The reason why Minecraft is doing so well right now is probably because many big youtubers are playing it with huge success. For instance, Pewdiepie, the biggest youtuber, started uploading everyday a Minecraft related video amassing more than 10 million views for each upload. As a consequence, other youtubers started doing the same with success and the sales of Minecraft are rising.
Can confirm I am only playing it because of friends who follow big youtubers. I bought 30 days of realms on PC and the mobile version which has realms for free for 30 days. So I spent just under $20 in total.
I through Minecraft would run out of legs a couple of years ago. Its crazy how this game doesn't die. It makes it so much harder to make a sequel when the first game continues to sell so well.
What would a minecraft sequel do? You can already update the existing game and have a ton of content. The textures and shaders can be updated. The game performs well so why a sequel?
The textures and shaders can be modded*
Its true, they might not ever need to make a sequel. Which is good for us in a way.
Why? Was it on sale? :/
