VGC Special: Top 10 Dreamcast Games - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 13 April 2009 / 113,223 Views

The SEGA Dreamcast, a system that many would say was way ahead of its time and a system many would argue was taken from us far too young. Before it was cool to participate in online gaming on a console, Dreamcast had it. Before it was cool to speak to your games, Dreamcast had a microphone. Because of a grand list of shenanigans on everyone’s part, the Dreamcast crumbled due to the unstoppable juggernaut that was the PS2. Love it or hate it, Sega’ s last hurrah was an innovative system with its share of great games. The following is a top ten list hand picked by our very own staff to crown the 10 best Dreamcast games of all time.

10. Marvel VS Capcom 2

When Capcom originally announced the Marvel vs. Capcom series in the form of Street Fighter vs. X-men way back in the day, many scoffed at it – that was, until anyone played it. The game was surprisingly balanced, and really fun for fans of 2-d fighting games. Flash forward to the fourth and final game in the series, and you have one of the most loved fighting games to come out last generation. Of the three home versions of the game (X-box, PS2 and DC) The Dreamcast version is the closest of the three home console ports to the arcade version, due to its hardware being similar to that of a NAOMI arcade motherboard. If there was a definitive home version of Marvel vs Capcom 2, it was the Dreamcast Version.

9. Skies of Arcadia

In the age-old argument of who would win between pirates and ninjas, I feel that one fact is left untouched. Sky Pirates and Spaces Pirates respectively must be getting the job done somewhere, because have you ever heard of sky ninjas? No you haven’t because the sky pirates killed them all. One of the best games to feature sky pirates is probably Skies of Arcadia, and outstanding Dreamcast RPG. The story in Skies of Arcadia focuses around Vyse, a young sky pirate in a Jules Verne-inspired fantasy world, and his friends as they attempt to stop the Valuan Empire from reviving ancient weapons with the potential to destroy the world. The game was later ported to the Gamecube, but the true version of the game was the original.

8. Power Stone

When I think about the Power Stone franchise, on thing comes to mind. No, it isn't that terrible anime they made ten years ago. What comes to mind is innovation. Most fighting games feature a one-on-one contest between two opponents.  Power Stone adds to this formula by giving you the ability to pick up and fight with such objects as tables, chairs, rocks and bombs. Power Stone was one of the first fighting games to implement a free roaming fighting experience with weapons in the environment, and do it well. Power Stone lives on in various other systems, but if you help it seek out the original.

7. Jet Grind Radio

Cel-shading may be passé today, and even scoffed at by some, but in 1999 it was amazingly revolutionary, and no other game did cel-shading like Jet Grind Radio. The game itself tells a bizarre story of a skater named Beat trying to use tagging and skating as a form of self-expression in a dystopian world, where that isn’t allowed. Jet Grind Radio also featured a fairly well reviewed soundtrack featuring many popular pop, techno and even rock songs to assist you on your voyage to fight the man.

6. Sonic Adventure

It had to happen, there had to be a Sonic game on our list. Sonic Adventure is arguably the best 3-d Sonic game on the market according to fans of the series. Not only was the game well received, but it still holds the crown for the best selling Dreamcast game. The game itself added a lot of needed storyline to the series, including a new net of Chaos Emeralds that Dr. Eggman is still trying to collect. This was helped by the game featuring six playable characters, and different storylines for each character as they progress through the game. You can still find the Gamecube directors cut for Sonic Adventure hanging around some used game stores if you look real hard, or try to find the Dreamcast original. Its pretty easy to find.

5. Shenmue

When many think of the Dreamcast, one game comes to mind – Shenmue. Shenmue had many features completely unheard of at the time of release. Yu Suzuki, the creator of the game, coined a genre that he called "FREE" meaning Full Reactive Eyes Entertainment at the time of release. B this genre was based on the interactivity and freedom he wanted to give to the player. Suzuki intended to achieve this by simulating aspects of real life through the game, such as the day/night/sleep system, and real time variable weather effects unheard of in a game of this kind at the time. Shenmue plays out a lot like a typical adventure game, but aspects of the FREE system make the game immensely more immersive.
Closing words: Do you know where I can find some sailors?

4. Sonic Adventure 2

Look what we have here! Sonic is pulling double duty on our list! Sonic Adventure 2 picks up right where the first game left off as Dr. Eggman has a new plan to take over the world, and enslave all of the little animals he can. Sonic Adventure 2 is notable because it had 2 storylines, one good and one evil as well as a few new characters. This game introduces two new playable characters, Shadow the Hedgehog and Rouge the Bat, and is also one of the few Sonic games to officially feature Doctor Eggman as a playable character in the evil mode. Most will have become entranced with this game due to its later release on the Nintendo Gamecube, but it still holds it roots on the Dreamcast.

3. Soul Calibur

The follow up to Soul Edge/Soul Blade was a big surprise, and is still looked at as one of the best fighting games of all time, only bested by its eventual sequel Soul Calibur 2. Sporting a healthy dose of weapons based combat; this is the fighting game that many franchises wanted to be last generation. Some franchises tried it and failed (see Mortal Kombat 4) but Soul Calibur pulled it off. Hosting a bizarre cast of characters including everything from a lizard man, to a bondage aficionado with a creepy gimp mask, this game has it all. The game takes place three years after the events in Soul Edge/ Soul Blade. The legendary sword, the Soul Edge uses Siegfried as its host, and now Siegfried is Nightmare, a knight wearing Demonic armor. A new group of heroes has banded together to stop Nightmare’s slaughter.

2. Crazy Taxi

If there was any profession that I would not have imagined as a playable videogame, Taxicab driver would definitely be one of them. Sure we have Mario as a plumber, and Paperboy, but who would imagine driving a taxi would be so fun. Crazy Taxi was so popular that it not only got ports to other systems, but started a new genre basically, one that we can clearly see in the Simpson’s Road rage. The main objective of the game is to pick up customers and take them to their chosen destination as fast as possible. While this sounds easy, well you haven’t played Crazy Taxi.

1. Resident Evil: Code Veronica

Here it is folks! and this might be a huge surprise to everyone. The staff here at VGChartz has designated Resident Evil: Code Veronica as our favorite Dreamcast game of all time. Hot of the heels of the release of Resident Evil 5, it’s cool to see one of the older games get some recognition, especially since this is easily the most overlooked game in the series. The game carries over everything that made resident Evil 3 such a success like the 180 degree turn, as the two games were created at the same time, but Code veronica is the first game in the series to use fully 3d backgrounds, and not pre-rendered mattes. The game is set three months after the events depicted in Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. The plot moves away from Raccoon City and onto Rockfort Island, a solitary private isle owned by the Umbrella Corporation. The game also features appearances from Claire Redfield, and Albert Wesker.

jeffrey9999 (on 26 April 2009)

I hate to break it to all the people who act like they played shenmue but It wasn't even close to being a good game and everyone hated it and it got BAD reviews.......

  • 0
jeffrey9999 (on 26 April 2009)

that's a good point phantasy star should be on this list........

  • 0
jeffrey9999 (on 26 April 2009)

I don't agree with this list at all crazy-taxi jet-grind-radio are BAD GAMES and shenmue wasn't no saving grace for the dreamcast although It was O-K with an average review of a 6.5out of 10.......... Dead or alive 2 should be on their, MDK2 should be on their and it stands for (MAX)(DOCTOR)(KIRK)2, ultimate fighting championship COULD be on their and YES it was a much better game on dreamcast then the original PS1 version it was like they were 2 completly different games altogether, (soldier of fortune) SHOULD be on their and the list goes on........ I could take almost every game on this list and replace it with a better Dreamcast game, this list looks like a bunch of popular and memorable and most advertised dreamcast games, crazy taxi was a o-k game and it was an arcade game it wasn't even close to being as good as NFL2K..........BAD LIST and how about vertua tennis? that was better then "SHENMUE" and it even got much better REVIEWS..........

WOW.. I still have 7 of the top 8(no Sonic 2 for me) games on this list. Dreamcast has some great games. Me and my friends got sooooo good at powerstone that the battles were really intense.

Cueil (on 21 April 2009)

There is a reason RE:CV wins... Claire Redfield and the opening CG... Plus wasn't it one of the first games to use dynamic lighting?

mouse_clicker, Toy Commander ROCKED!!! I forgot all about that game. I actually got a free copy for review for bolt.com. I absolutely loved it. The sense of scale was perfect.

When I saw shenmueon 5th place this thread lost all the credibility.

Where is Ikaruga, Grandia II, Phantasy Star Online? Why is Crazy Taxi #2?

  • 0

Soul Calibre is easy #1 IMO.

  • 0
concity06 (on 17 April 2009)

I loved my Sega Dreamcast!! I wish it didn't break down on me. Code Veronica shouldn't be #1 though, I mean come on. I have RE: Code Veronica still in my house, and I remember playing it. It's a good game, but their are better. Sonic Adventure, Marvel vs Capcom, Jet Grind Radio, House of Pain, NFL 2K2, Soul Caliber are better games.

  • 0
kutasek (on 16 April 2009)

Code Veronica is on 1st place, i thought it was really average RE game. Story saved it. From being almost annoying, you are backtracking so much in this game.

  • 0
mouse_clicker (on 16 April 2009)

Also, I'm surprised no one has mentioned this game: Toy Commander. I can't tell you how many sleepless nights my friends and I had playing that game.

Oh and Ecco The Dolphin deserves some credit! As does Chu Chu Rocket. Dreamcast is great in general.

  • 0
DXPhins1 (on 16 April 2009)

Hmm, my top 10 would probably be:

  1. Shenmue
  2. Jet Grind Radio
  3. Sonic Adventure
  4. Soul Calibur
  5. Crazy Taxi 1 & 2 (they can go together)
  6. Ooga booga
  7. House of the Dead II
  8. Phantasy Star Online
  9. Skies of Arcadia
  10. NFL 2K2 & Tennis 2K2 (All the 2K games were pretty good)

Fond memories of the DC, loved it.!!!!!!!

Can't believe MSR is not on the list!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was mega, and IMO reinvented the racing genre, amazing graphics, huge choice of tracks and KUDOS for the first time ever. MSR rocked.

Code veronica was OUTSATNDING!!

Soul Caliber best fighting game of it's time and still right up there.

Also loved "furr fighters"

Dreamcast RIP!XXXXX

@disolitude: Okay, that makes sense then. I had completely forgotten about 0, too.

  • 0
mrn (on 16 April 2009)

I REFUSE TO ACCEPT A LIST WITHOUT CHU CHU ROCKET.

Speaking of it, don't you think it'd be a great time for a Chu Chu Rocket relaunch? It's been almost eight years since the last version (GBA), and broadband connections combined with more developer experience in online games could make it much more enjoyable for online play. Heck, they don't even need to produce new stuff; just tweak the graphics (based on the more cartoonish GBA version) and the netplay code, and release it as a $10 WiiWare. Let the users do the stage building, as it was on the Dreamcast.

It could also do wonders on both PSP and DS, as they have much better input methods than the GBA and good online connectivity. Heck, I think this generation as a whole is the very perfect time for CCR…

@mouse_clicker

After RE CV we had the remake and resident evil Zero... Not talking about RE4...but proper resident evil game :P

RE4 is amazing but it really isn't resident evil old school fans grew up with.

  • 0
DanBal76 (on 15 April 2009)

Good list, but is lacked, in my opinion of course, Grandia 2 and Dead or Alive 2. Dreamcast was awesome, but short lived as we all know.

  • 0
mouse_clicker (on 15 April 2009)

@ disolitude: "All I know is that RE1 was my favourite game of they year when it came out...same with RE2 same with RE3 and same with CV... after that, the series started to stagnate."

Wait, what? What came after CV in that series? RE4 and then RE5. And RE4 was the best in the series since at least RE2, if you ask me. That's like saying "When Raiders of the Lost Ark came out, it was my favorite movie of the year. Same with Temple of Doom, same with Last Crusade... after that, the series started to stagnate."

  • 0
disolitude (on 15 April 2009)

@321
Dino crisis 2? that is PS1 exclusive my friend. Good game tho...

  • 0
321tttrini4everz (on 15 April 2009)

no dino crisis 2 = everything fails on this list

  • 0
disolitude (on 15 April 2009)

@KylieDog

I don't need opinion from RE hardcore fanbase to know RE:CV was one of the best DC games.

Reason why the next 2 games were static backgrounds was because one was a remake and was purposely trying to stay true to its roots and the other had development started on n64 well before Code Veronica was being created for DC. And as you know N64 didn't have the 3D capabilites to push full 3d environments.

All I know is that RE1 was my favourite game of they year when it came out...same with RE2 same with RE3 and same with CV... after that, the series started to stagnate.

Its a shame because the mess that RE5 has become is something no one could predict back when RE was on top of the survival horror genre.

  • 0
Doczu (on 15 April 2009)

@GooseGaws
Ok, the game had a few annoying flaws (the combat system, no facial animation), but aside that - it was a decend, quite funny and an original game (searching traps and hidden items was a nice addon).

So for me it is a game worth having in your collection :)

  • 0
Chris Hu (on 15 April 2009)

Nice list I own seven of the top ten and used to own eight. Shenmue should be #1 on the list though.

  • 0
GhaudePhaede010 (on 15 April 2009)

Ok so... I noticed Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver not on this list I cried a little inside.

If only because a Resident Evil game, that should be like... number 10 at best, is number one. Soul Reaver was innovation. And no PSO? There is a line here, and you guys well crossed it. This list is amazing fail.

  • 0
xander1062 (on 15 April 2009)

I loved Sonic Adventure 2- scratch that! I still do! I have it for Dreamcast and Gamecube... but I REALLY need to get a hold of SKYS OF ARCADIA.

WAIT!??!! Where's TYPING OF THE DEAD?!! Why isn't that on the list???!

  • 0
Madanial (on 15 April 2009)

Where's PSO???

  • 0

No PSO? No Grandia 2? Fail

Any one here beat the game called Blustinger here?

  • 0
GooseGaws (on 15 April 2009)

Wow... I was just playing some Space Channel 5, and I had forgotten how much better Part 2 is than the first. It is SO MUCH BETTER.

If you haven't played the sequel, then my friends, you haven't lived.

  • 0
disolitude (on 15 April 2009)

@KylieDog

For every point you are arguing RE:CV is a stap backwards for the series...most people think its an improvement.

Like less detailed backgrounds. Are you kidding me? a 640x480 static picture is more detailed than fully rendered 3D environemnts? Makes the first 3 RE games look completely dead when it comes to environments.

Camera movement > low res picture of a moose head any day.

Also, the bonus game is great. FPS RE mode...what more do you want?

Steve sucked yes...but alexia and her brother were great villans.

All the ammo stuff is completely irrelevant. Back then RE was a survival horror game so the fact that you had 18 magnum bullets really didn't take anything away from the game. While we are talking about weapons...the new guns such as the Uzis which let you aim in different direction were awesome at the time.

The bottom line is that RE:CV had more of everything. More varity with enemies you fight and environments, game was atealst twice as long as RE3, more boss battles, better story. It was RE going next gen...and next time it went "next gen" with part 4...it wasnt the same game anymore.

  • 0
Infinity (on 15 April 2009)

snesfan and others are right. It is too difficult to make a top ten list when the Dreamcast had so many great games. It really is the best console of all time. And FYI to all Power Stone 1 and 2 rule, Marvel VS Capcom 2 sucks ballz. (MvC 1 is good though)

  • 0
ToastyJaguar (on 14 April 2009)

after reading this i went and bought a few games on that list, some i traded in back in my stupid youth days. good stuff :)

  • 0
elprincipe (on 14 April 2009)

Definitely missing Typing of the Dead, Record of Lodoss War and Tennis 2K2 from the list. I'd have Jet Grind Radio as #1, a game that really surprised me with how awesome it is (I really wasn't expecting a lot and it's won its way into my heart as the best Dreamcast game).

  • 0
HanzoTheRazor (on 14 April 2009)

Code Veronica rocked, and, so too Soul Reaver, Shadowman and the rare Lodoss Wars, also.

  • 0
GooseGaws (on 14 April 2009)

@madman25:

Wow... most of the people who played the game with me thought she was kind of hot, what with her short skirts and sassy attitude. I guess we travel in different circles. :)

  • 0
madman25 (on 14 April 2009)

@GooseGaws
Everytime I got someone to play Space Channel 5 it got the same reaction: 'It's suuuper camp, Ulala is a drag queen.' It made it even more fun. Space Michael Jackson dancing around with kiddies was very wrong...he can molest little aliens all he wants, just keep him away from the kiddies!
Can SEGA please start bringing some of these classic DC games to XBLA/PSN already! We've had Soul Calibur & Rez so far but it's not enough!

  • 0
GooseGaws (on 14 April 2009)

@Doczu:

Wow, that might be the first time I've heard anyone refer to Illbleed as a "really good game." The most insane game ever, perhaps, but that doesn't really make it good... (though I suppose it did keep me playing to the end just to see what bizarre stuff they'd come up with next, and the trailer was one of the best ever)

@madman25:

Did... did you just call Ulala a drag queen? BLASPHEMY!! Now, Space Michael Jackson, well... ;)

  • 0
madman25 (on 14 April 2009)

My beloved Dreamcast. More or less everything already mentioned plus some of my personal faves:

PSO- Hands down THE most addictive game i've ever played.

Space Channel 5- Crazy, fun.World's first drag queen simulator? lol

Metropolis Street Racer- The birth of PGR.Beautiful racing game.

Ecco:Defender of the Future- Loved everything about this.More like an interactive toy really.Stunning underwater environments.Tom Baker added so much class as narrator.Great soundtrack too.

MDK2- Crazy, inventive sci-fi action adventure.

Fur Fighters- Lovable characters that dished out the violence. The game world was pretty huge with lots to unlock/explore.

Wacky Racers- Fun cel shaded vehicular combat with spot-on sound effects.

Rayman 2- Awesome port of N64 version. Time to kill the rabbids and work on a new 'real' game!

  • 0
amp316 (on 14 April 2009)

Overall a good list. It's hard to make a top ten for the Dreamcast since so many good games were on it. I personally would put House of the Dead 2 and Samba De Amigo on it but that's just me.

  • 0
Badassbab (on 14 April 2009)

Oh and Metropolis Street Racer lol

  • 0

  • 0
mjk45 (on 14 April 2009)

one word, maybe two, record of lodoss war, i love my loyal stupid goblin army and if they had voted record of lodoss war would be number one, then again being very stupid they probably get confused between dc and pc and voted for diablo

nomorehalo (on 14 April 2009)

Sega should make a Dreamcast collection now; they've sucked the life out of the Genesis, and there's so many games on that system many haven't played.

  • 0
highwaystar101 (on 14 April 2009)

Shenmue still looks graphically good :-)

  • 0

Some great classics in this list! Sega bring some of them to the PSN and MS stores!

  • 0
arsenal009 (on 14 April 2009)

Terrible list! Grandia 2 & Skies should be the top 2 titles! And Sega GT & Marvel vs SNK need to be on that list as well!

  • 0
SnesTea (on 14 April 2009)

Dreamcast has too many great games to make a Top 10.

  • 0
OmegaRugalv3 (on 14 April 2009)

Lots of problems with this list. Sonic Adventure 2 was not better than Sonic Adventure 1, Marvel vs Capcom 2 losing to ... Power Stone?!?!? ...

Shenmue 1 is there ... but where is the superior part 2?

my list

  1. Shenmue 2
  2. RE Code Veronica
  3. Marvel vs Capcom 2
  4. Soul Calibur
  5. King of Fighters 99 Dreammatch (was really kof 98)
  6. Sonic Adventure 1
  7. Capcom vs Snk 2
  8. Skies of Arcadia
  9. Shenmue 1
  10. Crazy Taxi
  • 0
Ryudo (on 14 April 2009)

I still play my DC from time to time as it still hooked up and still have a brand new one in it's box as insurance. Shenmue is my fave game of all time and DC is my fave system ever.

Should be easy to guess where I got my user handle from. So many awesome games in such a short time span.

  • 0
torpid616 (on 14 April 2009)

You guys are totally missing one of the most innovative and hilarious typing games, The Typing of the Dead, a complete hack of House of the Dead 2. I have yet to find a more fun typing game, and it was a shame it didn't get more exposure. Put that keyboard to good use!

  • 0
Sapphire (on 14 April 2009)

Grandia 2 should be on the list
Shenmue should be higher
and what the hell Jet Grind Radio???

  • 0
r3av3r2k1 (on 14 April 2009)

the number of great games that didn't make the top 10 just makes people realize that in just a 2 years life cycle dreamcast was a software beast something most successful consoles cant put out in 4 or 5 years dreamcast made in 2

  • 0
cochise313 (on 14 April 2009)

i think my favorite game on dreamcast was phantasy star online. online gaming at its finest lol. i remeber those people who use to use the gameshark to kill other players

  • 0

Not having Grandia 2 on the list is tragic. That's my favorite RPG of all time.

  • 0

I like the list. Although Army Men Sarges Heroes was really fun in multiplayer.

  • 0
Doczu (on 14 April 2009)

Hey, where's HoTD2? :(
I think everyone has a personal Top10 list of Dreamcast games, so why all those quarrels? Make your own :)

  1. Vigilante 8: 2nd offence
  2. Power Stone
    8 HoTD2
  3. Illbleed (really good game)
  4. Shenmue II
  5. Crazy Taxi
  6. Sonic Adventure (1&2)
  7. Headhunter
  8. Soul Calibur
  9. Shenmue

RE:CV is not on my list, because i bought it for my Gamecube (which i had before the DC).

  • 0
decrot (on 14 April 2009)

it should be

  1. Power stone 2
  2. MvsC2
  3. Power Stone
  4. Shenmue
  5. House of the Dead 2 (only with gun)
  6. Soul Calibur

and all the sonic games suck

  • 0
RubyEclipse (on 14 April 2009)

Hooray for Dreamcast. :)

RE was good, but I personally spent a lot more time playing games like Chu Chu Rocket and PSO - so many thousands of hours spent, but definitely not wasted.

  • 0
averyblund (on 14 April 2009)

A great list. Its amazing how hard it is to boil it down to the top 10. Here are some contenders-
-any Sega Sports game

  • Crazy Taxi 2
-House of the Dead/Typing of the Dead
    -Quake 3
    -Unreal Tournament
    -Headhunter
    -MDK 2
    -Furry Fighters
    -Tony Hawk 2

God Sony pissed me off when they buried this system with their Emotion Engine BS. Sure it might have happened anyway. But lying about "Toy Story" graphics just to kill a competitor is evil.

  • 0

IMO

Sonic Adventure 1>>>>>>Sonic Adventure 2, but whatever.

Good selection of games overall.

  • 0
Boberman (on 14 April 2009)

MvC2 is the main reason I own a DC. That game is awsome.

Crazy taxy is awsome as well but since I got used to abusing the arcade, the home port never felt right so I think those 2 games should swap spots :D

  • 0
Jumpin (on 14 April 2009)

I have never finished Code Veronica, I got up to Alexia, but couldn't get past that fight. Sonic Adventure 1 and 2.... I don't know how 1 can be argued to be better than 2, other than it was more original; so I don't see the complaint here.

  • 0
Jumpin (on 14 April 2009)

The first Soul Calibur for Dreamcast is still easily the best of the franchise. Skies of Arcadia is still my favourite. I played the Dreamcast version 4 times through, the GC one after only once, but I am probably going to play through it again soon. As I mentioned earlier, I didn't have a Gamecube, my old roommate did; so I didn't really have full access to SoA GC until I got a Wii.

How no one has mentioned MDK 2 is beyond me; Bioware made third person heaven verses those Sonic games, both of which suck, is lame. Your list needs fixin.

Sonic Adventure is arguably the best 3D Sonic, but Sonic Adventure 2 placed two higher.

Makes sense. :p

Yeah, I guess, so I just thought MvC2 was way more beloved.

But I looked up a couple things and I was slightly wrong on the ebay thing.

Metacritic Dreamcast MvC2 = 90
Metacritic Dreamcast Power Stone = 87

As for ebay, I found Power Stone in an eBay store for 34 dollars and MvC2 ran anywhere from 40 to 100 dollars (with no bids) so I was wrong about that. Oddly enough the Xbox version of Marvel fetches the most?? WTF... I remember paying 80 dollars for it used at gamestop when it was released for backwards compatibility and then finding out it was too glitchy to play and taking it back. Still, how many people would pay 80 dollars for a used copy of Power Stone after already owning it twice for two different systems?

Whatever, the list isn't about my preferences, I realize that. Sorry for the hassle. I'm just so passionate about that damn game.

I just remembered the reason I had my PS2 for about 6 months before I actually touched it. You had to love the Dreamcast....Mine is still thinking!

@JPL78

I think below shows the difference between the 2.

Powerstone = fun for everyone
Marvel VS Capcom 2 = fun for me, you and a lot of hardcore gamers, but not for people that didn't play many fighting games.

Saying we are all saying I like this game it should be on the list. So what? My point was Powerstone is NO WHERE near as loved as MvC2 would ever be. People pay top dollar on ebay for a copy of that. Not to mention it say rerelease on PS2 and Xbox and STILL people beg for a sequel or Xbox live arcade version. It is a fanboy favorite and on many peoples best games ever list.

Are you honestly saying Powerstone tops that? Cause I seem to remember playing Powerstone for a little while, being like, yeah it's alright and then all my friends unanimously agreeing, let's play MvC2... again... for the 8th month in a row. I also don't remember Powerstone being half as loved or praised by the gaming media (this article aside).

I don't claim my opinion as fact only opinion but I think a lot of people would agree, Powerstone is crap compared to MvC2. Regardless of the innovation.

I also agree that Code Veronica was top notch for a Resident Evil game back then. Made my anti-sega friend go out and buy a dreamcast lol.

Good list. I'd put Shenmue a bit higher simply for the impact it had...

Anyone saying RE:code veronic is crap doesn't know what they are talking about. It came out 6 months after RE3 and was such a huge leap in visual and presentation quality while retaining the same classic gameplay that it deserves to be on the list. Maybe not at number 1 though...

Nevertheless...this is the reason wny I come to this site. You guys give love to great fallen brothers like the dreamcast...

My favourites are:

  1. Sonic Adventure
  2. Shenmue 2
  3. Shenmue
  4. Crazy Taxi
  5. Virtua tennis 2
  6. Sega Rally 2
  7. Phantasy Star Online
  8. Skies of Arcadia
  9. Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future
  10. Crazy Taxi 2

Dreamcast was the only Console, i get on the releaseday, and i never had a bad second with it. But Playstation 2 had DVD and so Sega was killed in 2002. Hope for a Comeback in 2010, when PS 3 is beiing taken away from the Market. :-)

I am surprised that Sony, Nintendo, or Microsoft didn't end up buying up SEGA while they were down after the Dreamcast stopped. If you look at their catalog they have some great IP's that could be made. I'd like to see a fan list of favorite SEGA IP's that they should update and bring back.
Games I would like to see would be Shenmue, Panzer Dragoon, Alex Kidd, Streets of Rage, and Altered Beast

Skies of Arcadia remains my favourite game to date. I have the GC version, but since I didn't want a GC, my roommate at the time had one. I have a Wii now, so I can play that version all I want now. Which is better? The GC version is all improvements; but the DC version is the original.

DP

This system could have still been running along side the PS2 now if fortunes for Sega went a little better.

Some brilliant games on that system, skies of arcadia was brilliant, the way you could upgrade your ship :). My brother loved shenmue. Crazy taxi was always a hoot!

Shenmue should be on number 1 spot. Hell Shenmue must be number 1 spot on the list of best game ever. So number 5 is too low for me in this list.

The Dreancast in our Dorm was running every Night. We played alot of Virtua Tennis 2K2 with four players. We had tournaments over the weekends with >12 people. This was a great experience and it is still reference in this genre. By the way virtua tennis was good, but 2K2 was the more polished experience. Soul Calibur was a smash hit for mulitplayer too.
In single player i liked best: Skies of Arkardia, SA2 and Shenmue.
Too bad, never had Grandia 2.
By the way, i would love a Shenmue 3 and a Skies of Arkardia 2. I would buy every system, just to play Shemue 3 ;).

I'm not that big a videogame sports fan, but the first 2 NFL 2k's should be any DC best games list.

Very nice selection of games.Code Veronica is the best RE game ever!!Shenmue 2 and Grandia 2 should have made it also.Dreamcast is still my favorite console of all times!

  • 0
Ronster316 (on 14 April 2009)

Swap number 5 with number 1 and the list will look a lot better.

Code veronica is one of if not THE weakest resident evil games (along with RE zero).

Shenmue is a MASTERPIECE and should be in the number 1 slot.

Its a shame that Metropolis street racer didn't make the list, i still rate that higher than any PGR game.

And Virtua tennis is THE premier tennis franchise still to this day so that would have made it in my top 10 easily.
