More Than 1 Million People Have Played Sea of Thieves Since Launch - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 21 March 2018 / 3,300 Views

More than one million unique players set sail in Sea of Thieves since it released yesterday, March 20, announced executive producer Joe 'Three Sheets' Neate.

There have been three to four times the concurrent players than were seen during the Scale Test and Betas. This has led to some issues that developer Rare is currently working on.

Here is the list of issues and the current status on them as of 3pm GMT on March 21:

1.    Players having difficulty getting into the game at peak times

During peak times (9am–2pm GMT/5pm–10pm EDT/2pm–7pm PDT) we are seeing a very high volume of players, which is leading to strain on our server matchmaking services.

Status: Ongoing work to improve. We plan to have some improvements in place for peak time tonight, but still expect some issues here.

Advice: Try matchmaking into a crew that is already out on an adventure, as you will join an in-progress session rather than going through the server matchmaking flow.

2.    Player rewards being delayed

Due to the volume of players, our services that award players gold and reputation when cashing in rewards can be delayed. Players should expect to see these rewards eventually come through, as they are queued up in our message service.

Status: Ongoing work to improve. We plan to have some improvements in place for peak time tonight, but are investigating whether this needs a patch to the main game client or can all be handled within our services.

Advice: Don't quit and restart to try to resolve the issue during peak times. If you continue playing, rewards should flow through eventually.

3.    Achievements being delayed

Some of our players, especially during peak time, could see a delay in achievements being awarded.

Status: Believed fixed for next game patch (ETA: early next week).

4.    Temporarily missing items

We have seen reports of players loading into the game and not having items/weapons.

Status: Believed fixed for next game patch (ETA: early next week).

5.    Reported performance issues on Xbox One X

We have seen some performance issues reported when playing Sea of Thieves on Xbox One X.

Status: Believed fixed for next game patch (ETA: early next week).

Sea of Thieves is out now for the Xbox One and Windows PC.

How much revenue are the specific developers making when probably close to half of their players are from Game Pass?

Considering that this is a first party game I'd say none.

Well game pass may have saved this game

Interesting. That number sounds a bit low for the amount of hype the game has received, but it sounds like it still managed to exceed their expectations. Of course success is good, though.

Maybe I just wasn't that invested in the hype-trains but I saw just as much criticism/skepticism as hype for this game, if not more. I'm actually surprised that it garnered 1 million players at launch but yeah, success is success I guess

Now the game just needs to grow. More content as they plan through out the year. Foundation is set.

I've spent several hours in the game and I enjoy the heck out of it. I can see why anyone would probably be disappointed with the game though. All these issues, being a "walking simulator"-esqe game, empty islands, repetitive quests and I can acknowledge that these are problems that should be fixed but I've enjoyed every session I've had so far in the game, from early alpha to now so I never hesitated to throw 60$ at this.

I would not necessarily call this a game for everyone though even if it might've been marketed as such so among all those million players there's bound to be pissed off customers, it's too bad.

Take this as a learning opportunity so games like State of Decay, Forza Horizon 4, and Crackdown 3 won't have issues like this at launch, but they should have expected this based on how many people subscribed to gamepass.

Is it fair to mention that Halo Master Chief collection should have reminded them?

Halo Master Chief collection was just an embarrasment, like it is Halo, it should have been ready months before launch. Sea of Thieves isn't Halo as we can all tell, so makes sense as to why Rare didn't expect such massive numbers in one day, since it is a new IP, and it's no COD, Halo, or Battlefield.

I haven't experienced any major issues. There's been a few audio clips from teammates and the odd moving hiccups, but nothing out of the ordinary from any other mmo or online game I've ever played. Although I waited a day before logging on so maybe things were fixed before I got there?

Embarrassing. As if a large volume of players was unexpected.

Is this any different from every single beta?
