Ataribox Can Play Current and Classic Games, Will Contain 'Modern Internal Specs' - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 17 July 2017 / 7,144 Views

New information on the Ataribox has been revealed in a newsletter. There were no specs revealed, however, the company said it wants to bring current and classic gaming content to the device. The console will contain "modern internal specs."

The console will cone in two editions, a wood version and a black/red version. It will have an SD card slot, HDMI output and four USB ports.

Here is the complete newsletter:

Our objective is to create a new product that stays true to our heritage while appealing to both old and new fans of Atari.

Inspired by classic Atari design elements (such as the iconic use of wood, ribbed lines, and raised back); we are creating a smooth design, with ribs that flow seamlessly all around the body of the product, a front panel that can be either wood or glass, a front facing logo, indicator lights that glow through the material, and an array of new ports (HDMI, 4xUSB, SD). We intend to release two editions: a wood edition, and a black/red edition.

As you can guess, those ports suggest modern internal specs. It also means that while we will be delivering classic gaming content, we will also be delivering current gaming content.

We know you are hungry for more details; on specs, games, features, pricing, timing etc. We’re not teasing you intentionally; we want to get this right, so we’ve opted to share things step by step as we bring Ataribox to life, and to listen closely to Atari community feedback as we do so. There are a lot of milestones, challenges and decision points in front of us in the months ahead. We’ll be giving you lots more information and status updates as we progress, and we are thrilled to have you along for the ride!

Hope you like where we are taking this, we’ll be in touch soon.

The Ataribox Project team.

Thanks Kotaku.

This is just so weird. I mean, who actually are these guys? Atari has been nothing more than less than ten employees who simply license the name or publish games under the name for years, they certainly couldn't make a legitimate attempt at producing a modern console. Also, this thing just seems so unneeded... I can't see it working.

Even if it had twice the specs of the PS4Pro or the XBox One X, why would people buy it? The company has been practically irrelevant since the Jaguar days (some might argue even before them), who would want to spend 400-500€ on a console like this? At least the OUYA was 99€.

Might be my backup console beside my Xbox One X! I'm torn between the two styles though. The black one matches my entertainment centre but I like the retro wood grain look.

First it's Atari, whos next Sega, NeoGeo, just think Sega could have a killer app if they came back to making hardware if they decided to finally make Shenmue 3 as an exclusive (chance of seeing Shenmue 3 are extremely slim but we can dream cant we), or NeoGeo with an entire back catalog of all their arcade games like Metal Slug.

The console comes in either plastic or Wood.... this isn't going to be designed to get every GFLOP out of the chip inside, it's going to be a bare minimum system needed to run very basic indie games I would wager, absolutely no where near current gen systems.

From the picture showing a USB port which is 1.5cm across, the front of the unit is around 19x that size making it 28.5CM across and given that it's a 2x1 ratio device means that it is around 14CM deep and about 4CM at it's tallest part. I mean it's almost the same width as the PS4 but no where near as far back or high as the console, grid along the top looks to be indented almost by .5CM which is purely just for looks so like I said I would wager this to be a very underpowered machine with the shape more being for nostalgia design rather than functionality.

Do also consider that you are talking about the storage being just a Micro SD card, not really going to be fitting the PC port of Doom on that in terms of modern games are ya?
