The Duke Original Xbox Controller Returns in March - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 14 January 2018 / 3,636 Views

The original Xbox controller, nicknamed The Duke, is returning to the Xbox One at the end of the March for $69.99.

The original creator of the controller Seamus Blackley and accessory creator Hyperkin with support from the head of Xbox Phil Spencer are bringing the controller back with some updates.

"Thank you for being such a force behind making this happen.  Cool to see this coming out," said Spencer.

The controller now features two bumper buttons and a USB port that is combatible with the Xbox One and Windows PC. It also features an OLED screen in the middle of the controller that plays the original Xbox's bootup sequence.

Nah, that's the Controller S. Lets make the Controller and move the white and back buttons to an odd position for LULs. The Controller S is the only bad controller MS has made.

That is sick! Will definitely pick one of these up.

That controller was just fine back in the days. Never had an S controller and honestly never needed one. Still, I don't see a lot of reasons to get one for the X1. Except of course if you play original Xbox games on it.

it's actually a pretty comfortable controller, having played with the OG Xbox recently. Maybe it's more comfortable for people with bigger hands or something? I don't know... I like it

It's one of my all-time favorite controllers. I wonder if there's a way to get it running on my PS4...

Nostalgia is a powerful drug.

it's really actually a comfortable controller. And while visually the button layout looks awkward, in hands the controller is just not that big and all buttons quite reachable imo

There was a reason why it was quickly discontinued and replaced by the S controller.

I'll buy it as a weapon.

That makes my hands cringe just looking at it. Why are the buttons like that!?

I bet there's a lot of happy NBA players... I've seen them hold conventionally sized controllers, and lord do I feel for them lol

I remember liking the controller myself as a kid more than the PSDS counterpart, but really until the PS4 I just always disliked those dualoshocks. The Xbox360's controller was definitely an improvement though, but this one really came close to providing the optimal shape were it not for being so dang fat lol

Why...?

I still can’t believe this exist. This controller was so bad they had to replace it with a revised version designed for Japan, like, a year after the console was released.

The Xbox controller S...now THAT was a good controller.

I remember playing with it... thumb on my right hand started to hurt after a while because of the shape and rock hard material the buttons were made off. Never experienced that with other controllers. Even worse than the DC and N64 pads.

If you press x x x, y y y, you'll be sucked

What is this a celebration for? That controller sucked. In fact, it sucked so badly that in less than 2 years, it was replaced by the smaller Japanese controller.

Why? Horrible controller.. maybe its Classic controller idea for original Xbox games.

Terrible controller and omg wtf selling it for $70 when it's bloody wired!!

  • -2
jamesmarkus87 (on 14 January 2018)

This controller sucked, and it's definitely not worth $69.99. And while I did like the Controller S, it feels very awkward to me when compared to the excellent Xbox 360 and Xbone controllers.

First off - who asked for this?
Secondly - Why is it wired?
Thirdly - 69.99???!!!
What a waste

He must’ve taken there joke seriously and if they were serious about getting one, why is it more expensive than the normal xone controller? Its not even wireless and it doesn’t any extra feature. On top of all that, its awkward to hold in your hands

They said it has a new lcd screen in the middle where the Xbox logo is. The original didn’t.

Alright can you use that “lcd screen” in games?Does it add anything besides aesthetics? If so then It might be worth the purchase, i can look past That it’s bulky and its wired only if that screen has benefits in your game.

But why? It was a horrible controller and I think maybe 3 people actually liked it...

Zkuq hunter_alien (on 14 January 2018)

Well, this is pretty cool even if the controller wasn't very much liked. It can be pretty nostalgic for some people.

I'm one of the 3 I guess. I really liked both the Duke and Gamecube controller at the time. Dualshock was always too small for me until the more recent DS4. I have no idea how really young kids or people with small hands in general could deal with the size of the Duke. 360 was a much better compromise for everyone overall.

Darc Requiem hunter_alien (on 14 January 2018)

If you have big hands the Duke was fine. The Controller S is the one the sucked. It was small and terrible button placement.

The original PS1 looked like trash in grey. Yet, people were so excited about the PS4 edition that looked just like it.

And... I can see why for both cases.
