Spencer: Next Generation Xbox to Use AMD

Spencer: Next Generation Xbox to Use AMD - News

Head of Xbox Phil Spencer during the AMD CES 2019 keynote revealed Microsoft will keep using AMD chips in future Xbox consoles.

"As a company, we look at the opportunity in gaming and one of the things I want to say is when we think who our partners are, we think about great companies that do great work, but also do it in the right way," said Spencer.

"[AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su is] somebody that I respected a ton in this industry and I’ve seen the way [she has] led AMD, and I think having a partner like AMD that works so collaboratively with us on our future technology, but also as a cultural level I think fits so well, it’s awesome to have you as a partner.

"As we look forward to future platforms that we’re building and work that we’re doing, the partnership and the innovations that we’ve seen in the past have led to what we’ve been able to do today, I think they’re going to be critically important to our future endeavors. I’m really looking forward to showing those to people more in the future."

It is rumored Microsoft plans to release two next generation Xbox consoles in holiday 2020.

I feel like Sony is gonna do BC not because its necessary, but it would be a popular features and the optics of Xbox doing it at launch and PS5 not is gonna look bad. Hence, maybe don't give you competitor an edge assuming it would be easy to offer BC.

Not exactly shocking news but good to know. It's pretty well known that both Sony and Microsoft are very happy with their current single-chip processors in the PS4/Xbox - one chip with CPU, GPU, display logic, memory controller, etc. to keep costs down. And ALL the developers are thankful they are using x86-64 architecture on the CPU side, and unified shader/DirectX 12-era architecture on the GPU side, so no doubt both Sony and MS would want to continue that as well.

Which really only leaves AMD as an option. NVIDIA makes great GPUs, but they have no x86-64 license. So by using an NVIDIA GPU, it means using two chips (one discrete GPU, one discrete CPU). And then that means either you still go with AMD for the CPU, or Intel for the CPU. I gotta guess an Intel/NVIDIA combination is just completely out of the question price-wise for any console. And why even bother with an AMD/NVIDIA combo when you could just go all-AMD and have one chip for everything?

It was quite expected that both MS and Sony would go AMD again.

In terms of what? I'm assuming you have seen their next line of GPU's? They are terrible, weaker with higher power draw than their competitor. Next gen consoles are not going to be a massive leap, better off not bringing out for a little longer.

Everything' comes at a cost. GPUs arent terrible just compared to the likes of Nvidia they are beat. But you pay for what you get. Unless ypu want to pay over $800 for an Nvidia console. Keep in mind consoles are heavily customised.

With Phil on stage and pics of PS4 and Pro on some slides boasting about high performance console gaming leadership, you can bet the next gen home consoles will be fully AMD.
