Report: Sony No Longer Providing Full Game Digital Download Codes to Retailers - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 02 May 2019 / 3,293 Views

Retailers will no longer be getting full game digital download codes from Sony for the PlayStation 4 starting April 1, according to a memo sent out to GameStop.

Digital games after April 1 will need to be purchased straight from the PlayStation Network. However, DLC and PlayStation Network gift cards will still be available.

Digital codes dont take up house space. Those that don't want or have room for cabinets

@Kirby What about those that don't like putting bank card info on consoles? There are reasons why some prefer other methods. Also cards make great gifts.

Gifting. You can at least hand someone a card, rather than say "I gifted you a game. Log in and check it out."

Also, you may want to pay cash.

Paying cash is probably the best reason yes, but as for gifting i would once again go for an actual copy

I think its more about cutting out the middle man, Sony wants people making game purchases directly from the PS Store.

There's that Sony greed from 599 US dollar days cropping up again! Act right Sony, thanks to Google, next gen is already looking more competetive.

How so? I mean could you not just go to the PSN store and buy the game? You have to enter a code anyway so why not just skip a step? Or are you worried that now you can't trade in your games towards digital codes? Could you just not trade it towards PSN credit? I really don't see how this is greed in anyway. I have never bought, seen someone buy, or know someone that bought a digital code for a game. The closest thing I EVER got was buying WoW time cards years ago.

The first one obviously. Why would they sell them for anything other than profit.

Stores don't profit from digital cards, its all free revenue because the stores aren't paying a cost to have the cards. If anything the publisher is losing because they are pushing the cards (even though its cheap as dirt to produce) but they hardly account for sales at all. Every month at best buy i have to remove a ton of cards from our inventory, and we 95% of the time haven't sold any.
