PS4 vs Xbox One in the US – VGChartz Gap Charts – December 2018 Update - Sales

The VGChartz Gap charts are updated monthly and each article focuses on a different gap chart. The charts include comparisons between the 7th generation and 8th generation platforms, as well as comparisons within the 8th generation. All sales are worldwide, unless otherwise stated.

 

PS4 Vs. XOne US:

Gap change in latest month: 135,986 – XOne

Gap change over last 12 months: 969,197 – PS4

Total Lead: 3,656,853 – PS4

PS4 Total Sales: 28,248,598

Xbox One Total Sales: 24,591,745

In December 2018 the gap in the US between the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One grew in favor of the Xbox One. The Xbox One sold 135,986 more units than the PlayStation 4 in the last month.  However, the PlayStation 4 sold 969,197 more units in the last year.  The PlayStation 4 currently leads by 3.66 million units.

The PlayStation 4 launched in the US on November 15, 2013, while the Xbox One launched on November 22, 2013. The PlayStation 4 has sold 28.25 Million units, while the Xbox One has sold 24.59 million units.

Only a small minority would have predited this after the success of X360 in the US (49m X360 vs. 29m PS3).

I kind of thought this outcome was obvious shortly after they released it. The high price of the XB1 (from Kinect) plus the DRM they originally planned was really a death sentence.

Really the surprising thing to me is that they are still pretty close to one another in spite of all of Microsoft's missteps. Microsoft is actually stronger in North America than I thought. It won't be too difficult for them to overcome Sony in NA with their next console as long as they don't have any more serious screw ups.

yeah now things are evened up for next gen. It will be interesting to see which comes out on top. Sony made up a lot of ground this gen to overtake them in the US

Could you also make a PS4 vs Switch in the US? Think that would be closer and thus more interesting than the PS4 vs XBO chart here on the long run
