Reggie: 3DS has a Long Life in Front of It, 3DS and Switch to Live Side-by-Side - News

Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime speaking with Wired said that Nintendo 3DS has a long life left and that it will live alongside the Nintendo Switch.

"3DS has a long life in front of it," said Fils-Aime. "We’ve already announced games that will be launching in the first couple quarters of this year. There are a number of big games coming. And in our view, the Nintendo 3DS and the Nintendo Switch are going to live side-by-side.

"You’re going to be meeting different price points, you’re going to be meeting different types of consumers, you’re going to have the newest, freshest content available on Nintendo Switch, you’ve got a thousand-game library available on Nintendo 3DS, plus some key new ones coming. They’re going to coexist just fine. We’ve done this before, managing two different systems.

"I think there’s a sense that Nintendo Switch is a portable device. It is portable. But at its heart, it’s a home console that you can take with you on the go."

The Nintendo Switch launches worldwide on March 3.

This better be salesman talk, Reggie. Nintendo needs to focus on the Switch once it lands.

I agree but also would like a real 3ds replacement next year

In that case, it should be a handheld-only Switch.

That would be good. I am probably going to just use it for hand held only at the start.

There isn't gonna be a 3DS replacement... the Switch is it.

Frankly, that's ideal. Who wants to buy another Nintendo handheld and home console? Getting it all in one device is great.

Yeah, let's come back in one year, see how accurate this claim is then.

He did say, "We've done this before."

Let's hope not or otherwise we might never see a HD pokemon RPG. Besides the 3DS didn't sell that great in 2016 except for Japan and during the pokemon hype.

Exactly. Why keep supporting and quite old, under powered handheld when the Switch is coming and is way more powerful? The original 3ds is almost 6 years old now (2011). 7 years after the ds (2004) launched was when the 3ds came out. So unless they plan on releasing a new handheld next year, they probably will give up on the 3ds.

Why? Look at pokemon sun/moon sales numbers.

lukeperryglover Qwark (on 19 January 2017)

Yeah, but that was also partially due to the hype of pokemon go earlier in the year, and despite the insane #'s of pokemon sun/moon sales the 3DS still isn't selling too well (except for like 2-3 weeks of the year).

You said that with the Wii U.........

Nintendo has proven impressively that it isn't capable of supporting two consoles at the same time with the WiiU. It better fully get behind the switch. That full force of nintendo developement power is what excites me most about the switch. If anything there should be enhanced switchports and crossbuy for 3DS games from here on out.

What about Wii U, Reggie? ahahaha

If the Switch fails, then sure.

Don't expect much 1st party support for 3DS. But 3rd parties will support its 60 million+ userbase for a few years, mostly in Japan.

Well the 3DS still has like 5-6 million units ahead of it, maybe a bit more, but I am not seeing it doing any serious dent outside Japan this year. Even that MHXX looks to be the last truly AAA seller there.

If this happens, Switch is dead. It's only hope is if it gets Nintendo's undivided support.

Just like the Gameboy.

Bull, just bull. The Switch is supposed to be a hybrid and with that usb type-c port you can charge it on the go and it's way more powerful than the 3ds. So I call bull crap on this comment. It's like Nintendo saying multiple times last year that the switch would not replace the Wii U even though they stopped manufacturing the Wii U and it hasnt had a dashboard update in a year. They did recently, finally stop saying it won't replace the Wii U. lol
