Preliminary Killzone 2 Sales - over 750,000 sold - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 01 March 2009 / 71,651 Views

Brett Walton
1st March 2009

VGChartz has today released preliminary data which suggests that Killzone 2 has already passed the 750,000 sales mark since launch. This would put the game third behind Grant Theft Auto 4 and Metal Gear Solid 4 in the list of fastest sellers on the PS3.

Early reports from retailers also suggest that there was "only a modest" increase in sales of PS3 hardware from the release of Killzone 2 but this was to be expected since Killzone 2 is selling primarily to existing PS3 owners and the true effect on hardware sales will only been seen over the next few weeks.

750 K and posted 720k in Chartz, Well as i had expected!! Well it will pick up in the following weeks to come and Yakuza at No.2 another title that is spinning money for sony...sort of making up for KZ 2's expected 1mn.

  • 0
alera (on 05 March 2009)

Great game even I will admit that and I am playing it. Like I have said before though its not enough to dig Sony out of the hole they are in with the ps3. This game was needed 2 years ago at the end of the day.

  • 0
Gohan (on 03 March 2009)

I was expecting more, a LOT more. of this is the best Sony can do give it a day or whatever, then its simply not good enough.

Gears 2 and Halo both did 2.5 million on its first day. a lot of that had to do with pre-orders. but my local shop said they had no pre-orders. and they still have many copies in stock at the end of the day. so its not sold out.
I was hoping for at least twice that much around 1.5 million.
which meant Sony lied about the 1 million pre-orders like they did with LBP.
I'll still enjoy it, but I was expecting a lot more.

  • 0
GameAnalyser (on 03 March 2009)

@aznable
Well did i imply that killzone 2 with comparitively much larger userbase would ever cross 2mn in others? not with less fans.
Halo 3 had the unprecedented hype following Halo 2 scoring fans from the then existing userbase.
But what had killzone 1 offered to bring on fans ?
Despite this KZ2 is scoring out there and has the potential though to gross big.

  • 0
aznable (on 03 March 2009)

@BTfeater55

if ms would take the exclusive for cod:mc 2 halo 3 sales could be beaten

  • 0
klarklar (on 03 March 2009)

Pretty good numbers for 2 days sales (at least majority of the world was 2 days), I wonder how much it will sell throughout the month

  • 0
chansaet (on 03 March 2009)

Thats pretty good. It deserves it too.

  • 0
BTFeather55 (on 03 March 2009)

Also, I predict that from this point until the end of this gen no new 360 exclusive fps will do as well in either sales or critical reception until the nextbox.

  • 0
BTFeather55 (on 03 March 2009)

I predict that ODST won't do as well both in review scores and units sold.

  • 0
aznable (on 03 March 2009)

@GameAnalyzer
900k the first week with 4m userbase is more than 20% of attach rate. with a similar percentage kz2 would sell over 2m copies in others only, but it will sell 400k

Check the chartz. U'll find out for urself..well if u didn't
I can direct u 2 links:
Pls click below following. Check the American Chartz and Others/EU chartz.
1.http://www.vgchartz.com/aweekly.php?date=39355&console=&maker=&boxartz=1

2.http://vgchartz.com/eweekly.php?date=39355&console=&maker=&boxartz=1

At Launch the game grossed 2.8mn ALONE in America(almost 75 percent out of WW) with a userbase of 11.25mn WW(7mn indeed in America itself). Now do u get what I tried to convince thru my previous comment?
If u analyse EU/others region sales..Halo's figures doesn't impress much.

  • 0
aznable (on 03 March 2009)

11.25m on 21th of sept 2007. halo 3 had an amazin attack rate of 25% more or less on launch

Killzone 2 is the third fastest selling ps3 game to date, and managed to top Call of Duty: World at War's first week sales. World at War, the sequel to the best selling Call of Duty 4, released in the middle of the holiday.

How is this considered bad by any means?

  • 0
TheTruthProphet (on 02 March 2009)

@GTAIV08 - if you don't think sony is in financial trouble YOU NEED TO do some research. The ps3 has cost sony all of the profits from the ps2 and more.

  • 0
aznable (on 02 March 2009)

are we talking about 750k+ WW sales in the first week?

put in perspective; with a user base of 5.3m Gears of war on 360 sold near 900k copies in the first week; KZ2 less with a user base bigger more than 3 times.

anyway comments about uk charts

Capcom’s ‘Street Fighter IV’ is knocked out after round 1, only lasting one week at the top of the All Formats Chart – this week’s brand new No1 is Sony’s ‘Killzone 2’ on PS3. ‘Killzone 2’ becomes the 4th fastest selling Sony published title ever in the UK (2nd fastest on PS3 behind ‘GT5 Prologue’).

KZ2 sold less than GT5 prologues on his first week that has been 2 days longer

  • 0
hatmoza 2.0 (on 02 March 2009)

i still stand by my 2 Million prediction !

  • 0
GameAnalyser (on 02 March 2009)

@frictionini
cool dood...u've observed it. LBP had made 336k in the first week and now its 2 million. The game has a potential to gross even more.

Now Take COD WAW..it made 735k in first week sales and now reached 2.8 mn and would approach 3mn in few weeks.

on topic now
[KZ2 has already made 750k in preliminary phase(exact figures not confirmed) and with the console price cut, Game's MP, future DLC and content for longevity..LifeTime G of 3.8 to 4.5 is most likely by including sales in Japan where release is delayed] .

Now to Refresh:
For those who feel lesser userbase fan is no excuse pls read below:

360's userbase outnumbers ps3's userbase for hardcore exclusivity by 2:1 which applies to America region eg: GOW2 preorder was 2.2 mn whereas 1st week sales in America saw 1.3mn

MGS 4 in America saw 665 k in first week which is half as that compared to GOW2 gross which proves that ps3 is struggling to showcase a masterpiece in same region with lesser userbase.

In a nutshell ps3 is just repeating the 2003's ps2 in all means but for slow start. Let come The PriceCut which would lure America region soon. 2009 is indeed the year to tie it up.

  • 0
raw153 (on 02 March 2009)

So is this worldwide or just one region? Because I expected more since in EU alone there were over 1 million pre-orders. Still great numbers though and PS3 games seem to sell well over a long period of time rather than all at once.

  • 0

  • 0

  • 0
magicaces (on 02 March 2009)

Good sales if these are correct and its only been a few days so will see next week. better than i expected though which was around 500k...still waiting for my copy to be delivered so demand must have been quite high as usually it comes next day...despatched today apparently.
Will wait and see for the goods, I'm hoping for a great game so shall see.
As for helping hardware sales, i don't think one game this far down the line would improve sales drastically, its not like gamers are already spoil for choice is it?! What with some great PC/360 shooters out on the market already but a general improvement of games on the PS3 will improve hardware sales over this year and the eventual price cut from Sony.
Yeah must be having a laugh the person who said sony will be bankrupt :-)

  • 0
joshin69 (on 02 March 2009)

OooHHHWEE
So you are saying KZ2 has sold badly, before any real numbers are out and then go on to compare with Halo, a proven unit shifter to prove the point. But what have you really proved?
I'm not going to answer that, i don't think i need to

  • 0
Jordahn (on 02 March 2009)

Good to know that Killzone 2 is doing well. It really is good to know that a hit or miss game (the first Killzone) can lead into a quality exclusive offering. Initial sales are great, and let's hope it continues to do well.

  • 0
Shin Megami (on 02 March 2009)

wow... uncharted did 2,6 million. brilliant.
yeah sony is on the verge of bankruptcy... they only sold 50 million psp, killzone2 only sold over 1 million in less than a week, and the ps2 is sadly still selling. omg,SONY IS TEH DOOMED! Its the end.

  • 0
fabkazuya (on 02 March 2009)

Uncharted drake, 134 000 first week....
Now 2.6 millions, so good numbers for killzone 2.
Even if the ps3 need a price cut...

  • 0
GameAnalyser (on 02 March 2009)

@aznable
There isn't any need to decide a product's failure if it fell a leg short of full commercialization. Perhaps we all know who was struggling to fix hardware issues costing over 1.1 billion and still persisting although they pretend to have found solution. And If u're ever trying to comment as a fanboy pls do one favour.. never compare HALO with this one..it that's the flagship title u intended!!

  • 0
aznable (on 02 March 2009)

yap just 3, and that's the reason because ps3 it's a commercial failure and sony is in the verge of bankroupt.

good performance for a title that's costed $60m+ and if thos figures are true is selling something like 1/5 of the competitor's flagship title despite the larger userbase

  • 0
Kantor (on 02 March 2009)

I would have to say that anybody expecting this to sell anywhere near Halo levels is extremely delusional...

IT'S NOT HALO! SERIOUSLY! How the hell is 750k in 2/3/4 days a flop? That's a two week million seller! How many of those has the PS3 had? Three?

You can't compare it to Halo because it has no brand name, and next to Microsoft's advertising of Halo, Sony's advertising of Killzone is crap.

So everybody, PLEASE stop the trolling...

And also, it didn't do 1.1 million first week in the EU. That was retailer pre-orders. That's shipped. Which is still pretty damned good.

  • 0
spynx (on 02 March 2009)

This is impressive.

M$ reports what they shipped to retailers which is different from consumers buying from retailers.

This is the sold figure for K2 perhaps in the US in less than a week. The ones shipped to retailers are more than this figure.

  • 0
Rath (on 02 March 2009)

First week is the first week in which sales are recorded, not the first seven days of sales of the game. Its just the way it is.

In any case I imagine that with a game like there will be a huge set frontloaded sales at the start (due to the demographic) followed by much lower but constant sales for a long time afterwards (largely due to the bundling).

Personally I am impressed by a 750k opening week, it surpassed my expectations I'll admit, both in quality and in sales.

  • 0
1337 Gamer (on 02 March 2009)

good job kz2 but i was expecting a higher number of copies sold considering this is probably the bigest shooter on the PS3 this geb

  • 0
Zomb1337 (on 02 March 2009)

2 1/2 days, and it sold 750,000! Not bad, but not what everyone was hyping it up to sell. Still, good game, nice sales numbers.

  • 0
TheTruthProphet (on 01 March 2009)

MAX KING WILD - ironic and hypocritical that YOU are calling people trolls

  • 0
Zedux (on 01 March 2009)

my question is simple! Can microsoft fight back? The problem is when Halo 3 came out every game out there used to get max 100/10/+A scores but now that's not the case! Take Gamespot as en example.... they gave GTA4 10 but gave Halo Wars 6.5 they realized that their score system was wrong as did most game reviewers K2 still manage to get 91 average score today which is very impressive. If microsoft can fight back they will undermine K2 but if they can't do that they are in trouble! I think now it's when the 360 will start to show its aging and limitations just check Race Pro for that released 2 years ago for the PC was a flop when it came out this month because of hardware limitations!!!

  • 0
Max King of the Wild (on 01 March 2009)

@BTFeather55... If MS got old xbox users to switch to the 360 to buy halo 3 then MS did a good job. Remember it is a gaming console good job MS.

Anyway, sales are about as expected. Personally I won't be buying the game, not really a fan (controls are ugh, I'll stick with CoD). I'd cap the games' sales around 3mil...

Interesting fact. This would mean that the first week sales for Killzone 2 worldwide would be higher than the lifetime sales for the first Killzone in America. Lifetime.

this is shocking...i expected 400k maximum

PS3 is not the console to push sales like this for a fps...the 360 and pc is
what makes it weird is that killzone 2 wasnt expected to get good reviews and sales due to killzone 1.
everyone thought it would be a disappointment like killzone 1

this is shocking once again....i will have to wait to see if the sales figure are correct because i find it hard to believe that this did better than resistance 2

@BTFeather55 - I was part of the other 10% that got it for Blue Dragon and Eternal Sonata at the time (Lost Odyssey is what I wanted the most which was coming in a few months). You are right. I knew tons of people who had a 360, but absolutely 0 of them besides myself got it for something other than Halo 3.

I will have to say, I enjoy Killzone 2 about 10 times more than Halo 3, and about twice as much as COD4. But that's just opinions.

I hope more people will buy the KZ2... take advantage of that, guys!

@BTFeather55

your notes no change the reality,.. the hype no is god way for any game sold more copies ,..

BTFeather55 (on 01 March 2009)

Two more notes. One person above mentions the fact that Halo 3 sold much better on the 360 when only 14 million 360's were on the market than KZ2 has with 20 million PS3's on the market. Well there is a reason for that 90% of those people that had a 360 prior to Halo 3's release bought a 360 because Halo 3 was going to be on there. While KZ2 is not the game that the majority of PS gamers have been looking forward to the most. The real test for KZ2 was whether it could finally be a shooter on PS3 that is as good or better than Halo or Gears on the PS3, and it has definitely shown that it is just as good and judging from the demo much better than Halo and Gears and any other game on 360. Point 2 I do think I have seen Killzone 2 ads during commercial breaks of Monday Night RAW the past several weeks, so ads for KZ2 are out there.

Stop making excuses about the ps3 small install base. When halo 3 came out it sold tons of games the first week. And the 360 had a small install base stop making excuses for K2 poor sales.

@Avarice28

That's simply not possible, there is no way there was 1.1 million consumer preorders for KZ2 in the UK, where the PS3 is at 2 million sold. I'm pretty sure these are preliminary week 1 numbers WW, and it's very, very good since the game was launched late into the week here in NA.

@JamesCizuz

No game has a full weeks sales included in their week 1 numbers. We have no way of measuring how much a game sold in the first 7 days unless we get numbers daily instead of weekly.

  • 0
Avarice28 (on 01 March 2009)

People, People the reason why 1.1 million was mentioned was because of pre-orders by customers from stores in the UK. This data that VG charts is showing you is from NORTH America and is only for one day. I think it is commendable that it was posted so early and is indicative of what the true first day sales will look like

snyperdud (on 01 March 2009)

The numbers arent bad.

Deserves more i think,A lot more.

  • 0
TheTruthProphet (on 01 March 2009)

Actually, kz2 is down to 91 on metacritic.
These are better sales than I expected.
Killzone 2 will NEVER be halo so stop with the comparrisons.
Halo is in a league of its own.
Why did sony hype the 1.1 million preorders as if they were actual sales??

  • 0
JPL78 (on 01 March 2009)

Well this just proves if you make up some fantastical CGI and call it game footage and then hype a game for 3 years it will sell pretty good. I'm just messing, good for Sony, good for Killzone. I understood the first one kind of sucked so I'm glad to see they have improved it. Still pretty crappy about the CGI so called "in game" footage though... led to a whole world of "xbox sucks" fanboy dredge. And as wonderful as it looks in the final product it does not meet what they did with those renders.

sebnod (on 01 March 2009)

first week halo 3: 2,8 M @ US and 900k others.

TKC-Muzzer (on 01 March 2009)

Please can all the 360 fanboys stop. Halo 3's sales were all on the back of the franchise and not how good the game was. It's like Star Wars, the newer films were crap but made millions because it had fans from the first three. Hence Halo 3 only sold so many because of its fan base. Figures can not be compared. I have both and i must report that only K2 deserves the next gen label, Halo 3 is above average at best.

JamesCizuz (on 01 March 2009)

Vgchartz numbers won't be "week 1" it'll be 1 day sales in America, and 3 day sales in europe.

  • 0
user_nat (on 01 March 2009)

Pretty good I guess, was probably expecting more seeing as I think CoD4 on the 360 sold more on less userbase.

  • 0
sebnod (on 01 March 2009)

Record numbers for one of the best 2009 game.

PS3 exclusive, of course ;)

Hopefully this game doesn't end up as severely undertracked as MGS4...

  • 0
higgybaby (on 01 March 2009)

In Europe pre-order over 1.1 million since 5 of february!

so I think that Worldwide in the first week KZ2 will sell maybe over 2 million copies!

ciao

These sales are pretty good, but when you compare it to the big shooters on the 360 there is no comparison...

I don't know if anybody here remarked this: KZ2 has been out since the 25th (Europe), Friday 27th (US)...that doesn't make it "1 week old" really...

  • 0
Maynard_Tool (on 01 March 2009)

WW????

Well, it looks like is really good, especially b/c the first game wasn't that good. It seems that all the promotion and advertisement worked. Good for sony. Now let's see how the ps3 is gonna do, and how the game is gonna perform with time

  • 0
Nordman (on 01 March 2009)

Guys I hope you do not believe that these numbers are real. Its just a guess, the official numbers arent even out so how could they know? It could be 500 k or even 1.5 mil for the first week.
