The VGChartz Gap charts are updated monthly and each article focuses on a different gap chart. The charts include comparisons between the 7th generation and 8th generation platforms, as well as comparisons within the 8th generation. All sales are worldwide, unless otherwise stated.

This monthly series compares the combined aligned sales of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One with the combined aligned sales of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

 

The gap grew in favor of the combined sales PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 when compared to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in the last month by 562,936. In the last 12 months the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have increased the lead by 2.15 million units. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One lead by a combined 24.73 million units.

The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in their first 56 months sold a combined 94.91 million units, while the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have sold a combined 119.64 million units.

Gap change in latest month: 562,936 – PS3 & X360

Gap change over last 12 months: 2,150,903 - PS4 & XOne

Total Lead: 24,732,533 – PS4 & XOne

Total Combined PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 Sales: 94,908,251

Total Combined PlayStation 4 and Xbox One Sales: 119,640,784

sony has beat microsoft in total consoles sold for every generation even the PS3 which was thought to be dead before 2009 and ended up picking up so much steam it caught up
Next gen will be a nice race to watch

Looking like it's about to level out and the gap might start closing. I think this is about where the Kinect would release for 360, things could get interesting soon. With both PS4 and XB1 past their prime, and XB1 not likely to contribute all that much more to the total, and the successors to probably be releasing in a couple of years, this might be much closer than we expect it to be.

I believe PS2 + XBox is more comparable to PS4 + XBox1. The PS3 + XBox360 has a lower total, because some of these people bought a Wii instead.

PS2+XBOG is only 9 million higher than PS3+360. As such, either comparison would be interesting, but I'd rather see PS3+360 because it shows a more relevant trend of the two most closely competing consoles.

Likely finish it’s LT sales at ~30 million less than either PS3 or 360, these numbers bode very well for PS4’s LT sales.
