Publisher Ubisoft announced Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has set a new record for the franchise for the best-selling launch week for the current console generation.

"We are incredibly proud of what the team accomplished with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and humbled by the amazing reception from critics and players," said Ubisoft senior vice president of sales and marketing Geoffroy Sardin.

"Based on the quality of the game and the very encouraging reactions from players, we expect Odyssey to be one of the top performing Assassin’s Creed games of all-time. Launch is just the start of this epic journey. We have robust content plans for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey that will keep players engaged and exploring the game’s beautiful and compelling world for a long time to come."

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey launched on October 5 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC.

Spending a week on holiday in Peloponnese shortly before I will get around to playing this game. May provide an extra surreal feeling during my playthrough.

Eat shit.

Wonder if it will continue. There's been a lot of resentment with the microtransactions, in particular the EXP increase. People are saying the game is really grindy otherwise especially if you play only story missions.

ResilientFighter (on 10 October 2018)

Wow and black flag is much higher regarded. Probably due to there not being so many consoles available then yet it sold on two generations right?

shikamaru317 (on 10 October 2018)

Actually, AC Odyssey and Black Flag reviews are nearly the same. 83 on PS4 for both games. PC is higher on Odyssey, 90 vs 84 for Black Flag. Black Flag didn't get many XB1 reviews, so can't compare there. Sales wise, Black Flag probably had a bigger launch if you include the last gen 360 and PS3 versions as well, but that is to be expected.

Black flag is called one of the best in the series by the fanbase everywhere I pass on social media while this one is getting a lot of criticism. Those reviews on metacrtic are only of under 100 people of the millions that buy the game. I trust in user reviews more lol

Shiken (6 days ago)

User reviews are even less accurate though. AC has its share of haters, and haters of any game will give zeros while fans of a franchise hand out 10s. Metacritic in general is flawed.

keep in mind the wording being used here, Black Flag was a game which was also on previous gen and current gen so the wording of current Gen Assassins creed game would exclude Black Flag as it wasn't current gen only, it was a cross gen title.

Yeah, like Shiken said, you can't really trust user reviews for Odyssey. There is a targeted hate campaign against it because of microtransactions. Also, some of the old schools fans are still upset about AC moving from action-adventure to action RPG, and are giving it bad user reviews as a result. Doesn't mean it's a bad game, trust me, it's great, I'm enjoying it as much as Black Flag so far.

Black flag 7.9 user score for ps4 from 1.5 thousand votes
odyssey 5.9 so far from almost 600 votes and I imagine it will drop to 4 something in a couple months
I trust the people more than the reviewers from magazines that tend to have bias and incentives from game companies.

well, they do say the customer is always right, if the customer is pissed off I would ask why.

Here is another prime example of flawed user reviews...

BotW had a user review score in the high 6 range for a month or so after it was released. After MC filtered out most of the obvious troll reviews from sour XBox and PS fans, it jumped above an 80 out of no where.

Again, user reviews are the least accurate form of review scores when going by an average because most users will just give it a 10 or a 0 respectively with no context to back it up.

You are biased and resorted to calling anyone who disagrees with your opinion, regardless of proof presented, invalid while discrediting larger review sites because you do not agree with them to downplay a game that many people seemly have no issues with. Your argument is invalid.

See what I did there?

Yes I see you flaming me because I gave proof black flag was better rated by the customers than Odyssey. So i will take the high road and leave you to your bias that even brought in zelda breath of the wild GOTY and insulting two entire console bases to defend assassin's creed...

I am curious, in what way am I bias?

  • 0
ResilientFighter (6 days ago)

I said your opinion is invalid due to you resorting to calling ps and xbox fans sour trolls over not getting zelda. You said i'm "calling anyone" what does that mean? I mocked or insulted no vgchart user in this post and simply stated one game is better recieved critically than the other by customers and that has more importance than the 83 on metacritic. Calling people sour trolls is bias if that answers your question. Have a nice day

Another problem here is that you are using metaritic for user reviews. Metacritic is the worst place to get user reviews from, it is filled with trolls. Over on Amazon US right now Odyssey has 4/5 stars from 42 user reviews on PS4

Anyone who gave Halo 5 a zero is sour and bias.

Anyone who gave God of War or Horizon a zero is sour and bias.

Anyone who gave BotW a 0 is sour and bias.

Sorry bud, i am not bias. I just call them like I see them. No game out there is a zero, let alone most exclusives on all three platforms.

What does seem bias however, is favoring user reviews despite the various flaws I already pointed out because they favor your opinion, and discredit big review sites because they do not. I believe the twrm is called cherry picking.

Meanwhile, the Playstation and Xbox digital stores both require you to own a game digital before you can give it a score. On Xbox Store it has 4.2/5 stars with 227 reviews. On Playstation it has 4.5/5 stars with 447 reviews.

Very good point shikamaru

ResilientFighter (6 days ago)

Shikamaru you are the first one to bring up metacritic mentioing they both have an 83... If you want to use a system for your argument you have to use both sides of it Critic and User. I see many games get 100-80 ratings and only 1 or 2 reviews from magazines give a 40-60 so wouldn't that make those critics "trolls"? Im out of this conversation.

shikamaru317 (6 days ago)

Metacritic is severely flawed for user reviews. For starters, the fanboys for the big 3, Sony, MS, and Nintendo, all give bad user reviews to exclusives on other platforms. However, AC is not an exclusive. The reason why the AC user reviews are so bad there is threefold. 1. AC Odyssey has time saver style microtransactions, you can use real world money to buy a permanent XP earning speed boost; several popular youtubers who are heavily anti microtransaction made up a story that the game has slow XP earning in order to strongarm people into buying the XP earning speed MT, which is false, the XP earning speed is just fine, I am overlevelling the recommended level for regions by doing most of the side content as I go.

2. There are alot of people on metacritic who hate Ubisoft for some reason and give all of their games bad user reviews.

  • -1
shikamaru317 (6 days ago)

3. There are alot of oldschool AC fans who are still salty about Ubisoft changing AC from an action-adventure series to an action-RPG series, so they gave both AC Origins and AC Odyssey bad user reviews, even though most of them didn't play either game. What they don't realize is that the series needed to evolve to stay relevant, the series had grown stagnant, and that caused AC Syndicate to flop even though it was a fun game. If Ubisoft hadn't of shaken things up by changing the series to RPG, sales would have continued to dwindle. Instead we now have the biggest AC launch so far this gen.
