Nintendo Switch Online Tops 8 Million Subscribers - News

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa announced Nintendo Switch Online has surpassed eight million subscribers. The figures includes Family Memberships, but not free trials.

"In last September, we launched Nintendo Switch Online, a paid service that expands the online functionality of Nintendo Switch," said Furukawa. "Nintendo Switch Online has had a good start, with the number of subscribers surpassing 8 million accounts not including free trials. In keeping with our goal of providing Nintendo Switch owners with 'More Games. More Features. More Fun,' we are working on continuing to expand the service offerings."

PSN subscribers are about 80m with 94m PS4 sold, right? I thought that at least 50 % of switch owners would use the online service...

Ah, thanks. I don't use PS+ by myself, my bad. Then 25 % subscriptions is OK, I think...

Well the family account potentially gives 8 people access, which would drastically lower the number of accounts as a ratio to Switch owners. I wish we had the breakdown of regular and family accounts. If we assume there's enough family accounts that there are an average of two Switch owners per account, which seems fairly likely to me, that means 16m are online, 50%. If the average is three owners per account, which seems possible, you get to 24m, which is the vast majority of Switches out there. So they're probably doing fine, though I bet they'd do better if the service offered a bit more.

I am surprised that so many switch owners use this service at all. Considering what this service offers, the price is outrageous (like everything else in Nintendo's eShop). No manufacturer understands better than Nintendo to take a lot of money out of people with backward technology. For my part, I would never get the idea of spending money on such a backward service. Compared to PS+ or XB live Gold, the price/performance ratio of Nintendo's online service is very bad.

Everything on the eShop is outrageously overpriced?! You first had a point and then you smashed it on the wall and stomped on it.
