the strange dream he had. They decide to go to a nearby mountain for a picnic. After arriving at the picnic area and looking at the scenery, they see a small cave nearby. When thy enter this cave, to their great surprise, there's a stairway leading up, up and up. It is exactly like the one Mario saw in his dream. They all walk together up the stairs and at the top, find a door just like the one is Mario's dream. When Mario and his friends, in fear, open the door, to their surprise, the world that he saw in his dream spreads out before them!....”

8. No More Heroes - (Wii)

Why is it shocking?: Travis is so in the dark he doesn’t see the 65 twists coming.

Poor Travis Touchdown, all he wants in the world is to get enough money to buy anime and cat toys. He gets drug into a moneymaking scheme with the promise of some horizontal mambo from a Ms. Sylvia Christel. Problem is Ms. Christel Is actually a Mrs. Christel, is married to his long lost Irish twin brother Henry. On top of this Sylvia seemingly has a daughter (who also shares a name with both Travis’ former lover and his cat) according to the final scene in the game.

No More heroes actually tries to poke fun at the very idea of plot twists and twist endings by having a variable onslaught of them happen all at the same time. At one point you even have the classic “I am your father plot twist occur” during a battle with Dark Star. This is revealed to then be false, and your former lover/half sister/MMA assassin shows up to kill you. This event brings in one of the best plot twists in the game. The problem is that Jeanne doesn’t want to slow down the games release and make Travis fast forward the dialog. As far as I know, you can’t actually see it in the game. Due to some geeky folks on the internet, this little gem has been slowed down for us to see. Not only does the following video break the fourth wall, but it also makes fun of Duke Nukem Forever.

(the following has some blood and bad language)

castlevania-aria-of-sorrow.jpg picture by spdk1

7. Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow - (GBA)

Why is it shocking?: You are Dracula

For years the plot for just about any Castlevania game follows the follow formula:

1) You are some sort of Vampire Hunter, whether trained or involuntary
2) You are going through a huge castle seeking out the cause of a bunch of bad juju
3) At the end you fight a villain that is usually Dracula

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow flips this premise on its head with a shocking twist. During the game you have the ability to control monsters to do your bidding, innocent enough right? Little do you know that Soma is in fact building up his powers because his powers and Dracula's soul are one and the same -- Soma is the next incarnation of Dracula himself, and therefore may inherit Castlevania as its new lord and master.
This twist albeit somewhat simple was a HUGE success and was lauded as one of the better plot twists that had come along in a while.

256px-BatenKaitosCover.jpg picture by spdk1

6. Baten Kaitos – (GC)

Why is it shocking?: You play as the villain, then quest for his redemption.

Baten Kaitos should win an award for the biggest WTF moment in an RPG ever. While not the top of this particular list, I’d say that you will agree that this twist is pretty messed up. When you first see the games protagonist Kalas he is asleep in a hospital bed trying to remember who he is and why he has such a strong sense of revenge. He meets with a bunch of people including a young girl named Xelha, and he agrees to help her on her quest to stop the empire.

Towards the beginning of the second disk, you begin to get a sense of a false ending beginning to happen until Kalas suddenly starts breaking the fourth wall quite a bit. Turns out Kalas was a villain all along, and it is now up to Xelha to stop him and return him to his former disposition. This made you feel somewhat hopeless as the player as it is made clear that you are not playing the game as Kalas but as a guardian spirit that watches over the party. This is the reason for all of the fourth-wall instances.

5. Bioshock – (Multi)

Why is it shocking?: “would you kindly” keep reading to find out.

In a similar but far more complex vein as Baten Kaitos, Bioshock removes your perceived control over the games protagonist to create a sense of hopelessness in the player. Towards the beginning of the game you meet up with a man name Atlas that seems to be acting in your best regard in order to help. Atlas has an odd way of talking highlighted by his use of the phrase “would you kindly”. Pretty soon it is revealed that Atlas is actually controlling Jack with the phrase as he has been programmed to do whatever someone says if they precede it with the phrase “would you kindly”. Suddenly any illusion of freewill that the gamer has through Jack is tossed back at you and the player feels helpless. The phrase is so powerful that you are actually told to commit suicide at one point, but you successfully have the trigger removed before it could take effect.

This plot twist seems to be a reaction to many games use of a duality system, such as Mass Effect, where you guide the storyline along making choices. In Bioshock you have the ability to seemingly do this with how you react to the presence of the “little sisters”, but that was all a plan by Atlas. By letting you have a few choices here and there, you’d never know that you were a slave. Now would you kindly read entry number four?

star-wars-kotor-cover.jpg picture by spdk1

4. Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic – (XBX)

Why is it shocking?: You are the bad guy all along.

Much like the twist in Aria of Sorrow, KOTOR has a real doosey of a plot twist. You find out that your seemingly player generated character was a false set of memories placed into the mind of an amnesiac Darth Revan. Darth Revan was the master of Darth Malak, and was betrayed by his student. It was revealed that Malak wished for all of the power that you had once helped him attain including a fleet of Sith warships, that he tried to kill Malak and other officials to cover his tracks. Problem was that the force kept Revan alive just so he could seek revenge. Depending on choices you make during the progression of the narrative, Revan either regains his throne as the master of the Sith, or fights for the light (in canon he was a good guy).

The reason that this twist is so shocking isn’t really the fact that you are essentially one of the” badguys” in the game, but the fact that you were brain-wiped and left with fake memories by the lightside. Due to this little gem of a plot device, your decision to go to either side later in the game is made easier rather than saying “well, I guess I feel like being an evil man/woman today!”

Metal_Gear_Solid_2_Sons_Of_Liberty.jpg picture by spdk1

3. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (multi)

Why is it shocking?: “They’ve been dead for how long?”

For our own number 3 spot on the list, I look towards a great game that also has one of the weirdest, most convoluted plot twists in any game. While the game runs pretty smoothly the majority of the time, you really begin to wonder if everything is right about the plot just about the point where Snake shows up and declares that he’ll be okay because of his infinite ammo bandana. This is of course referring to a special item that you unlocked after beating the original Metal Gear Solid game, but one never dreams of such items actually becoming a part of the storyline. This only adds to the weird storyline that contains a bucketful of endless self-referential talk about "simulation", "role-playing", that begins to make you feel as if you are logged into a VR program, rather than a real situation.

This is only confounded by the fact that the Colonel begins to “glitch out” and tell you to “mow the lawn” or “turn the game off”. Finally you begin to understand that this Colonel Campbell is not the real deal, and some sort of A.I. Construct made to confuse you. Many left this storyline not sure if Raiden really existed, or if the whole thing was a VR mission. It was finally revealed in the fourth game that all events did transpire, making the whole thing even more confusing. But wait, “what was the twist?”, you may be saying. The entire time you are trying to find out who the “Sons of Liberty” are. Finally at the end of the game that information is delivered via a data diskette. Next thing you know Raiden finds out that not only are all twelve members of the Sons of Liberty Wisemen's Committee dead, but have been dead for approximately 100 years, oh and Big Boss is still alive.

starocean.jpg picture by spdk1

2. Star Ocean 3 – (PS2)

Why is it shocking?: The Matrix? AGAIN!?

These weird sub-reality situations are not just limited to games created by Hideo Kojima, as a game by Tri-Ace is one of the largest perpetrators of this type of Duex Ex Machina ending. Towards the end of the game you literally realize that this entire time you have been a construct in a virtual world dubbed the "Eternal Sphere". Those bad guys you’ve been fighting were rogue anti-viruses, and a madman is now trying to wipe out all of your past existence by deleting all of the data. The Tron-like story line then takes a leap for Matrix territory, by tossing in some confusing almost religious mumbo jumbo about how even though you are presumed to be some sort of computer programs, the party has transcended the confines of the games and has become real.

WHAT!?

FinalFantasyVIIIDisc1of4U-front.jpg picture by spdk1

1. Final Fantasy VIII - (PS)

Why is it shocking?: "hey guess what we all lived in the same orphanage!"

Final Fantasy VIII had a major pacing problem when it came to character back stories. This was partly due to problems when the game was being developed that hacked huge portions of the storylines out, but it was really evident in the middle of the game when revelations begin to happen at a mysterious orphanage. Throughout the game it is mentioned that Guardian Forces (summoned monsters) sometimes cause memory loss; this should have been a red flag that some absurd “Dues ex Machina” plotline would soon surface, but this seemingly needless information (a.k.a fluff) was so low-key that many may have missed the buildup. In fact never mind that I said “throughout the game” as it is only mentioned in four occasions that I can remember:

1- The guy besides Cid who ask you ''not to listen to anti-GF propaganda'' about memory loss.
2- Selphie's diary when you get your first mission says that she is worried about losing her memories.
3- The study panel says ''memory loss is a possible side effect of GFs, but hasn't been proven yet''.
4- Squall can't remember the 4th person who passed the SeeD test with him, despite that just happening.

Suddenly it is made clear that ALL of the main characters where orphans at the very same orphanage many years prior to the game, but almost everyone forgot about this due to their exposure to the Guardian Forces. To sweeten the deal it is then revealed that Edea, the “evil” sorceress that you have been fighting was the owner of said orphanage, and a mother figure to you. The whole time the "GF's made everyone forget the truth” explanation just sits there and is made even more silly when characters like Irvine reveal that they recognized Squall, but never spoke up about it, or that he realized who Edea was, refused to shoot her, and then did not reveal why.

The real problem with this plot twist is not the twist at all, but the execution. You are never really prepared for it, and none of the evidence is spelled out for you. This makes the twist reveal very shocking and seem out of place despite the precedence to the contrary. Rather than drop the bomb all at once, this shared past could have been alluded to in flashbacks or something, but sadly this was not done.

FFVIII's story was not well developed in the game? Maybe that's why FFVIII sucks so much. I had to force myself to finish that one.

I would like to add with Suikoden III. SPOILER There's a part where one of the main characters kills the other main character's best friend... it was shocking... at least to me.

Arcanum had great plot twists. In the game you're supposedly the reincarnation of a powerful elf. However later in the game you find out that said elf is still alive and the bag guy isn't really the bad guy at all and its another person entirely. Infact you can team up with the antagonist to stop the real threat.

Basically the whole game is mocking fantasy rpg conventions. Go play it!

Star Ocean: Till The End of Time should be at number 1 and VIII should be at number 10 it wasn't that jaw dropping at VIII jeez.

Till the end of times Finale was a TRUE video game shocker, i enjoyed it alot, but i must Admit at first i was kinda pissed but once i did more info on the storyline itself upon play OTHER star oceans it all made perfect sense.

KOTOR should have atleast been number 2, it was rather original when KOTOR did it and I totally didn't see it comming. It really was a shock and one of those gaming moments I will never forget. It also was really itneresting gameplay-wise because I suddenly felt that I was betrayed by the Jedi knights and I almost switched to the dark side (I played as a good guy). Bastila switching to the dark side made it even harder to resist because it felt that there was nothing left for me on the light side. A big suprise and somethign that altered the gameplay deserves higher then a number 4.

What about Golden Sun? Isaac's group was really the villans as they prevented the Lighthouses from being lighted, because Weyward would have been destroyed by being consumed from a void if Alchemy was not released once again. That was explained near the end of The Lost Age, and that Saturos and Menardi's group were actually the heroes.

Kasz216 (on 27 September 2009)

I agree with the Killer 7 guys.

I mean... SPOILERS

All the main characters are from the same orphanage?

How about all the main characters are THE SAME GUY... who is a shapeshifter who killed the other 7 guys and then forgot he did it... only to realize he did after an entire stage of flashbacks.

Also, they've also been dead for years...

Also your helper is in fact an aspect of the villain.

Also the younger version of your master kills your master, and the main villain.

Oh, and also, the main villain IS your father.

Oh, and main villain and your master aren't dead, but alive again later on fighting the same battle again and will continue to for infinity for... pretty much no conceivable point except their own amusement.

This isn't even considering the political twists.

Reasonable (on 27 September 2009)

Some of those were good twists, but Assassin's Creed? MGS2? Those aren't big twists, heck the AC one was leaked ages before the game even released.

KOTOR is a good twist, as was Bioshock. I'd add the twist in System Shock 2 when a certain old friend reveals themselves - that's probably the best twist I've experienced ever in a game, and one that wasn't forced but fit perfectly with the flow of the plot to that point.

Jumpin (on 27 September 2009)

Xenogears, when you find out what the food of Solaris is, that's fairly shocking: Soylent Green is... zombies!!"

Chrono Trigger, discovering that Lavos isn't some beast created by Magus to destroy the world of men, but rather that he just summoned it to destroy it; that Lavos is really an extra terrestrial parasite who controlled the evolution of the world.

Terranigma - If Baten Kaitos is on there, then Terranigma certainly should be. Your quest to rebuild the world wasn't bestowed by good people.

Xenogears again - The Church is a false organization created to control mankind by an organization who knew God was a myth. That organization in return is secretly controlled by people who are attempting to find and ressurect the real God so that humans can once again become one with God. God is an extra-dimensional creature trapped inside a device called the Zohar which was created by human civilization 10,000 years ago game time, but 5000 years from now our time.

Xenosaga - KOSMOS is a vessel for the spirit of Mary Magdeline and Kaos is Jesus.

Final Fantasy 8 - I was much more shocked about this one: Esthar is a hugely advanced nation and the president of it is none other than Laguna; someone who you had been following through the dreams of the cast. The person responsible for your dreams was Ellone, who was first seen in the very first scene of the game as Squall is waking up in the hospital. Ellone was attempting to change history by allowing Laguna to stay with Raine and their child (Squall). Also, Sorceresses behave kind of like Hilander, they started off as many and their powers increase if someone inherits the lineage of multiple sorceresses; this situation was created when humans defeated the God Hyne and split up the powers among various women. A sorceress in the future, Ultimecia was seeking the last remaining piece which had disappeared from history. Turns out President Laguna has trapped Sorceress Adel in an outer space cryo facility. The party inadvertantly leads Ultimecia directly to Adel allowing an evil Goddess to be born.

Final Fantasy Tactics - Discovering that the Messiah, the Saviour, the Christ which the Church was built upon was actually the anti-Christ bent on bringing destruction to the world.

The tidbit right at the end of the MGS2 paragraph isn't revealed until MGS4, and it's the biggest WTF moment of the game. I'd suggest editing that out.

Also, no FFX?? The plot twist pissed me off, and gave me little reason to finish the game (though I did).
