Sonic was a bad game. I don't know why Dewey was a big deal, the controls looked awkward and frustrating. I'm sure reviews will reflect that. Zelda has never been that popular in Japan (though I agree that it didn't do as well as expected), Super Paper Mario did well, DQS is doing even better. I don't know what you expect them to buy on the Wii right now. There aren't very many core games out that are worth a purchase (to the Japanese) on the Wii. They aren't going to buy Red Steel...

It's way too early to say the Japanese don't support core games on the Wii. In fact, all evidence shows that core games targeted at them will sell well. The next time that will happen though isn't until Super Mario Galaxy, as Metroid Prime is meaningless to them. If Galaxy doesn't do well, THEN you can start worrying about Wii core market in Japan. In America and Europe it's obviously not an issue at all.

"I" don't say that Nintendo goes casual but "the gamers" show that. Mario Party 8 huge amount of sales in the first week only, WII sports, WII Play, DQS still doing ridiculously well. Also some developers, such as Marvelous Inc, don't take the WII all too seriously. Despite the gameplay in Harvest Moon which is really great, the sound and GFX are not all too good. The game doesn't support 480p and the sound mostly goes mono.

Sonic sold bad, Zelda isn't doing well in Japan on the WII, except of the DS version which is thankfully doing amazing, and....not to imagine "Dewy". That little drop of water literally got splashed by the consumers.

If Nintendo has spouted that "Wii is for everyone" or "we're an 'and' company, not an 'or' company" line once, they've done it one thousand times. It's pretty sad to see some people so threatened by Nintendo that they convince themselves that Nintendo is only going for casuals and non-gamers. They have gone out of their way to make it clear that they want hardcore, casual, lapsed, new gamers, and gamers that are only a gleam in their father's eye right now; if a person can't get that through their head it's beyond me how they can even manipulate a keyboard enough to post.

It's also sad that so many people are buying into the idea that the Wii will end up having only a handful of "hardcore" games in the end. It's actually already got quite a few "hardcore" games, and then there's Galaxy, Prime, Brawl, Fire Emblem, and Batallion Wars coming before the end of the year. What really surprises me is that everyone thinks Nintendo has no "hardcore"(I'm beginning to hate that word lol) games because they haven't announced much for the future. So when exactly did Nintendo go from being frustratingly secretive(which they are), to a company that is talking about every game that they have in development? If that's the case I guess they are only releasing Mario Kart, Wii Fit, and maybe Animal Crossing next year...

About Hot Shots Golf, it looks like I was very close in my prediction. Someone said that it won't reach 500k, and I'm not saying it will, but I am saying I think it has a shot in the long-run. This isn't a Gundam game. It's a game that plenty of PS3 owners will pick up along the way, especially as the userbase grows in time. I'm leaning more toward saying it won't reach 500k, but I think it will at least approach that number and surprise quite a few people around here.

@ Leo-j

The Naruto game on 360 means nothing in Japan. It's 5 years behind the Naruto anime and manga content in Japan. They aren't going to buy a new shiny game to play through a 5 year old plotline. It's not even being released in Japan for this reason. It's being made off the crappy english dub of Naruto (in other words expect bad voice acting and be ready to break the game in half after hearing "Believe it!" yelled in an annoying kids voice for 30 minutes straight).

Diomedes, there is so much ignorance in your posts, I don't know where to start. First of all apparently you don't speak english or read it.

Iwata's quote: "We want to appeal to mothers who don't want consoles in their living rooms, and to the elderly and to young women. It’s a challenge, like trying to sell cosmetics to men.''

Since you seem to have trouble understanding a simple statement, he is saying SELLING THE WII TO CASUALS IS LIKE SELLING MAKEUP TO MEN.

The same day Wii Fit was announced, Mario Kart Wii was announced with online play. Nintendo has said dozens of times that they are not focusing on the Core or Casual, but trying to get both.

Core games are selling significantly better on the Wii than they are on the PS3. Zelda more than doubled the sales of Resistance. Red Steel outsold Darkness on PS3 BY TEN TIMES. Resident Evil 4 outsold Ninja Gaiden Sigma by more than double. So, I guess, your system is the one that doesn't appeal to core gamers, because it's not selling any games. Funny how that works. Man that stupid casual PS3, look no one buys it or any games on it! The system has sold 3.5 million units and they have only broke 1 million with 1 game. Wow what a sad system. It's destroying gaming. (you see how retarded a PS3 owner making this argument about the Wii is yet?)

Looks like Core gamers have moved on from your PS3. Time to grow up, stop spewing worthless diarrhea of the mouth, and stop making statements without sources. Stop talking shit about a system you know nothing about, just because you're scared of not having the most popular system. You have an opinion, that's great, but you don't know what the hell you are talking about and you are trying to present your opinion as fact with baseless assumptions and ridiculous accusations. GROW UP KID.

Dissapointing IMO. Mario Party crosses 1m worldwide, and MP8 in Japan just had its BIGGEST debut in the HISTORY of Mario Party games. Hudson is ORGASMING right now. Insane. Im dissapointed with HSG. I knew it would do these type of numbers, but deep down I wanted unrealistic numbers to spring forward. Fact is,

HSG is the biggest game for the nest 12+ months on the PS3, HSG is bigger in Japan than MGS4. The next title bigger than HSG is like Final Fantasy. Meanwhile Wii has Christmas season all to itself in Japan with Dragon Quest FFT:A2 Galaxy Brawl Wiifit etc etc.

Im happy with thr PS3 boost though, about around what Gundam did.

Rath (on 01 August 2007)

Wait, what are we defining core by? Are we defining them by the traditional core gamer who plays platformers and rpgs (Nintendos core gamer) or by the 'new core' fps and hack'n'slash gamers who came in the last two generations and are Sonys core gamer?

Very different gamers, still both core gamers

  • 0
darconi (on 01 August 2007)

Diomedes, they also announced Mario Kart at E3 along with Wii Fit and MK audience does not fit your ultra casual gamer argument.

On top of that, if you look at yearly DS game sales, the top games are closer to core. Look at sales of New SMB, and Zelda to see how well they still sell.

Not all core gamers are 12 year old whiners.

  • 0
Diomedes1976 (on 01 August 2007)

And if ,and thats a big if ,the core games would sell better on the Wii ,then it would be even worse ,as it would suppose a technological stop of about 5-6 years in the development of this industry and the gap with the PC would become so vast that the consoles would be looked agains as toys .

By the way ,I dont know with who is Soriku arguing as I read DonWii ,if its me I would suggest him to stop doing so because I havent read a single line he has written .I have read his "guesses " and "opinions " before and wont waste my time with him .

  • 0
Diomedes1976 (on 01 August 2007)

This is funny .

Iwata himself says that selling the Wii to core gamers is like selling makeup to men and the ONLY new game they have announced is the ultracasual Wii Fit and you understand that the Wii is as good a core machine as anything and that core games will sell in good quantities .

Not they wont ,mainly because core gamers appreciate good graphics ,sound ,environment and enhaced gameplay through realistic and complex action ,not throught waggling a wiimote with PS2 graphics .Then there is the PC .Core gamers wont select the Wii ,even if they have the Wii they will buy the core games in other plattforms and keep the Wii for Nintendo franchises and casual gaming and minigames .

  • 0

Yes in japan NARUTO IS HUGE!!!!!! ANYTHING with naruto on it sells huge, a 360 exclusive with naruto will sell units hehehe trust me. And soriku
WTF?!?!?!!? Who is goin to eat crow you right? And dont start with 12 year olds becuase your 11!!!!!!!!!! lol

  • 0
DonWii (on 01 August 2007)

@Diomedes,

First of all, LoL on the majority of the commnents.

Considering there aren't that many core games out for the Wii right now, I don't blame the results of sales thus far. However, considering Red Steel has outsold games like The Darkness, and Resident Evil Wii Edition outsold Ninja Gaiden Sigma, I would say core games are doing better on the Wii.

Once more core games start coming out, especially this holiday season, I expect a lot of Wii core games to outsell PS3 core games like Lair, Heavenly Sword and Ratchet.

  • 0
Diomedes1976 (on 01 August 2007)

Iwata ,the president of Nintendo himself said .

1)That they were centering in the casual gamer .

2)That they wanted people that had never played games before .

3)That selling the Wii to core gamers would be like selling makeup to men .

Then look at the publicity of the Wii .Its very stylish ,all those adults wearing white clothes and laying comfortably in their beds or sofas in their big and minimalist rooms all white .....

Then look further at the publicity ,all these announcements with people playing Wii Academy ,and all those grannies and old time retirees playing Wiisports as they were young .

This thing isnt geared toward core gamers .Just accept that .

As for people who have the Wii having been in possesion of one console before maybe its true ....maybe they had a Nes some 20 years before .

As for software sales it is clear the core gamers arent doing very well .
As for the DS ,well the Japan sales are so massive that even the core gamers sell good quantities ,but nowhere near the trainings ,nintendogs etc .In Europe and USA its worse ,its always the 4-5 casual games of the DS that dominates the charts .Nintendogs in all its varieties ,Brain training in all its varieties ,and then Mario who isnt casual I will admit but is selling on hype alone ...

Takashii360 (on 01 August 2007)

Well it figures X360 sales are low with a small number of 2800 units...my cousin believes Naruto for the 360 is going to push units...I looked at his face like WTF!!! get out of here maybe amp up to 6000 and then drop....lol

  • 0
naznatips (on 01 August 2007)

DelGunz, you will be held to that on the crow eating thread next week. Anyway, a good boost for PS3 hardware, but we are basically looking at a clone of Gundam Musou. Same number of software sold, same amount of hardware sold. Where did PS3 weekly sales numbers drop down to after Gundam Musou? Only a few weeks after it's release sales were acutally down to almost HALF what they were before it was released. It needed to do better than Musou to really have any effect on PS3 sales.

  • 0
shams (on 01 August 2007)

Numbers lower across the board that expected - for everything!

40k for PS3 still fantastic, almost 4x increase on last week. So the big story of this week was the PS3. Next weeks hardware PS3 sales very interesting to see.

40% of bundled HSG were sold?? That would account for 25k - maybe 35k - of hardware? So another 50k of these units on the shelves?? Wow.

Its also significant that the DS DIDN'T have the top 2 sellers this week (and only 3 spots in top ten!).

First real "competitive" charts we have seen since about Xmas I would say... :P

Soriku WTF?!?! are you talking about I havent said crud to you >_>

I will bet that the wii sales will drop World wide by atleast 100 units lol

And that the ps3 will stay the same meaning -/+ 5k units WW.

And 360 with the usaul 50k world wide

If we're defining "lose momentum" as "sell less than the week before," then no.

Unless you give me 10,000-1 odds or something.

  • 0
FishyJoe (on 01 August 2007)

I will predict the PS3 will lose momentum in the next few weeks.

Anyone want to bet against me?

  • 0
DonWii (on 01 August 2007)

^I said it WOULD be loosing momentum in the next weeks...
Considering you are relating low sales of Wii to loosing momentum...

  • 0
Desroko (on 01 August 2007)

^^We've already explained much of it. One guy visiting a couple stores is not a systematic survey or anything close to it. You can hit a couple Wal-Marts the day they receive shipments and see Wiis in stock here, too - for a few hours, anyway.

Wii sales have dropped and risen constantly since launch. This isn't the first time that it's sold less one week than it did the last, and not the first time people have seized upon it as "evidence" of falling demand.

  • 0
leo-j (on 01 August 2007)

I havent been predicting anything of momentum dont mistaken me for kwaad lol, But maybe this is a slight chance/sign of a decrease in momentum since if you can find a wii in the store in japan according to the thread I read here, then why did it drop in sales? Or it could be that it sold out..Yep even though the ps3 is continuing to outsell 360 2 to1 it is decreasing in momentum with its recent tripled sales in japan, but watever ama wait and see what happens.

  • 0
FishyJoe (on 01 August 2007)

Hmm, demand for video games dropping during the summer?

Unpossible!!!

  • 0

I am suprised ps3 sales tripled in japan.

Though, I am still looking forward to DQS, because I am NOT a fan of the DQ franchise style. Same reason why I got FFXII, though that was still, in a sense, traditional.

  • 0
DonWii (on 01 August 2007)

^Nope.

Also, I defended DQS as a DQ game, until I heard form Wiigirl that it wasn't that great. I defend HSG because it is a big franchise (I predicted 200k, 300k on the other thread). In case you grouped me in your previous assertion.

ckmlb (on 01 August 2007)

Did I say Mario Party 8 sold bad anywhere?

Stop putting words in my mouth, if you were referring to me Don Wii.

Also, if I had mentioned anywhere that DQ:S is a crappy game everyone would be all over me, because apparently I forfeit my rights to discuss the quality of Wii games because the Wii is not my favorite console.

  • 0
DonWii (on 01 August 2007)

@FishyJoe

What do you expect from a 12 year old?

  • 0
DonWii (on 01 August 2007)

The one argument that I find interesting is the "sales by base". Mario Party 8 sold 280k to a userbase of 3M, while HSG sold 180k to a userbase of 1M. Was Mario supposed to sell 3 times better in order to consider it good compared to HSG? Did you ever think that, while there may be 10M or 100M Wii owners, only 1M like the game?

For example: Considering God of War sold around 4M to a userbase of 120M+, and SSBM sold 6M to a userbase of 20M, should God of War be considered a bad selling game?

Hell no.

Also, as of right now, I would put Wii as 10% hardcore ,50% core gaming and 40% casual games. There is no denying that there are more casual games in comparison to the other consoles, but there are plenty of hadcore/core games out now. The division will even out more as time passes by, and especially by the end of the year. By then, I'd put it at 15%,55%,30%.

  • 0
FishyJoe (on 01 August 2007)

Diomedes, do you have verifiable statistics to backup your statements or are you making them up from your imagination?

  • 0
johnsobas (on 01 August 2007)

if the wii is getting 80% casual games, how is it outselling 360 and PS3 combined x 2 every week when it is apparently only targeting 20% of total gamers.
I hate to break it to you diomedes but the casual gamers are a much bigger crowd than the core gamers, and the Wii is a very friendly system for core and casual gamers.

You're argument makes absolutely no sense, just look at the sales.

  • 0
Desroko (on 01 August 2007)

Except the Wii's audience is in no way wholly casual. Studies have shown that only 10% of Wii owners did not own a console the previous generation. Even with a generous definition of "casual," that in no way comes out to 80%. The Wii's audience is mostly mainstream, with a chunk of core and a sliver of casual.

And this has probably been said to you many times before, but: Don't worry. If you buy the games you like, then companies will continue to cater to your tastes. Core gamers aren't going to disappear just because more mainstream and casual ganmers are added to that mix; it's not a zero-sum game. The market is expanding.

  • 0
steven787 (on 01 August 2007)

Do you think there were less Wii's shipped in Japan last week, so NA could get them this week for strikers?

  • 0
Diomedes1976 (on 01 August 2007)

For me there is hardcore gaming ,core gaming ,and then casual gaming .

I like this industry being 20% hardcore ,60% core gaming and 20% casual games .Casual players can buy those casual games and some of the core gaming ones .Thats what we have know more or less all these years .Yes ,theres a Buzz ,Singstar ,Eye Toy etc but for each of these there are lots of RPG ,FPS ,plattformers ,beat-them-ups ,driving games ,sports games etc .

With the Wii is seems the balance will change to 5% hardcore ,15% core and 80% casual games .With casual games being gimmicky things based on the wiimote ,sports simulations in the XaviX console mould with a negligible depth in-game ,mingames recopilations ,pseudo games to make you smarter ,learn languages ,make you fit ,see better ,cook better ,wash better etc ...

Thats why I intensely dislike the Wii right now .If the machine was selling OK to keep some market enough to do ok I woulndt despise it so much ,but if it transforms itself in the new standar and shapes the industry after its strenghts and gimmicky appel then I think things will be sour for core and hardcore gamers alike .Its a simple and inevitable thing ....if most users are moms ,daddies who want to play with the children ,little boys and girls ,grannies and old time retirees then the companies wont spend 10-20 millions making a game ...they will just do some gimmicky thing slighty original in its argument or use of the wiimote and spend less than a million to concentrate on the marketing toward that casual crowd .Spending 10-20 million just to sell worse or as well in the better scenario just woulndt have any economic sense .

  • 0
Bodhesatva (on 01 August 2007)

That's a valid point, Diomedes, and should be taken in to consideration.

  • 0
Diomedes1976 (on 01 August 2007)

In fact when gundam mussou appeared the PS3 was selling 21-22K weekly ,so the jump was some 22-23K units .Before HSG the PS3 was selling some 13K units weekly ,so the jump is 27K ,more than the Gundam Mussou one .And HSG will have more legs ,as it has a online feature that will grow a community and is a more attractive game for non-hardcore gamers .

  • 0
Bodhesatva (on 01 August 2007)

Also interesting to note is that the Wii is apparently beginning to ease supply constraints in Japan. We'll see how that plays out in the coming weeks.

  • 0
Bodhesatva (on 01 August 2007)

HSG is a killer franchise in Japan, akin to Madden here. And it's exclusive to Playstation. The last two did 1.3-1.4 million copies in Japan alone; I expected a lot more than this.

Instead, the game is tracking for well under 500k sales and the PS3 saw a smaller bump here than with Gundam Musou. I expected slightly better results.

  • 0
KruzeS (on 01 August 2007)

The only core game here that really bombed is Dewy's, which most whiners wouldn't say it's a core game to begin with. It's unfortunate that it bombed so hard, but it was probably overshadowed as a new release by Mario Party. I'm with WiiGirl hoping Treasure Island doesn't find the same fate. I'll buy both anyway.

  • 0
WiiGirl76 (on 01 August 2007)

Hopefully that game will have some good sales in Japan... but I have my doubts a bit about it.

  • 0

By the way Treasure Island Z aka Zack & Wicky release date has been announced in Japan, 25 October. Now I just hope Mario Galaxy will not be released on the very same day.... but like 3 weeks sooner ehe. Probably later anyway... unsure

How many people are defending the quality of the game?? Almost nobody on here has even played it. Wiigirl has, so it would make sense she is the one to complain. You want me to talk about how much DQS sucks when i haven't even played it? I'll talk about sales, but not about the quality of the game.

  • 0
Diomedes1976 (on 01 August 2007)

In fact the Wii has sold very well ,and the game Mario Party 8 has sold excellent .Just that it isnt a game that moves systems ...I mean ,who will buy a Wii just to play Mario Party 8 ?

  • 0
TheSource (on 01 August 2007)

Looks like the preliminary data was in the right ballpark as usual...

I had Mario Party 8 at "around 275,000", and PS3 at 30,000-40,000 units this week, which the Famitsu data verifies.

It seems the early data was too high on Hot Shot Golf 5 (had it 200-230k), and too high on Wii (had it around 100k). We'll see what ioi and M-C put up.

  • 0
naznatips (on 01 August 2007)

I don't see how this became a concern. Core titles sell fine in Japan. Even if you didn't like it DQ:S did pretty well. They certainly sell well in America. There is no reason to be threatened by new gamers...

WiiGirl76 (on 01 August 2007)

PS3Owner, for once sake.. grow up!!! At least I'm objective enough to criticize Nintendo games, but I never ever see you have the guts to do that with the PS3. And you're looking at a future PS3 owner :P Back to being multi platform, from 2 sides that is.

  • 0
WiiGirl76 (on 01 August 2007)

@ckmlb, thanks, and I also think DQS is nothing more but an easy going on rail hack n slash game which almost has nothing to do with any other kind of spin off games out of the DQ series let alone the main game. As far as I know Mario Party 8 didn't get much publicity as well, maybe on the Japanese television, but with these kind of sales really bugs me. I just hope the core games will sell some more on the WII or I've got the feeling we're dealing with a console which will end up as a party console with only a 2 or 3 major core titles.

  • 0

to the people asking for oblivion numbers, they were between 53000 and 44000 ( the numbers of Powerful Pro Baseball 14 (PS2) and Mobile Suit Gundam: MS War Front 0079 (Wii)).
Good numbers for gundam (a fps in japan)

  • 0

The game is nothing like DQ games, it's not even RPG really, it's a game where you literally walk left or right and wave your wii mote the whole game....

If DQ IX had moved from DS to Wii I would have been so much happier because that would have been a really good game to add to the Wii library and I would have preferred the series to stay on consoles.

I never go around saying HSG is a great game, I actually think it's a very average game that looks very average too.

Dewy bombed because it was probably not known much and was a small release. It certainly looks like it has more potential as a game than DQ:S does.

  • 0
Kasz216 (on 01 August 2007)

I agree the rejoicing about low scores is hate. Though honestly 70K is low? So some Wii's are actually finding there way to shelves... this was bound to happen eventually. Some people thought it would be right after the holidays... is it that big of a deal if it's right before the holidays? X-mas will likely drive Wii sales back up to where it sells out while hopefully pushing PS3's and 360's close to sell out numbers too. Which is possible considering there is a relativly low amount of PS3's shipped right now compared to what's sitting in their warehouses.

Heck, it'd be great if some Wii's were on the shelves around here. I've got a bunch of friends who want them but arn't willing to go through all the stuff you currently have to go through around here to get one. Wii is well past the point of where it'll lose 3rd party support. Lets hope the PS3 can reach that mark as well... if there isn't a high enough PS3 install base they won't translate over all those quirky japanese RPGS and turn based strategy games i love.

  • 0
WiiGirl76 (on 01 August 2007)

@ckmlb and I hate SE for making such a crap game on the WII. Seriously are people really stupid for wanting to have this game? Want some serious adventure buy Zelda on the DS, 10 times... what 100 times better.

Good sales for Minna no Golf 5, but losing it with 100.000 from another idiotic Party game is kind of ridiculous. To me it sounds like a strategy from Nintendo. What pisses me really off is to see Dewy bombing so hard. Good for the PS3 to get a raise in sales like that. WII sales are dissappointing dispite the sales of MP8, but I guess most casual gamers already have their WII in Japan :P I've got the feeling most core gamers are waiting over there as core games sell almost like crap.

Wow, the PS3 with a great week manages more than half the Wii's sales in a meh week. Game over for Nintendo, Sony domination is returning. Anyhow, back in the real world that really sucks for Dewy. Game looks very interesting and seemed like from what I understand the kind of game that would do well in Japan. Guilty Gear is a bad remake of a year old game from what I read so no surprise there. HSG doesn't turn out to be the PS3 savior it was made out to be, heck it couldn't even beat Mario Party 8.

Great more sony vs nintendo posts. Anyone else notice that sony fans have become more hostile. Before they used to joke around about the technical limitations of the wii, now they direct attack the wii and its fans. Also just because a certain wii game does better than a ps3 game, nintendo fans shouldn't brag about it, that just creates more hostility. Anyway, its good to see oblivion up there, I wasn't a fan but I saw why people liked it. Oh before someone says the ps3 version is better, I played both versions and I didn't like it. Also sad to see Dewy bomb, it looked intresting.
