The VGChartz Gap charts are updated monthly and each article focuses on a different gap chart. The charts include comparisons between the 7th generation and 8th generation platforms, as well as comparisons within the 8th generation. All sales are worldwide, unless otherwise stated.

This monthly series compares the combined aligned sales of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One with the combined aligned sales of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

 

The gap grew in favor of the combined sales PlayStation 4 and Xbox One when compared to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the last month by 1.73 million units. In the last 12 months the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have increased the lead by 587,094 units. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One lead by a combined 26.12 million units.

The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in their first 61 months sold a combined 104.56 million units, while the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have sold a combined 130.68 million units.

Gap change in latest month: 1,734,055 – PS4 & XOne

Gap change over last 12 months: 587,094 - PS4 & XOne

Total Lead: 26,124,366 – PS4 & XOne

Total Combined PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 Sales: 104,556,761

Total Combined PlayStation 4 and Xbox One Sales: 130,681,127

PS360 will likely minimize the gap due to Kinect and PS Move within the next 2 years.

Pretty obvious to me that the Wii attracted away some of the customers that normally get Playstation or XBoX. If you look at PS2+XBox it's pretty close to what this generation is tracking at. The Wii attracted them away during generation 7 and then they came back for generation 8.

PS2+Xbox did roughtly 180m.
PS3+Xbox 360 did roughly 180m.
PS4+Xbox One will most probably do roughly 180m.

Just look at the chart above. PS3+XBox360 is clearly tracking below PS4+XB1.
