Halo: The Master Chief Collection will not require a paid Xbox Live Gold subscription in order to play online. However, a free Xbox Live account will be required, even if you purchase the game on Steam

Here is an overview of the PC version of the game:

For the first time ever, The Master Chief’s story comes to PC. Featuring Halo: Reach along with Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2: Anniversary, Halo 3, the Halo 3: ODST Campaign and Halo 4, this is the definitive Halo experience.

Honoring the iconic hero and his epic journey, The Master Chief’s story is brought together with a total of 67 campaign missions plus more than 120 multiplayer maps (including the original Halo Combat Evolved maps) and Spartan Ops maps. Now built for PC with mouse and keyboard support and up to 4K UHD and HDR, this is the collection Halo fans have been waiting for!

Halo: The Master Chief Collection is available now on the Xbox One and is coming soon to Windows PC via the Microsoft Store and Steam.

It would have caused a completely uproar if it did.

So only Xbox users get to pay for live. That's not fair for the Xbox userbase.

Does that mean we'll be able to cross-play with friends who play on Xbox? I still have my Xbox Live account for my 360 and partial One days, and a lot of my friends still prefer Xbox while I play on PC now.

@CharzoreI agree to a point with cheaper games etc however for my Xbox to make up my PC costs via its subscription model, it will take 20 years. 20 years of Live. X cost $500, my PC cost $2.5k so $100 a year for 20 years. Thats a long ass time. Though i do buy a bulk of my games on Steam sales but i can also argue i get 24 games a year for free paying for Live so theres benefits on both sides.

LOL giving up their last exclusives that people cared about their sexbox. WTF?

What bothers me the most is how it doesn't require a gold subscription. Thus why I canceled my subscription. The value of owning an xbox console is getting less and less.

@fuallmofus Umm.. you do release that MS own 100% rights to the Halo franchise? What is this giving up exclusives business? I am pretty sure they still own the IP and Halo MCC stopped selling a long time ago so if you plan on purchasing it on Steam or Windows 10, I am sure Xbox thanks you for supporting there business as the money all goes to one place.

@PhatChips Well the value of the Xbox is that you can play these games at 4k for less than $500 compared to a PC with similar specs. PC was worth $2.5k of PC goodness last year. Good thing is I don't have to worry about subscriptions, bad thing is that my PC cost me $2.5k. Also good luck trying to play this game on Apple, you will require Windows which is MS other platform.

Thing is, that 2.5k pays for itself over a short period of time, compared to a long one of paying top price for games+sub fee+a netflix style pass.
