PSVR Sold 500,000 Units in 3 Month Period Through June - News
by William D'Angelo , posted on 23 September 2017 / 5,255 ViewsSony's PlayStation VR sold 500,000 units in a three month period through June 2017, according to data from IDC. That gives it an "unmatched" lead in the virtual reality market over the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.
In order to play the PlayStation VR it needs to be plugged into the PlayStation 4. The console itself has sold 62.19 million units as of July 29, according to VGChartz estimates.
"I‘m not entirely comfortable being the market leader in VR by such a margin that seems to be happening right now," Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Andrew House told Reuters in an interview.
"With such a brand new category you want a variety of platforms all doing well to create that rising tide and create the audience."
House added that Sony isn't seeing an impact on PlayStation sales since the release of the Nintendo Switch in March.

And people are still calling this device a flop because...? Averaging around 170K per month for a $400 peripheral is not too shabby.
Because "not too shabby" is not synonymous with "great"?
Context. Of course I'm not saying it's great, but it's still brand new technology that has a higher retail price than the console that it's designed to play games on. 2 million units in less than a year for something like that is still pretty good.
You basically just described the Sega CD. Brand new tech (for home consoles), more pricey than the hardware it was designed for (Genesis)... 2.5 million in sales etc.
I think PSVR is awesome but much like Sega CD, it's an attachment that's overpriced and too early to the market. VR isn't where it needs to be in order to take over the industry. I think we'll see it get there in the next 10 years but right now? It's just not ready.
Sega CD also launched with a whole plethora of issues that ruined its chances at going any further. Plus, if I'm not mistaken, Seaga launched the Saturn shortly after, killing any more potential for growth. VR has to start somewhere. People were saying "wait another 10 years for good VR" back in the days of the virtual boy. It's about time companies started taking risks on the tech so that it can finally reach the masses and have a chance to grow. PSVR is a good start.
For mass consumer this is definitely most affordable choice. Not as good as oculus and vive but good enough for most average user.
Great news. Going to do much more with the recent price drops. Would love to have one but need a Pro first.
I really want a ps vr but its too damm expensive here

Well, we know 915K as of the end is f February. If we assume it sold 500K+ between February and June, we're probably looking at close to 2 million sold total.
ok wires we get wires ok
Pretty much what Dialga said. Comfortably at 2 million units, which is not bad for a VR headset that requires another system to function.
There now needs to be a big influx of games for the system if they want to see that number grow. RE7 did a lot for it during that time, but that momentum has ended.
@Tridrakious There's definitely some pretty strong software in the pipeline for it: DOOM VFR, Skyrim VR, GTS, Ace Combat 7, and Fallout VR is a safe assumption as well.
