Nintendo Switch Quick Preview - ARMS - News

ARMS is a ring fighting game with an injection of Nintendo-esque clichés and a dash of Star Gladiator. It has all of the stand-out features you've come to expect from Nintendo, including outlandish but familiar character designs and a beautiful, vibrant colour palette.

There were a few characters to try out at the preview event, some big and slow, others small and fast. Each character has extendo arms and comes with his or her own unique abilities and different gloves/weapons that are equipped on each hand. One, for example, is able to spam rockets towards enemies and back them into a corner, while another is able to dash and dart all over the place, dodging incoming attacks.

In typical Nintendo fashion, on the surface ARMS is easy to understand, fun to play, and attractive to look at, but there’s a hidden depth of tactics that began to emerge as you play.

One immediate issue with ARMS however is its over reliance on the motion sensor - you push the Joy-Cons forward to move forward, back to go back, and can throw in hooks and straight punches - and this has the potential to limit ARMS' tactical depth. I wasn’t able to try it out with a Pro Controller, though I was told that you can and I suspect this will be the optimal way to play ARMS when it launches later this year.
