Microsoft CEO: Xbox Live Is the Biggest Gaming Social Network

Microsoft CEO: Xbox Live Is the Biggest Gaming Social Network - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 11 May 2017 / 8,664 Views

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella during the  Financial Analyst Briefing 2017 talked about the gaming business.

Nadella stated that gaming was one of the first places that Microsoft brought all of its assets together and that gaming is much broader than just the Xbox.

The CEO added that Xbox Live is the biggest gaming social network and earns more money than any other gaming social networks.

Xbox Live is now available on the Xbox One and PC, which links users on both platforms together. There are new business models, including acquiring Beam streaming service and Xbox Game Pass.

Streaming is expanding beyond gaming now and it is "connecting the dots around gaming" and "stretching it to these new forms of expression," according to Nadella.

Thanks DualShockers.

*includes every user on Windows 10/mobile which has xbl pre installed and can't be deleted

Its free on PC. So if there making profit off there network than those free users are spending money on it.

Isn't Xbox Live free on PC? Besides I highly doubt it's bigger than Steam or Twitch lol

Going by that diagram, I think he's on about the networks put together, rather than the size of a single network on it's own. Steam doesn't have multiple networks that MS has been setting up. Twitch is also a singular network.

So he's including every single service that Microsoft offers as part of the Xbox Live network? Cause most Skype users are also clearly gamers LOL

Chazore SuperNintend0rk (on 11 May 2017)

Yeah, but under MS it becomes multiple networks under one company.

Last I checked we don't have Steam chat, Steam console, Steam live service, a steam game that is actively supported across all the platforms out there etc, you get what I mean.

  • -1

True but once again Microsoft are releasing pointless numbers that no one cares about instead of sales figures for a console that's doing quite well.

Chazore SuperNintend0rk (on 11 May 2017)

Yes but I don't think it's fair to ignore the fact that they have created multiple networks than anyone else has bothered to create. One day when it shows signs of growing in number, it will stand out against a singular network.

  • -2

Sure... if you consider forcing people to upgrade to Windows 10 with Xbox Live preinstalled as creating a network LMAO

  • +1
Chazore SuperNintend0rk (on 11 May 2017)

Except the forcing part is over and done with. it's now just Win 10 being sold on the market. You think it' makes sense for them to sell more Win 7-8 keys when your new OS is out?, that sounds just a bit silly business wise.

Also XBL already exists as a network of it's own. Win 10 becomes another, as does Skype.

According to that logic, whenever anyone buys a new PC they're adding to Microsoft's "gaming social network". Anyone with a brain can see through this crap and the fact that they're bragging about it is just embarassing!

  • +1
Chazore SuperNintend0rk (on 11 May 2017)

They are adding to the "Windows 10" network when they buy a PC. Buy a surface tablet?, you're a part of that network, buy a console of theirs, yup their XBL and Xbox network.

I can see them bragging about their networks, the size they are absolutely wrong on, but the multiple networks they have which Steam factually doesn't, they can have. Call me when Steam finally gets around to having that many networks, on different devices, all of which they built or bought to create said multiple networks under their brand, because as far as things go they just have the client and an app on a phone (which still is the Steam client, not integrated into a Valve owned phone either).

  • +1

Go ahead and brag about your massive "network" Microsoft! Pretty soon we're gonna be seeing Windows 10 pre-installed in microwaves and toilets so they can brag about having the biggest network in human history haha

  • +1
Chazore SuperNintend0rk (on 11 May 2017)

Lmfao, I'm not even bragging about their network, I don't even like MS, but I cannot just ignore the fact that they own and operate multiple networks under their brand, while the likes of Steam and some others out there not having the same.

Apparently you ened to go well out of your way to downvote me in spite of what I've been telling you, that is speaking volumes to me,e specially when you go back to making sure they are downvoted.

Technically XBL is free everywhere, it just has a paid edition too. But you can access a lot of stuff even for free. But yeah, I don't think online multiplayer using XBL costs anything on PC. Still, Microsoft is probably including even free users in their statement, so whatever's behind the paywall isn't very relevant, I think.

Chazore SuperNintend0rk (on 11 May 2017)

I'm not even paying any attention to their talk of how many ppl they have, it's more of a focus on their networks which I'm looking at. People are quick to shove steam (bit odd to boast about Steam from users on here who care less for PC gaming, only now using Steam lol) in the debate, but fail to notice that Steam currently has nowhere near the number of Networks MS has, which in the future are very likely to grow, which gives MS multiple numbers to toss up and combine.

@Chazore I never said you were bragging about it, I said Microsoft was. It makes me wonder if Trump's got any involvement in their company, cause all the crap being spouted by their PR team reeks of "alternative facts" lol

To include the income from Minecraft is one thing since obviously millions of copies of that are sold for use on PSN and Nintendo consoles now, but the fact that skype incoming is required to make this statement true is just awful. Would be better to leave it off or we'll see a diagram like this from Sony which includes all psn and playstations sales.... and adds in the sale of Sony TVs as they are used for gaming to make the "social media network" income be more.

Are you guys aware Beam alone might make this statement make sense? XBL alone has 55+ users. It isn't as far fetched as it sounds...

"Xbox Live has 55 million users"

https://www.geekwire.com/2017/xbox-live-monthly-active-user-count-reaches-record-55m-15-last-year/

And this is Xbox Live alone. Add in the Windows Store games and it rises further, it might as well be high enough to be the largest not owned by Valve...

I've been with XBL for over 13 years. I haven't regretted my time with it. It's a great service and I've met some great people.

Keep up the amazing work!

Uh, I'm not upset or jealous. I'm not sure how you could possibly arrive at that conclusion from my comments... It couldn't be much more clear MS is spinning the truth pretty hard here. I'm sure MS is doing very well but this comment clearly isn't true.
