The VGChartz Gap charts are updated monthly and each article focuses on a different gap chart. The charts include comparisons between the 7th generation and 8th generation platforms, as well as comparisons within the 8th generation. All sales are worldwide, unless otherwise stated.
Xbox One Vs. Xbox 360 USA:
Gap change in latest month: 181,848 – X360
Gap change over last 12 months: 3,209,995 – X360
Total Lead: 1,543,869 – X360
Xbox One Total Sales: 25,273,337
Xbox 360 Total Sales: 26,817,206
April 2019 is the 66th month of the Xbox One being on sale. In the latest month the gap grew in favor of the Xbox 360 by 181,848 units when compared to the Xbox One when you align the launches of the two consoles. In the last 12 months the Xbox 360 has grown its lead by 3.21 million units. The Xbox 360 currently leads by 1.54 million.
Both consoles launched in November. The Xbox 360 launched in November 2005, while the Xbox One launched in November 2013. The Xbox One has sold 25.27 million units, while its predecessor the Xbox 360 sold 26.82 million units.
Note: Xbox 360 currently leads by 11.71 million units worldwide when you align the launches.

Wow, never would have guessed that the One was ahead for most of this. Did they just lose ground everywhere else?
Last gen had a very slow start, but kept improving sales almost every year over 5-6 years. So early on, the XBO was outselling the 360 worldwide.
And yes, the 360 did much better outside of the US than the XBO did, but not in the US. Add those two together and you'll know why it took so long for the 360 to catch up.
