Axiom Verge Launch Sales on the Switch 'Likely' Surpass PS4 - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 04 February 2018 / 2,277 Views

January was the biggest month for Axiom Verge since the game launched in 2015, according to the creator of the game Tom Happ. This was mainly due to the delayed payments for shipments sold on the Nintendo Switch version in holiday 2017.

The digital launch sales of the Nintendo version are near what the the PlayStation 4 launch sales were and when you add in the physical release sales are "likely" higher.

Axiom Verge is currently available for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Wii U, PlayStation Vita, and Windows PC.

It's a good game. Finished it on my WiiU but double dipped for the physical release on Switch. Totally worth it cause it's also a sort of donation to Tom and his situation.

Very good Metroid type game.

What an amazing game. Played it on my Vita. Hope to see a sequel in the near future.

Hapy that the game is a success for him. I just got my copy yesterday! :)

Good to see MonoGame built games, like Axiom, Celeste and Stardew Valley, gaining a new life on the Switch. I hope other indie game devs start thinking about MonoGame for their future 2D and 3D games.

Proof that Nintendo could make a Super Metroid 2 and it would be accepted with open arms.

A great game that's sure to resonate with Metroid fans, though I can't help but wonder if the sales are due to quality or the Switch just being thirsty for a good game (haven't had anything worth a look since Odyssey).

When we have dozens of 3rd party devs/publishers talking about their games being successful on Switch and many times being the best selling version on top of 1st party software doing amazing than we have to assume its simply because Switch is a platform with a thriving software ecosystem.

Switch already has about 400 games in less than a year, the Switch owners being thirsty for software discussion should have ended by now.

No reason to exaggerate. Its funny that you bring up the number of games on shelves because yesterday I actually counted the number of Switch games at my local Walmart, it was around 40.

Mario Odyssey, Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2, ARMS, Mario+Rabbids, Sonic Forces, Skyrim, DOOM, Mario Kart Deluxe, LA Noire, Minecraft Story Mode, Lego City, 1 2 Switch, Just Dance 2018, Pokken Tournament, Xenoblade 2, Rocket League, Resident Evil Revelations Collection, FIFA 18, NBA 2K18, WWE 2K18, Fire Emblem Warriors, Ultra Street Fighter 2, Super Bomberman, Dragon Ball Xenoverse, Rayman Legends, Lego Marvel Superheroes

Those are just the ones i can remember off the top of my head. The majority of them belong to popular or long running franchises.

Now lets talk about the eShop. Sure it has a bunch of junk but it also has a plethora of quality titles.

Sonic Mania, Overcooked, Stardew Valley, NBA Playgrounds, Axiom Verge, Golf Story, Snipperclips, Shovel Knight, RIME, Fast RMX, Brawlout, SteamWorld Dig 2, Celeste, Super Meat Boy, Thumper, Blaster Master Zero, Enter the Gungeon, Wonder Boy, Binding of Isaac, Jackbox Party Pack, Kamiko, Tumbleseed, Oceanhorn, etc.

Stop exaggerating, its just making you look ingorant.

"Off the top of my head" he says as he references his library.

It's nice that you can list those. The average Joe can probably name four or five third party titles, and most of the first party. Our ability to list games, by virtue of being in the know enough to even argue these kinds of things, hardly represents the masses.

Reference my library? I dont own 1/4 of those games, that doesnt change the fact that most of those retail games belong to extremely popular or long runnig franchises that are well known.

Is this really a discussion that someone who doesn't know anything about games might think there are 4 games on the Switch? Really?

Hey guys, people who don't know anything about cars thinks that there are 2 types of car in the whole world. Discuss.

@zorg1000: Oh no, the joke at the beginning of the last post was misconstrued as legitimate. I guess I'll have to tone down the humor since not everyone gets it. Being part of a popular franchise doesn't entitle you to popularity. And on top of that, I wouldn't consider Just Dance or 1 2 Switch popular in the slightest. The fact that you included those alongside a veritable train wreck like Sonic Forces shows that you're digging deep into a pre-written list. Do me a favor: go to a place that sells games and take a picture of the 400 different games. Then I'll concede.

@Ganoncrotch: Not a very apt comparison, since someone who doesn't know anything about cars is still likely on the road much of the time seeing different cars everywhere. In addition to that, it's still be inapt due to the fact that even if you saw a bunch of people playing Switches in one area, you wouldn't know what they're playing by just looking at them.

How bad is ypur reading comprehension?

I didnt say Switxh had 400 games at retail, i said it has 400 games on the eShop and stores in my area carry about 40 different retail games.

Also i didnt say all of those games are popular franchises, i said MOST are either popular or belong to a long running franchise.

Also, you are changing goalposts, we are talking about games being recognizable. Just Dance & Sonic are extremely recognizable regardless of how well they sell currently.

You have proven to not havie a clue what you are talking about.
1. Switch has dozens of successful games
2. Switch has a bunch of games from recognizable franchises.

These are facts.

Not so bad that I needed you to double post it, I can tell you that much. And how bad is yours, for that matter? I've already down knowledge that most of that 400 is digital indies, and now you're taking my hyperbole at face value? Tsk tsk.

And now you're arguing that most are from popular franchises? Most of what? The 400 digital, or the 20 retail?

I'm not changing goal posts, I'm just pointing out how very near the bottom of the barrel you had to dig to fluff up your list.

1. Switch has seven titles that have gotten 1m+ sales, and ten with over 500k. Not "dozens".
2. The entire "recognizable" argument wasn't even my original argument. It was part of a hyperbolic retort that you took at face value.

  • -3
zorg1000 (on 05 February 2018)

Maybe if you want people to understand what you are saying than stop making smart ass comments that have nothing to do with what we are talking about.

Im clearly talking about the retail titles here and no im not going to the bottom of the barrel.

Again, try to follow along, you said only 4 games were recognizable. I made a list of 20+ games that either sold well or are from long running franchises.

It doesnt matter that Sonic Forces was garbage or Just Dance isnt very popular anymore, they are both recognizable which was my point.

1. Yes, dozens. You cant just make up your definition of success with arbitray numbers. If a dev/pub says they are happy with a games sales than it is a success. Switch has dozens of successful games.

2. Again, if you want people to understand you, dont be a smart ass and actually give serious responses.

Gonna be honest, I stopped reading when you said you weren't scraping the bottom of the barrel despite citing Sonic and Just Dance. If you're going to be outright dishonest, I'm not going to continue. Later.

zorg1000 (on 05 February 2018)

Are you mentally challenged? We are talking about whether or not they are recognizable, which has nothing to do with quality.

Are you trying to say Sonic & Just Dance are not recognizable franchises?

"thirsty for a good game"

"The entire "recognizable" argument wasn't even my original argument. It was part of a hyperbolic retort that you took at face value"

If you're going to be belligerent and rude, you can at least read thoroughly.

Azuren (on 05 February 2018)

Yeah okay. I mean, that seems more like you're intentionally looking for moderations, but it's your account. Like I said, though, this conversation has run its course if you're going to insist Sonic Forces is good.

zorg1000 (on 05 February 2018)

Your lack of reading comprehension is shining through again. I never once said Sonic Forces was good, i never even played it, i said Sonic is a recognizable franchise.

It makes sense, looking at the gameplay... I certainly want a lot, a lot more from my PS4 than Axiom Verge.

Ganoncrotch (on 05 February 2018)

with an 84% Metacritic the PS4 has 107 games on the platform rated higher than this, and christ only knows how many below it. The game is great, people just seem to pick up their yearly cod and sports games over great games on the system.
