Square Enix during a Q&A session in their financial results briefing or the third quarter of the 2020 fiscal year was asked about developing titles for the current and next generation of consoles. They plan to release their games for both generations until "farther down the road."

"The next-generation consoles will have backward compatibility, so we plan for the time being to make our new titles available for both current and next-generation consoles," said Square Enix. "It will therefore be somewhat farther down the road that we release titles exclusively for the next-generation consoles."

Square Enix was also asked if the delay of the first part of Final Fantasy VII Remake from March 3 to April 10 would impact the release of the second part and they said "No, it will not."

Basically wait and see which console is selling the most so has the most potentials sales as an exclusive.

Makes sense, I don't know why people think this frame of mind is not reasonable. Developers need time to get to know the hardware before they fully take advantage of it. In addition to this, no developer these days wants to jump to an install base of 0 and leave behind tens of millions of potential customers. This is the case for Microsoft, Square Enix, and I'd imagine they won't be the only ones.

It's rationale for 3rd party but not for first party developer or console maker studio . Console maker need to push their console sales by making next gen exclusives to sell their console. 3rd party are free , and they need to sell games either in current gen or next gen.

Crossgen titles have been how 3rd parties have done since ever =p . Sony as first party probably will have some exclusives on the first year though.
