Report: EA Cancels Open World Star Wars Game

Report: EA Cancels Open World Star Wars Game - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 01 April 2019 / 2,827 Views

Electronic Arts has cancelled the open world Star Wars game that was in development at EA Vancouver, according to a report from Kotaku.

EA Vancouver has been working on the game since October 2017, when EA shut down Visceral Games.

Several people have talked with Kotaku and it appears the game was still in early development and no one was laid off due to the cancellation. The game was codenamed Orca with a scoundrel or bounty hunter protagonist who would explore various open world planets.

Disney executives must be hitting their heads against a wall at this point. Their deal with EA has brought nothing to them but controversy and failed projects. Any other company would have made dozens of games with the Star Wars license at this point, and EA can only manage two shooters inferior to their 2006 counterpart and a couple of mobile cash grabs. Next time don't give monopolistic control of such a license to a single studio.

And yet they basically closed down Lucas Arts for some reason, a developer/company than not only made good Star Wars games on the regular but published many other IPs as well.

The market is hungry for Star Wars games and all they keep doing is cancelling them.

Take away Fifa and Madden what does EA have left? Battlefield V tanked as well.

I agree. Every EA franchise (except FIFA, Sims and maybe Dragon Age) seems to be at an all time low and I doubt that they'll be able to extend the Star Wars deal when it expires in 2023. No wonder why they're desperate to make EA Access a success.

Top 25 EA franchises:

  1. FIFA: FIFA 19 has sold a bit slower than 18 which surpassed 24 mill. but 19 has still performed well
  2. The Sims: The Sims 4 has sold 10 mill. compared to Sims 1, 2 and 3 which sold 16 mill, 13 mill og 10+ mill respectively
  3. Need for Speed: All time low
  4. Madden NFL: All time low
  5. Battlefield: All time low
  6. Medal of Honor: All time low
  7. NBA Live: All time low
  8. PGA Tour: All time low
  9. SimCity: All time low
  10. Command & Conquer: All time low
  11. Rock Band: All time low
  12. Mass Effect: All time low
  13. Burnout: All time low
  14. Skate: All time low
  15. NHL: All time low
  16. Crysis: All time low
  17. Titanfall: All time low
  18. Dragon Age: May be a franchise in growth.
  19. EA Sports UFC: All time low
  20. Dead Space: All time low
  21. Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare: All time low
  22. SSX: All time low
  23. Fight Night: All time low
  24. Army of Two: All time low
  25. Dante's Inferno: All time low

So they have had this IP for a couple of years and all they managed to do with it was make 2 battlefront Battlefront games?

EA is a total mess, cant imagine what will happen if Anthem tanks.

Hopefully it won't, this is their last project they are actually making something "'"fresh"""

EA has had the license for over 5 years and has only managed to put out 2 lacking Battlefront games. Such a disappointment.

In a 4 year time, 2002-2006, under LucasArts and other companies, over 15 Star Wars games were released including Knights of the Old Republic (Masterpiece) Republic Commando, and both original Star Wars Battlefront games. In a 4 year time span since EA got the exclusivity deal, ONLY 2 mediocre at best Battlefront games have been released with 2 others cancelled. This exclusivity contract needs to END with EA and Disney should license out the Star Wars video game IP on a case by case basis with different developers. I can only imagine what a Star Wars game would look like under the helms of CD Projekt Red, or one of Sony's first party developers, or Rockstar, or Eidos Interactive, or even Rocksteady.

I know Amy Hennig was working on one that got cancelled. Was this the one or is this some other project that also got cancelled?
