The VGC Top 100 Best Games of All Time, #90-81 - News
by Daniel Share-Strom , posted on 07 May 2009 / 87,606 Views
Continuing down our list of the VGChartz community's top 100 games of all time, it's easy to realize just how timeless some of these classics are. Some of the graphics may be dated, but the gameplay sure isn't. Everyone here is bound to have fond memories of at least a few of the following games. As always, some will disagree with these picks, but it can't be denied that these are some of the greatest games ever made. Please enjoy YOUR choices for the 90th to 81st best games of all time.
90. Kingdom Hearts 2
When Square’s unorthodox Disney/Final Fantasy crossover story sold in excess of four million copies, fans could delight in the fact that a sequel was inevitable. Kingdom Hearts 2 ups the ante in every possible way. The story adds layers of depth to Sora’s journey, expanding on the themes of love, friendship, and loyalty. The combat intensity was ratcheted up from the first game, with the addition of different forms for Sora, as well as Reaction Commands, which are well-thought-out Quick-Time-Events unique to each enemy type. Need more? It’s worth the price of admission just to control King Mickey as he flips around and beats the heck out of bosses, Yoda-style!
Platform: PS2
89. Fallout
This tongue-in-cheek post-apocalyptic RPG really succeeded in its bid to make you feel like you were roaming a nuclear-devastated world. One of the pioneers of the ‘be good or evil’ styles of open-world gameplay, you could do literally whatever you wanted to do. Be a saint and help people with their daily troubles? Nice. Kill an entire town? Hey, if you’ve got the heart to deal with the consequences, be my guest. The game used a turn-based combat system, using a combination of weapons, attributes, skills, traits, and perks to win the day. Oh, and one other thing—this game does NOT hold your hand. Right off the bat you are thrust from your underground vault into the desolate wasteland, with naught but a flask of water and your wits. There is no tutorial for combat or exploration, leaving you to learn to survive on your own. Now THAT’s what you call ‘hardcore.’
Platform: PC
88. Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
Unlike Square Enix’s other long-running fantasy series, Dragon Quest VIII maintains the sense of humor and wonder that got it where it is today. The silent protagonist, Hero, travels with his pet mouse, Munchie, and a cast of other colourful characters in a bid to take down the evil Dhoulmagus. The bright, cell-shaded art style and refreshing music only add to the charm of the simple turn-based combat. In addition to traditional experience points, Square added a secondary skill development system to allow the player to customize each character to their liking in the areas of weaponry, fisticuffs, and special attributes. The game world’s lush visuals are a joy to behold, making the game a must for any RPG- or adventure-lover.
Platform: PS2
87. Civilization 2
This turn-based strategy game spans several thousand years, beginning in 4000 BC and following human development closely. You begin a round of Civilization 2 as a tribe with no knowledge of the surrounding area, and must found new cities and explore the surroundings, encountering barbarians and other cultures. The player can sign a peace treaty with that culture, form a military alliance, or deploy any combination of 50 military units and crush them. Science, trade, technological advances, and keeping your people happy are the other orders of the day. Civilization 2 is considered by many to be the best strategy game of all time.
Platforms: PC, PS
86. World of Warcraft
Ah, yes, the quintessential MMO. Not much needs to be said here—the more than 11.5 million monthly subscribers are testimony enough to the game’s addictive qualities. The fourth game in the Warcraft franchise, WoW places players in the shoes of a member of the Horde or the Alliance, and puts them on a never-ending quest for better loot and higher levels. But it’s the social elements that really make WoW shine—if you want to take down one of the later bosses, you’d better be prepared to coordinate with 59 other guys of similar skill, or else you’ll find your soul wandering Azeroth in search of its body sooner than you may like.
Platform: PC
85. No More Heroes
“If I become number one, will you do it with me?” Such are the immortal words of No More Heroes’ nerd-rage-fuelled otaku, Travis Touchdown. The story goes thusly: One day, Travis goes to the video store to rent a movie, remembers he’s completely broke, and decides to become an assassin with the lightsaber*AHEM*Beam Katana he bought off the internet. He’s recruited to the 11th rank in the United Assassins’ Association, and is tasked with killing the top ten to increase his rank. He accomplishes this by driving around an open world on his motorcycle, the “Schpeltiger,” slicing enemies to bloody bits in a way that would make Quentin Tarantino’s jaw drop, and finishing them off with supermoves with such names as “Blueberry Cheese Brownie!” and “Strawberry on the Shortcake!” Of course, a fighter is only as good as his opponents, so watch out for the Shinobi named Shinobu and superhero wannabe Destroyman!
Platform: Wii
84. LittleBigPlanet
Media Molecule’s coming-out party is totally cute, completely unconventional, and just plain awesome. In this multiplayer platformer, creation and cooperation are key. Find something in one of the imaginative levels you don’t like? Show the developers how it’s done in the insanely well-featured Create Mode. In this mode, you can build an approximation of pretty much any sidescrolling game idea you want. Do you want tomake the player run from giant monsters? Fly on a magic carpet? Run from giant monsters WHILE flying on a magic carpet? You can do it, and with up to three friends, to boot! Once you’re satisfied, you can upload your creation to the Playstation Network and try the levels of others. Or you could just remake Contra .
Platform: PS3
83. Final Fantasy XII
The kingdom of Ivalice is in trouble (is there any other kind of kingdom in video games?). The Archadian empire is conquering the surrounding kingdoms, with the land of Rozarria rebelling against it and the kingdom of Dalmasca caught in between. A Dalmascan orphan named Vaan must rally a band of allies to reclaim their land and rise up against this tyranny. Typical stuff for a Japanese RPG, right? Where Final Fantasy XII differs the most from its predecessors is the real-time Active Dimension Battle (ADB) system, which eschews the series’ typical turn-based random battle system. Using techniques called ‘gambits’, AI characters can be told how to act in certain situations, such as healing when their HP is less than 30%, or focussing their attacks on a specific enemy. All in all, a terrific departure for the series that paid off in spades.
Platform: PS2
82. Super Smash Bros
Come on—you KNOW you remember it . Mario, Pikachu, Donkey Kong and Yoshi were walking along a nice, grassy field. All of a sudden, Mario randomly tripped Yoshi, and everyone started laying the smack down to the tune of “Happy Together”. Such was the backstory that kicked off one of the greatest fighting games of all time. Only Nintendo had a stable of legacy franchises big enough to justify this massive crossover beat-em-up. Far removed from the typical fighting game mold, Super Smash Bros. eschewed the traditional health bar for a percentage meter that went up the more damage a character took. The higher the damage meter, the farther they flew when hit by ‘smash’ attacks. Add in a who’s who of classic Nintendo characters and items, and you’ve basically got a cartridge full of unabashed fan service and addictive gameplay.
Platform: N64
81. Perfect Dark
There are many reasons why the Nintendo 64 is widely considered one of the best consoles ever made for multiplayer gaming, and Perfect Dark was one of them. The spiritual successor to Goldeneye 007, Perfect Dark took what that game did for console first-person shooters and multiplied it exponentially. The amazing single-player mode took full advantage of the required N64 Expansion Pak RAM cartridge, with expansive levels, great graphics, and intelligent AI for the time. All dialogue was fully voiced, and detailed cutscenes introduced and ended each level, a rarity for the platform. There was coop, sexy British spies, counter-operative mode (in which player 2 controlled the nameless thugs and attempted to thwart P1’s efforts), evil corporations that needed taking down, and, of course, aliens named Elvis. On the multiplayer side of things, Perfect Dark was revolutionary. Unlike Goldeneye, which only consisted of a free-for-all Deathmatch mode, Perfect Dark was endlessly customizable. King of the Hill with four players and twelve intelligent bots was the stuff of legends! Toss in the crazy weapons, such as the Farsight (which could track and shoot opponents through walls) and the remote controlled Devastator Rocket Launcher, and you’ve got yourselves a recipe for many sleepless nights!

Super Smash Bros and Perfect dark need to be about in the 60's. And WoW sucks.

What Kingdom Hearts 2 got beat by Super Smash 1 WTF!
KH2 over the original? Disagree with that. I'd also have put DQVIII and FFXII somewhere higher (in the range of 1-50, though DQVIII much higher than FFXII).
Aww, yeah NMH FTW
Civ 2 got 87? If it got rated that highly then Civ 1, 3 and 4 must be considerably higher. 2 wasn't great
FFXII > LBP???
MADNESS!!
the site could have just done this in alphabetical order ,but it wouldn't have created the buzz that this has.although come to think of it most of you would have argued over what alphabet to use, such as " the English alphabet put my game at a disadvantage"
yes everybodys top five games made into a top 100 ,why because our attention spans are the size of a gnats dick
of those 10 games i have play 4
lol I missed the voting too but man...how did Civ 2 end up so low ;P
Great list, but I think Final Fantasy XII should have got a better rank.
Am I the only one who thinks Perfect Dark is overrated? You could play it WITH the ram cart and the frame rate looked like dog turd. Normally I'm not a frame rate nut, but for shooters... very important.
Shame Elite, Grim Fandango or Daytona USA probably won't make the list :/
DQVIII and SSBB should be higher while NMH and LBP should be lower IMO.
@BenVTrigger
You are outnumbered everywhere, just take a look at the sales.
I predict we'll see very few xbox games on this list. After all we are VERY outnumbered on this site.
If i remember correctly by the time I moved on Perfect Dark I was the top rank and had played multi-player for over 9 days!
Ah, well isn't that exactly my point? I guess I didn't express myself too clearly, because you just listed two old games that did something entirely new for their time. o_O
@SHMUP
The difference is thaat memorable in more recent times doesn't mean it's better than what was done in olden times. I'd still take Deus Ex or Thief II over just abot any game out there today.
But Reasonable, are you saying that games that came out before weren't as innovative for their times than LBP and Portal? LBP and Portal needed those games in order to exist.
LBP is based on platformers and stage creator games. It didn't reinvent anything, because a lot of PC games did it in the past. It's just that instead of being an idea from a group of two people on the web, well, now it's commercialized and it's a Sony product.
Portal is based on first-person shooters and puzzle games. The idea of shooting a portal and creating puzzles is not new at all, it's just that now it's taken from the first-person perspective and it's a "Valve thing."
To me, some new games are praised way too much to deserve anything special, thus why their spots below the Top 50 makes sense.
Sure, we can argue about the fact that this is more like a popularity contest than anything else, but think about it a little. If some games are considered "above others," it's probably because they did something more memorable in the recent times to the gaming industry (or the whole entertainment industry as a whole) and the small portion of gamers on the Internet recognize this.
there is no way in hell ff12 can b above crono cross kh2 or dragon quest wat the hell
@outlawauron
denial, denial
i like no games in this day's part of the top 100...
Its flawed methodology to ask a group of people to each name their top 5 games then use the results of that to generate a top 100 list.
again some of those are toooo good be in the 89-80, LBP And WOW should be in the 20's
FF12 should be in the 20s or 30s. Civ2 should be top 10. No More Heroes I don't think should be on the list considering the games it is ahead.
@SHMUPGurus
but not in my opinion you see... hence while I might take a peek its clear I'll just find myself disagreeing mightily with what the majority have voted for.
Also, critically and for innovation titles like Portal and LBP destroy some of the other games placed higher, which is what matters more to me that popularity.
^CUZ FINAL FANTASY XII IS FUCKING AMAZING!
Ummmm, why is final fantasy XII up there?
Wow, most impressive list. A real walk down memory lane!

lol I notice the fanboys are out with their torches and pitchforks because their titles aren't as high as they wanted them to be. Apparently it's forgotten that opinions =/= fact.
Hell, I don't agree with some of this, but agree with other parts. No More Heroes was an excellent game, and probably half the people criticizing it's appearance haven't even played it/owned it (although this is very easy to deny). Decent list though.
The one list I do disagree with the most is the top 10 Gamecube titles list.
@ Tuoyo, apparently you don't know what unanimous means...
Why are some people surprised that LBP appeared already? There are far more better games already released than this one. Same goes for Portal.
I'm going to stop looking at the lists now. LBP too low and Portal even lower? I'll only end up arguing with people.
I might peek at number 1 - although I'm expecting Zelda to take that spot or Mario.
@ 11ht11
No More Heroes beating out MGS 2 and being next to LBP is proof enough that the site is dominant by Nintendo fans. The site has been like this since as long as I can remember.
Whilst all the games on the list are quality wow and civ are way too low. Especially wow.
Very surprised about no more heroes, as it isnt even among the top 10 Wii games. Does this mean that 10% of the best games of all time will be from wii?
Reading the comments I think it is almost unanimously agreed that No More Heroes does not in anyway deserve to be on this list.
No more heroes, really? :D
Ah! thanks for the link... so I did vote on this...
but it was only for 5 games... a bit short for best of all time :p
and of course nint will get the top spots... then again, the mario franchise is the only one deserving it...30 years of greatness...If it's something else, then the demographics of this site are probably younger than I thought (in the sense that they did not get to experience the mario days of old)
To be honest i hated sonic there was no skill! Give me mario anyday!
I dont think people should moan about the order... Its so spersific! Id have trouble doing the top ten let alone 100!
First two are Nintendo games, and are only the 82nd and 81st, i agree with Lafiel.
@ blaydcor )
lol, don't worry
some Nintendo game will be #1 - top 5 will likely contain Super Mario Galaxy, Zelda:Ocarina of Time and Super Mario 64
1 is gonna be a fight between a Final Fantasy (VI,VII,X) and Ocarina of Time.
People dont have the right to bitch. We all got a chance to vote lets just see what the VGC community thinks no 100 is ever right to anyone. I liked this idea and it fun to see what everyone thinks
LOL
sony fans are taking over the site
all the most popular games are always ps3 games, all the poll are in favor of sony
@ 11ht11
Nintendo fans --> Sony fans ----------> Microsoft fans --> PC fans.
@outlawauron
so whats the sites demographics?
I'm agree with all those tiltle. Everyone need to understand thant this is the list of 100 best game ever from thousandsss of games since Pong. So please don't complain. Every games in the list are great.
Wait wait wait.... You need 59 others to raid in WoW?
...
...
The lack of knowledge is absolutely apalling, not to mention that WoW should be in the top 20 by any measure.
wow these games are so good it will be interesting to see what makes it up even higher
The sites demographics are making this list really bad. No More Heroes is a good game, but not even in the top 200 games ever.
No More Heroes still awesome. Looking forward on next one. :)
No More Heroes Doesnt deserve to be in the top 100, not even top 200, good game .. but not ' BEST GAMES OF ALL TIME ' material ....
No more heroes is extremely questionable. You could say the same for LBP but at least it got 95% reviews on Metacritic.
What's with the No More Heroes hate? It's not even that high on the list and it is a good game in my opinion. Keyword - opinion. This list is all opinions. No list like this can ever be definitive. Just be glad that your favorite game gets the recognition it deserves out of the massive amount of games that have come out.
This all about confirms that the site's demographics are still the same as they were 1 year ago.
@ctk
All the members of the forums made the list. YOu have only yourself and your fellow members to blame ^^
Are you guys serious? Not to be disrespectful but who made this list?I mean it completely lost me by putting No more heroes that high.I mean that game was a good game but no were near the to 100 of all time there are tons and I mean tons of games that are superior than no more heroes in all aspects.
/rant.
I still play perfect dark to this day. over 120 hours i have put into it. an amazing game that still plays well to this day. way ahead of its time!
I can't believe some of the games No More Heroes beat out. =/
Great that FFXII "only" came on spot nr 83, no matter how the rest of the list goes I won't care beacuse atleast it won't be any higher :-)
haha
No More Heroes better than Civ 2?
"the remote controlled Devastator Rocket Launcher"
Incorrect - you're thinking of the slayer. The devestator was just a grenade launcher as I recall.
Lol @ WoW being in there as well as LBP. Those two games deserve to be higher up. Not my cup of tea. :-) Those poor souls who play WoW...FFXI just past 2 million for its population, because you can do more with just one character. Blizzard may have each character as one person...how sad.
-
Sonic the Hedgehog
0_o
yeah civilization forever great choice, with perfect dark are my 2 favorites of this list.
@KylieDog: Six out of these 10 were from previous generations.
wow i love seeing NMH,LBP,SSB, And perfect dark in there
CIV2. That defined pc gaming for me.
yay, Little Big Planet!
I don't get what people see in Smash Bros, the most entertainment I got from that game was the baseball thing. Otherwise, it's utterly tedious. Ho hum. WoW's placing really shows the predomination of console users on this site.
I'm gonna be pretty furious if that cloud-silhouette is foreshadowing
And again thanks, this time to thekitchensink.
Again nice list, very good games... Although surprised to have seen Chrono, KH 1&2 and FF12 this early on.
FF12 being in that list makes it a bad list IMO...
Little big planet has sold like 2million copies, and nobody cares about it anymore. I have it and its a great game, but it is not one of the top 10 of all time or anything. If anyone is truly upset, just remember not everyone is you, and other people like and voted for different games.
LBP already? Dayum. If suikoden ain't in the 60s, it will be rather dissapointing..(for me,that is).
Shenmue better end up on the list at some point.
WOOT! some Final Fantasy XII love! damn straight!
No More Heroes is a popular cult game, especially on this site. It's still a pretty good game although not in the same league as the other games mentioned here.
No More Heroes eh? That's a pleasant surprise. :-)
Still no sightings of Sonic 2, 3, & Knuckles. That's either good... or not so good. :-(
no more heroes just ruined this list...
Y'know, I don't care which games make the list or what order they're in as long as they all deserve to be there.
But No More Heroes isn't even a good game.
Well, that's probably the only gripe I'll have with this list. Keep it coming :)
No More Heroes within 4 places of Perfect Dark? Is this a joke? If both were people No More Heroes would not even be worthy enough to clean Perfect Dark's toilet.
Now I remember this thread... But really, CIv 2 should be higher...
the countdown was good so far until i saw FFXII :P
I personally would have Perfect Dark alot higher on my list, back then the internet wasnt in full swing and I thought the game was just about a secret agent the twists and turns that came with the alien enemy really blew my mind, and its still one of the best multiplayer games even today. I'm also glad No more Heros got a mention.
i say at least 60 of the 100 games are PS titles..yeaaah!
I'm surprised to see No More Heroes on this list.....
Nice to see No more Heroes love. Cult classics being recognized is pretty rare.
what everyone have to remember is that in list like these you could just as well take a way the number infront of every game and just list them as the 100 best games ever. Its not a competition just a list
Kingdom hearts 2 at 90? WTH LBP? Mhm..
Perfect Dark has 8 Bots + 4 Humans (in splitscreen) = 12 players max.
No More Heroes! That game was really great; the sequel will be Excellent.
As for those complaining, if you didn't vote, you can't complain.
No more heroes ? What the hell !
Looks good other than that, MGS 2 should've been much higher though.
I really don't understand how people could have missed the voting. It was stickied for way over a month and we even had an advertisement for it on the front page for a long while.
OK, Mario is still higher. :-)
Nice. I'm so happy they put Fallout in there. I love that game. The second ones a bit better though. :O
There's no denying that every game that's on the list so far is excellent. I'm not disappointed at all (yet :-P)
All of these games are better than Sonic the Hedgehog? You learn something new every day.
The list looks good.
Great job VGChartz, can't wait for the next 10 :)
